A project that due to the pandemic saw the lead shifting from Claire Foy to Sarah Paulson, production on Karrie Crouse and Will Joines‘ Dust would take place around August of last year in New Mexico with Annaleigh Ashford, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Bill Heck and Amiah Miller among the cast. Dust is scheduled to be released by Searchlight Pictures with plans to launch the film via Hulu but we sense that this psychological horror thriller is of interest because it was workshopped at the Sundance Institute Writer’s Lab — dating all the back to 2014. Prior to this feature debut, the tandem worked in the short film form.…...

Exclusive: Elle Fanning (The Great) and Sarah Paulson (Ratched) are attached to star in I Am Sybil, a new film co-written and directed by Mirrah Foulkes (Judy & Punch) that explores the gripping true story behind the best-selling book and cultural-sensation case of Sybil, one of the first mainstream cases of dissociative identity disorder, which spurred questions in the public consciousness around identity and mental health.
Sybil was a pseudonym given to Shirley Mason in a 1973 work of nonfiction by Flora Rheta Schreiber, which examined the young woman’s treatment for Mpd by psychologist Connie Wilbur. Disney’s Searchlight arm has bought rights to Claire Foy’s horror-thriller “Dust,” four months after the project was unveiled at the Cannes Virtual Market.
Foy will portray a woman who becomes increasingly traumatized in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms and convinces herself that a mysterious presence is threatening her family. She then takes extraordinary measures to protect them.
Variety reported at the Cannes market in June that the film would be set around a remote farmhouse and would be fairly self-contained, with just a small number of starring roles and a minimalist aesthetic.
Will Joines and Karrie Crouse are set to direct from a script that Crouse wrote. The screenplay was developed at the Sundance Writer’s Lab.
“Winter’s Bone” producer Alix Madigan and her Mad Dog Films are producing with Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are co-representing North American rights.

British actor Claire Foy is set to front psychological horror “Dust” — a hot project being launched at this week’s virtual Cannes market.
Foy, whose turn as Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s “The Crown” earned her a Golden Globe and Emmy Award, will play a young mother in 1930s Oklahoma. Trapped by increasingly stifling dust storms, she takes extreme measures to protect her family while haunted by her past.
Variety understands the film, which is set around a remote farmhouse, is fairly self-contained, with just a small number of starring roles and a minimalist aesthetic. It’s the kind of project that could bode particularly well for this market, where players across the industry are hyper-aware of the limits of production going forward.

It’s the kind of project that could bode particularly well for this market, where players across the industry are hyper-aware of the limits of production going forward.
Will Joines and Karrie Crouse, who collaborated on the short film “Propagation,” are to direct from a script from Crouse, whose writing credits include HBO’s “Westworld.

Chicago – The pure, character-driven film is as rare as a comic book movie with a bad opening weekend. “Land Ho!” is one of those celluloid treats, the simple story of “Odd Couple” senior citizens – portrayed unforgettably by Earl Lynn Wilson and Paul Eenhoorn – who take a trip to the country of Iceland, and learn how to, and how not to, get along.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The Foghorn Leghorn machinations of Earl Lynn Wilson blend and clash purposely with the lower keyed Eenhoorn. They both tolerate and love one another, which is the best way to generate drama or comedy, even in the midst of such a simple story. Wilson is a hoot, it’s impossible to make up such a character, and indeed the surgeon-turned-actor will inevitably exclaim, “That’s me, baby!” The veteran actor Eenhoorn clings more to character, but even he gets sucked into the Earl Lynn vortex, and the...

Chicago – There might not be a more unusual movie this year than “Land Ho!” The film follows two “golden boys,” sixtysomethings Mitch (Earl Lynn Nelson) and Colin (Paul Eenhoorn), as they take an Odd Couple-type trip to Iceland. Writer/director Aaron Katz (“Dance Party, USA”) breaks that ice between the two men.
Katz had both a co-director and co-writer on the film, Martha Stephens, and the one-of-a-kind line readings from lead actor Earl Lynn Nelson (“That’s me, baby!”). Nelson is a retired surgeon, as he is in the film, and he steals the show as a profane, pot-smoking senior who is looking for adventure, and takes Paul Eenhoorn’s Colin along for the ride. What is unique about this situation, beyond Nelson, is the vast and awe-inducing setting of Iceland, and the very human story of two disparate gentleman trying to figure out one of the more confusing times of life.

Delivering career bests with the unlikeliest of gems with a septuagenarian, buddy dramedy that utilizes portions of the road-trip template, wunderkinds Martha Stephens (Pilgrim Song fame) and Aaron Katz (Cold Weather fame) Land Ho! is perhaps the best title to set sail with our top 200 list. Swooning auds at the world premiere screening at the Library theatre in Park City, ostensibly this works from a matter-of-factly devised idea but firmly validated a pair of points: singular voices can creatively offer strong samples when paired and, U.S indie spirit works comfortably outside the U.S. borders.

Many critically acclaimed films and surprise hits over the years have received their start at the Sundance Film Festival, elevating the prominence of the 10-day event. This has led to the acquisition of films at the festival a prestige on its own, as many studios and filmmakers use the positive word of mouth garnered to get the films to distributors and in theatres. Here are the features that were bought at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Whiplash: Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Miles Teller and Jk Simmons.
Dinosaur 13: A documentary by Todd Miller outlining the discovery of a T-Rex skeleton in South Dakota, and the ensuing fight over its ownership.
I Origins: Written and directed by Mike Cahill, starring Brit Marling, Michael Pitt, Steven Yuen, and Archie Panjabi.

