The recently departed William Friedkin has a fascinating relationship with the gay community, not only as the infamous director of "Cruising," but also as the director of the film adaption of "The Boys in the Band" a decade prior, a monumental work of mainstream American queer cinema (and the first Hollywood-made film to use the word "c***" on screen). It's nothing short of a miracle that a director of Friedkin's caliber is responsible for two of the most impactful queer films in history, both continually debated. But "Cruising" is on another level. Depending on who you ask, the film is either a remarkable feat or irredeemable trash, and the controversy started before Friedkin ever called "action."

Game of Thrones returned Sunday night and, along with our own genius recaps from Brian Juergens, the only other GoT commentary you can’t miss might just be Funny or Die’s “Gay of Thrones“, in which hairdresser Jonathan Van Ness breathlessly breaks down all the happenings in Westeros.
Most memorable are his pop culture pet names for various players. Can you match the Game of Thrones character to the following Gay of Thrones nicknames?
Brothel Aaron Carter
Blonde Cher
Christina Aguilera
Baby Barack Obama
Baby Kristen Stewart
Busted Josh Groban
Munchkin (okay, that’s a gimme)
These videos will help you figure out the rest!
Up first, a recap of last season to get you up to speed…
Next, a recap of Sunday night’s season premiere…

Brian Juergens has been an integral part of our success for longer than many of you may be aware. Back when we were still called AfterElton, Brian was our blog editor, and responsible for much of Ae’s content, as well as reigning in contributors (for which he deserved some kind of prize).
Brian left the site for a while, but picked up where he left off when he came back, providing movie reviews, pop culture posts, and indispensable recaps for such shows as American Horror Story, Looking, Shameless, Game Of Thrones, and most famously, True Blood.
In addition to his regular True Blood recaps, he and hubby Andy Swist (who’s made his own mark on TheBacklot) create hilarious video recaps on Brian’s site CampBlood.org (which was the first website devoted to horror films from a gay perspective).
Today is Brian’s something-something birthday, and if you...

Editor’s Note: Ed Kennedy is taking a much needed vacation, so we’re asking for help crowdsourcing today’s edition! Got a link, hot news item, Instagram pic etc. you think other readers would enjoy? As long as it’s P.G. rated and safe for work, please share in the comments. Here’s a few items to get the ball rolling…
Shia Labeouf just can’t seem to avoid unflattering press these days. Yesterday he was caught on tape headbutting somebody in a scuffle outside a London Pub. In the fuzzy video he keeps barking out, “What did you just say? What did you just say? What did you just say?” Might be a step forward since this time he’s only repeating his own words.
A new British study finds that gay couples are, on the whole, happier but less affectionate than heterosexual couples. Just hazarding a guess,...

Birthday shoutouts go to Matthew McConaughey (above) who is 44, Kathy Griffin is 53, Markie Post is 63, and Ralph Macchio is 52.
Samuel L. Jackson has been cast in the film adaptation of Stephen King‘s Cell (which has been in the planning stages since the novel debuted back in 2006). My colleague Brian Juergens informs me that the character Sam is playing, Tom McCourt, is gay in the book, so it’ll be interesting to see if they keep it, or de-gay him (but hey, if he needs tips on playing a de-gayed character, he can just ask his co-star John Cusack, who’s done it twice in his career). But I really hope they don’t, because it’s been far too long since I’ve heard a gay character say “motherf*ckin.”

By hurting people and being aggressive on the pitch, I was seen as a tough guy. And if you’re known as a tough guy it means you’re not gay.” Without Susan Boyle, the Les Miserables movie might never have happened. You hear that, Brian Juergens? We've got a lot of Game of Thrones fans around here, judging by interest in Brian Juergens' hilarious GoT recaps. But Brian is not the only one with a sense of humor when it comes to HBO's Sunday night sword and dragon saga.

Smash troublemaker Ellis (Jamie Capero) says that his character wooing Rebecca's manager doesn't mean he's gay. "It wasn’t a romantic dinner; it was very specific and calculated. It’s not about, 'He’s confuuused.' He knows what he’s doing."
Former Minnesota Twins prospect Reggie Williams would like to know why there are so many gay people now, being bold in public. He'd question anything like that in public, like if people were smoking crack.
Bilerico has an interview with Ellyn Ruthstrom, the first (and only) paid employee of the Bisexual Resource Center, a 25 year-old organization that's been trying to advance bisexual understanding in the world.
Speaking of, in the wake of the claim that Jessie J is a lesbian and not bisexual as she states, The Guardian wonders if it's easier to be a gay male pop star than a lesbian pop star, even today.

The results are in! We asked readers to name their favorite TV characters of all time and thousands responded. This year, for the first time, we weren't just asking about favorite gay TV characters. Folks could vote for characters of either gender - and all persuasions. Of course, this being AfterElton we expected gay characters to figure prominently on this list - and they do - but it is interesting to see what female and straight TV roles also resonated with the AfterElton readership.
Before we get to the actual rankings, here are a few statistics.
First, the top fifty came from a broad range of TV shows. Thirty programs were represented, and the two that made the best showing (Glee and Modern Family) placed only four characters each in the rankings.
Second, female characters nabbed 15 of the top 50 spots, or 30%.
Third, obviously a poll like this favors characters from...

Year in Review... more to come, too.
Though you know I am unfond of J. Edgar, it was super easy to make a list of the best gay characters without the noisiest ones: ol' Hoover and his much abused man Clyde. For my weekly column at Towleroad, I thought I'd wrap the year with a list on the Best Lgbt movie characters of the year so click away if you'd like a few notes on Pariah, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Potiche, and even Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Okay, the latter I only imagined but I like to engage with the movies in unexpected ways. Don't let filmmakers box you in; practice freeform movie watching!
Because the holidays are all about spreading oneself thin, I'm also a guest today at AfterElton. I met AfterElton's Brian Juergens at a Madonna event -- it's true, I met the Queen herself (M, not Brian!

I had never seen any of Alan Rowe Kelly’s films until he contacted me—literally moments after posting my first Gay Of The Dead blog. And yes, that is Alan in the photo to the left. Don’t worry, we’ll get to that later.
Kelly’s opening salvo to me was the grisly, intense and controversial A Far Cry From Home segment from the recently wrapped Gallery Of Fear anthology, which he co-wrote, co-directed and produced for his Southpaw Pictures. From there I jumped back to his first feature, I’LL Bury You Tomorrow, a loopy, sprawling, bloody feature that manages to wind storylines of seven main characters into one big crazy fest. After that, I popped in The Blood Shed, which starts off with a preteen kid being yanked in half and just gets more insane (see: awesome) from there.
