Bad days are coming for the Bordelons in OWN’s new Season 6 trailer for Queen Sugar.
The cabler dropped the official trailer Tuesday as well as the premiere date: Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 8/7c. A mask-less, post-pandemic world stands out in the highlight reel, and so does Hollywood’s toast with Ralph Angel and Prosper in which he says, “Here’s to not letting the bad days get the best of us.” Sadly, some of the darkness that awaits the men and the ones they love is shown soon after.

Anyone who has a heart had to have winced — and we’re talking a lot — watching The Haves and the Have Nots’ Angela Robinson bring to life the OWN soap’s queen of mean, Veronica Harrington. It wasn’t just that the character was as vicious as they come, it was that the harpy was horrifically homophobic.
The actress, too, cringed with some regularity. For instance, as she admits in the above sneak peek at Part 2 of the Tyler Perry drama’s reunion special (Tuesday, 8/7c), “When people come up to me and say, ‘I just love you!’ I get a little [worried] — like,...

A new, updated take to hit 1983 Paramount movie Flashdance is in early development at CBS All Access, soon-to-be-rebranded as Paramount.
The potential series hails from Paramount Television Studios, with Tracy McMillan set to write the script and Angela Robinson on board to direct.
The 1983 movie starring Jennifer Beals marked the first blockbuster hit for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the first in a string of hugely successful features for Paramount with partner Don Simpson. Bruckheimer is in the ViacomCBS family; his company is under a deal at CBS TV Studios though he is not believed to be attached to the project. (The film’s associate producer Lynda Obst is executive producing.)
The series reboot, first reported by THR, will revolve around a young Black woman with ballet dreams and a strip club reality who struggles to find her place in the world while navigating romance, money, art, friendship and how to love herself.

This year, the Sundance Film Festival is showing a strong slate of diverse filmmakers and stories such as Justin Simien’s Bad Hair, Dee Rees’ The Last Thing He Wanted, HBO’s Welcome to Chechnya, Sam Feder’s doc Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen, Bao Nguyen’s Be Water, John James’ Siempre, Luis, Janicza Bravo’s Zola among many others. Even so, this does not make up for the fact that the film festival space has been wildly non-diverse in the past. In a new study titled “Inclusion at Film Festivals” from USC Annenberg and Time Up, it was found that there was a common pattern of a lack of women and people of color in film festivals around the world — and this is a big deal because these festivals point of entry to the industry for emerging filmmakers.

A study by the Time’s Up Foundation and USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has found that women and people of color are vastly underrepresented at film festivals worldwide.
The new report, “Inclusion at Film Festivals,” examined the gender, race, and ethnicity of narrative film directors, film festival programmers, and executives from 2017-2019. The study was released Saturday, the third day of the Sundance Film Festival.
“Despite the progress that is underway, the fact is that the voices and talent of women and people of color remain marginalized,” said Dr. Stacy L. Smith, founder of the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “The data in this report makes it clear that the next generation of women of color filmmakers are not being launched into the industry at the same rate as their white male peers.”
The study will be released at Sundance during a panel conversation hosted in partnership with The Latinx House at 12:30 p.

Things are looking up for inclusion and representation when it comes to film. Then again, the only way to go is up when the numbers have been so low for over a decade. In a research brief released by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, the 100 top-grossing films of 2018 were examined. The study took a look at the leading and co-leading characters across these films and focusing on gender and race/ethnicity. Even though the results were something to applaud, there is still plenty of room to advocate for more inclusion and representation in film.
The research brief found that 40 films in 2018 featured a female in a lead or co-lead role, which is an increase from 2017 which only had 32 films that featured a woman in the spotlight. Going off of that, 11 films in 2018 featured a woman of color or from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group in...

The Universal Filmed Entertainment Group has became the first major film studio to sign on to the #4PercentChallenge, the initiative to boost work for female directors unveiled at the Sundance Film Festival last week by Nina Jacobson, Paul Feig, Amy Schumer, Angela Robinson and Franklin Leonard.
In Park City, the challenge backed by Time’s Up and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative involves committing to announcing a project with one female director — especially women of color — in the next 18 months. Already, individuals including Kerry Washington and Tessa Thompson have said they will work with a female director over that span.
The initiative stems from a study that shows only 4% of the directors of the 1,200 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2018 were directed by women.
At Donna Langley-led Universal, Peter Cramer, Peter Kujawski and Margie Cohn sealed their commitment today.

More than 50 high-profile Hollywood producers — including Reese Witherspoon, J.J. Abrams, and Jordan Peele — have committed to hiring at least one female director in the next 18 months.
The initiative is part of the Timesupx2 campaign to double the number of women in leadership positions. The effort was announced on Friday by Time’s Up and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative through the 4% Challenge.
The name is derived from women having directed only 4% of the country’s top grossing movies over the past decade. Nina Jacobson just delivered the keynote speech at Sundance’s Producers Brunch, sharing some of the insights she’s accrued during her decades-long career as a film executive. Jacobson, whose credits include “The Hunger Games,” “American Crime Story,” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” spoke about her experiences with everyone from M. Night Shyamalan to Wes Anderson — as well as the conventional wisdom she’s seen slowly upturned in recent years.
Read her full speech, which was shared exclusively with IndieWire, below:
“The only reason I became a producer was because I got fired. When it happened, I refused to give one of those transparent quotes that fired studio executives always give, saying it was their choice to step down and finally pursue their lifelong dream of becoming an independent producer. I insisted on making sure the whole world knew I was fired. Becoming a producer was more of recurring nightmare than a lifelong dream.

The team at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will get a lot of mileage out of their tuxedos at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Michael Helfand and Joe Matukewicz, the division’s two co-heads, are hitting Canada with eight films in tow — a collection that includes Oscar-hopefuls such as “The Front Runner,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Wildlife.”
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will focus on distributing these largely indie pictures in foreign territories. They usually leave the U.S. release to other studios. That may be part of the reason that, for all its activity, the division remains something of an enigma to most people.
“We’re a little under the radar,” said Matukewicz. “People sometimes don’t understand what we do because all our movies are different. No one is alike and we have a very diverse slate in terms of budget range or genres.”

Exclusive: The Amara Cash-directed Daddy Issues will premiere at Outfest in Los Angeles July 14 and in this exclusive clip (watch above) the movie’s stars Madison Lawlor and Montana Manning get into an interesting discussion about being labeled as “straight” or “lesbian.”
Daddy Issues follows Maya (Lawlor), a talented queer artist on the verge of a first love that is more complicated than anything she could imagine. Maya spends her days escaping into her drawings and social media, where she cyberstalks the aspiring designer Jasmine (Manning) — who has a co-dependent relationship with a neurotic sugar daddy. When Maya and Jasmine’s paths finally cross, they begin a romantic relationship that provides Maya her dream of first love and Jasmine the inspiration she needs to jump start her career. It’s all gumdrops and fairytales until a bizarre love triangle soon emerges, all because of “daddy issues” — hence the title.

It’s all gumdrops and fairytales until a bizarre love triangle soon emerges, all because of “daddy issues” — hence the title.