Title: Land Ho! Director: Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz Starring: Paul Eenhoorn, Earl Lynn Nelson, Karrie Crouse, Elizabeth McKee, Alice Olivia Clarke, Emmsjé Gauti There’s something remarkably simple and familiar about the notion of two retired men taking a trip and attempting to infuse some energy into their relatively mundane lives. That such a premise is so common makes the creation of a worthwhile film all the more difficult, and therefore it’s a pleasure to see Land Ho!, a marvelous and hilarious story about two men related by marriage heading to Iceland for a relaxed getaway. Land Ho! is immensely endearing and quite funny, equally due to its cast and [ Read More ]

In Martha Stephens’ lovely, evocative and deceptively simple Pilgrim Song, Timothy Morton (Team Picture) plays James, a newly unemployed elementary school music teacher from Louisville, Kentucky. A gangly fellow with a large red beard, some mean fiddle skills and an unreliable sense of direction, James finds his future hanging in the balance in more ways than one after he’s laid off from his teaching gig. Seeking some sort solace following his dismissal and an unspoken trauma that has pushed him apart from his girlfriend Joan (Karrie Crouse, also the film’s co-writer), he sets out on a trek across Kentucky’s Sheltowee Trace …...

Chad Hartigan was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, and graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts with fellow filmmakers Aaron Katz, Zach Clark, Brendan McFadden, and Karrie Crouse. "They and all the other students were my mentors," he told Indiewire. In 2008, he wrote and directed his first feature, "Luke and Brie Are on a First Date," which had its world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival before screening at several others. A Latin-American remake entitled Luna en Leo is set for release in 2013. "This Is Martin Bonner" is Hartigan’s second feature film. What It's About: "Martin Bonner has just moved to Reno for a new job in prison rehabilitation. Starting over at age 58, he struggles to adapt until an unlikely friendship with an ex-con blossoms, helping him confront the issues he left behind." What It's Really About: "The difficulties of starting over at a late stage in your life.

Maryland Film Festival (Mff) is an annual four-day event that takes place in downtown Baltimore during the first weekend of May, presenting top-notch film and video work from all over the world. Each year the festival screens approximately 50 feature films and 75 short films of all varieties -- narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, and hybrid -- to tens of thousands of audience members. This year your loyal Smells Like Screen Spirit scribes bring you a preview of some of the fantastic films that are in store for you at Mff 2012. Attenberg is certainly not as fantastically absurd as Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth, which Tsangari produced, but the two Greek films do share a certain cinematic kinship in farcically discussing the effects of overly restrictive parenting, specifically related to the social and sexual repression of the offspring. One might say that Attenberg is like the mellow chaser used to calm the crazy rush after...

Martha Stephens’ Pilgrim Song takes place, as many a SXSW 2012 film did, in the woods. James (Timothy Motton) is a music teacher recently let go due to budget cuts. The school’s principal offers him a summer teaching position which he rejects instead taking to the hills of Sheltowee Trace trail in Appalachian Kentucky. He’s married, although his wife Joan (Karrie Crouse) who is somewhat slow, helps him pack and keeps in radio (well, iPhone) contact, but does not join him on this journey. Much is left unspoken early in the relationship – Joan still has a job in a whisky distillery – perhaps they both require a break from each other as much as James requires this break from the “real world” instead of teaching summer school.
James was once a somewhat famous musician, he joins a jam one night and is seduced by a beautiful and mysterious women. Pilgrim Song,...

I pack quickly the night before leaving for SXSW. Not only do I forget to bring business cards, I don’t even pack my digital camera. I pop into a Cvs once I’ve landed in Austin and pick up a two-pack of disposable cameras. I’m surprised they still sell them.
My five day jaunt across SXSW is a flurry of rain, movies, tacos, friends, panels, and long lines. I watch Purple Rain on VHS. I watch V/H/S in a movie theater. I’m asked by multiple people if I’ve heard what this year’s Tiny Furniture is. I hear a big-four agent tell a filmmaker that he thinks they’re “really talented,” but that he hopes their next movie will be “faster.” I feel agoraphobic on an hourly basis.
I see no homeless people boosting wi-fi signals. I find it refreshing to take pictures and...

With Sundance 2012 Film Festival over, the next big one on the horizon is South by Southwest, which we’ll be heavily covering. The biggest chunk of the line-up has been announced today, which has some great premieres including 21 Jump Street, Tiff and Sundance hit The Raid, Will Ferrell‘s Casa de mi Padre, the documentary Girl Model (which we liked at Tiff), as well as the next from Broken Lizard, The Babymakers. There are many other promising titles included and you can see them all below. Check back for our coverage for the fest, kicking off March 9th.

Attendees of South by Southwest 2012 are in for a treat. 130 feature films will screen at the Austin, Texas festival taking place March 9-17. Among them are 65 World Premieres, 17 North American Premieres and 10 U.S. Premieres. The organization already announced [1] Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods would open the festival (the movie is phenomenal [2]) and today the majority of the remaining line up has been revealed. One of the highlights is the unbelievably smart and hilarious 21 Jump Street, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Both of those are World Premieres. Other highlights include The Hunter, Killer Joe, The Babymakers, frankie goes boom, God Bless America, The Imposter, The Raid, Bernie and Casa de mi Padre just to name a few. After the jump, read descriptions of all the films that have been announced so far. Before I copy and paste the rest of the list, a few minor notes.
