A Netflix Original production, Ritesh Batra’s third film is an adaptation of Kent Haruf’s final novel, Our Souls At Night, set in the fictional prairie town of Holt, Colorado.
One evening, Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) pays a visit to her neighbour Louis Waters (Robert Redford), in order to make him a proposition of sorts. Addie wonders if Louis would be interested in coming over to her house and sleeping with her. What Addie is proposing is not sex – long widowed, she’s looking for companionship, the comfort of someone to talk to and sleep next to, and she wonders if Louis might feel the same way.
The two try out this experiment of sorts, much to the amusement and consternation of those around them. The awkwardness of the arrangement is palpable, but as Addie and Louis talk and learn more about each other, an obvious warmth grows between them.

Our Souls At Night
Starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda
Directed by Ritesh Batra
It starts quietly, and ends without drama, melo- or otherwise. After The Lunchbox and its tad disappointing followup The Sense Of An Ending, you know how it is with Ritesh Batra. This is a filmmaker who loves silence and embraces it with all its inbuilt hazards and uncertainties.
We’ve seen him work wonders with wordless emotions in his earlier works. So no surprise if here he once again weaves a luminous lucidity into the looming stillness of a landscape that won’t judge mankind. Kindly or otherwise.
With Our Souls At Night, a deeply stirring gentle humane drama about two autumnal souls drifting together in ways that The Bridges Of Madison County could never fathom, Batra joins the ranks of the greatest living filmmakers. And we are not speaking of India alone. Batra is a...

Robert Redford and Jane Fonda‘s incredible relationship, on and off screen, is the subject of a new tribute video from Netflix.
The clip, obtained exclusively by People, is a touching trip down memory lane for the duo, who are reuniting 50 years after playing newlyweds in the 1967 classic Barefoot in the Park for their new Netflix film, Our Souls at Night.
“Bob Redford and I started working together in our 20s,” Fonda says, as footage of their classic films play in the background. “And we’ve had a film relationship and a friendship that has gone almost 50 years,” Redford adds.

Love stories are common in Hollywood, with tales of first loves even more ubiquitous.
The new film Our Souls at Night, starring Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, is a romance between two characters who have both lost their first loves and are getting a second chance later in life. Told with with the gentle touch of a partner taking your arm on an afternoon stroll, Ritesh Batra’s “Our Souls at Night” is a wise and wistful drama about life after death; regardless of how old you are, this is the kind of movie that your parents would like. It begins with the folksy twang of a guitar and shots of streetlights blinking awake as night falls on a small Colorado town. A widower named Louis Waters (Robert Redford) sits alone in the kitchen of a house that was clearly meant for two. This is the only sort of night that he has. At least, until it isn’t. There’s someone at the door — his neighbor, Addie Moore (Jane Fonda), also on her own — and she wants to know if Louis might be interested in sleeping with her. Literally sleeping with her. It’s not about sex, it...

It’s raining in the morning ahead of the Our Souls at Night screening. The bedraggled delegates gather outside the theatre. There is a click of umbrellas, a squelch of wet shoes. It’s about to come down in bucket-loads.

One day a widow knocks on the door of a widower she barely knows, though they have lived in the same small town in Colorado for what must be 70 years, and proposes they dispel their loneliness by sleeping together. Talk and companionship, not sex, is what she’s after. He takes a day to think it over. Then he accepts her proposal.

As a big fan of the novels by Kent Haruf, I’m really wary of his work being adapted. Granted I can’t vouch for Hallmark‘s 2004 take on “Plainsong,” but generally speaking, the author’s work hinges on small moments, with heartbreak and drama unfolding in the everyday modulations of regular life. And bringing that to the big screen, or Netflix, where emotional beats are often decorated by performances and score selections and more, could bring the wrong tone to the source material.

Robert Redford and Jane Fonda are no strangers to one another’s company. It was nearly fifty years ago when they played newlyweds in Barefoot in the Park, after which they co-starred in The Chase and The Electric Horseman. Now, they’re set to star together once again in Netflix’s upcoming movie Our Souls at Night, which had its first still released over the weekend.
In their fourth outing together, Fonda and Redford play a pair of widowed neighbors who begin to sleep with one another … but not in the way you think. They literally sleep in the same bed, together. Get your mind out of the gutter. Though platonic, their relationship, nevertheless, becomes the talk of their small town. Bruce Dern, Judy Greer and Matthias Schoenaerts round out the cast.
While it’s odd to see such high-profile actors in a Netflix-exclusive, even post-House of Cards, it does make sense.

Netflix is reportedly weighing up whether to back a romance that would reunite Robert Redford and Jane Fonda on screen for the first time since The Electric Horseman in 1979.
Our Souls At Night is based on a novel by Kent Haruf about a widow in Colorado who visits her widower neighbour in the hopes of starting a romance.
