Comic books aren’t required reading for fans of Marvel movies and TV shows, but they are a great way to dive that much deeper into the origin stories of the superheroes permeating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now that “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has officially premiered on Disney+, the timing is perfect to catch up on some of the comic books revolving around the dynamic duo. The series’ pilot finds Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) embarking on a new adventure, in the midst of dealing with some personal issues. The six-episode series, which debuted on March 19, is directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer.

Disney Plus’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV series is set to see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson take on the mantle of Captain America, but it seems the situation will be flipped in the comics. Marvel’s Falcon & Winter Soldier title, created to loosely tie into the upcoming McU show, will continue later this year. And the newly released cover for issue #3 reveals that James Buchanan Barnes will be suiting up again as the Sentinel of Liberty.
Dan Mora’s cover for Derek Landy and Federico Vincentini’s comic (seen below) sees Sam and Bucky getting the jump on mentor Steve Rogers from behind. It’s a shocking tableau, but it’s hard to say whether this set-up is to be taken literally or not.
What the synopsis tells us is that the original Cap will have a strong presence in the issue, as the partners in crime-fighting...

Hydra has taken over! The Black Widow has a dangerous plan to take them down, and it may require the heroes of the Marvel Universe to cross a line they never thought they would… Helmed by Derek Landy, writer of the blockbuster, award-winning Skulduggery Pleasant series, with art by Joshua Cassara (New Avengers) it’s time for Natasha Romanoff to unite the next generation of Marvel heroes against the oncoming forces of Hydra with Secret Empire: Uprising.
“One of the overriding themes in Secret Empire: Uprising is for the heroes not to make the same old mistakes all over again,” said Landy. “The Champions, for instance, are looking for non-violent ways to stop violent opponents, and that ethos spills over into Uprising. How do a bunch of super-powered kids, brimming with optimism, factor in the Black Widow’s dark agenda when confronted with Captain America’s role in the Hydra takeover of America?...

Now that Secret Empire is finally underway, it’s consistently succeeded in sparking controversy and inciting much debate among the comic book community with each bold creative decision taken. But, then again, such a thing is to be expected when it’s revealed that Captain America is the head of Hydra and is trying to take over the world. In fact, this past weekend was marked by seeing displeased fans burning the Secret Empire Free Comic Book Day title that saw Rogers be deemed worthy of wielding Mjolnir. The unfortunate thing, however, is that had anyone actually taken the time to read this series, they’d realize how incredible it’s been so far.

From Brian Aldiss to Arthur C Clarke, 1950s Britain was rich in fantastic science-fiction novels. Here are 8 of the best...
It seems that every few years somebody announces science fiction is dead. In 2007 it was the turn of Ridley Scott, who then went on to make The Martian, so perhaps these claims should always be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly when we look back over the history of Sf writing over the years and find that it is a genre that is as much defined by current events than by any singular vision of the future.
For that reason, British science fiction in the 1950s was incredible stuff. Anxiety over the powers scientists had unleashed after the dropping the atomic bomb at the end of World War II obsessed many novelists, but so did a sense of despondency at poverty and suffering within a community...

Neil Gaiman perfectly captures the voices of Eleven and Amy in his super-scary Doctor Who short, Nothing O'Clock...
This review contains spoilers.
Some people were holding out for J.K. Rowling being the final author of this book series (the collected paperback edition is out today), or were disappointed when a writer who had already written for the TV series was announced. Likewise, some people were hoping for a person of colour or a woman to be the Twelfth Doctor. However, in both cases there is a strong argument in the incumbent's favour: they're Neil Gaiman and Peter Capaldi. That's at least a little bit exciting, surely?
Gaiman now has the chance, albeit with a limited page count, to ignore the budgetary constraints of the TV show and write the most expensive Doctor Who story he can think of. He does not. Instead, he goes...

Derek Landy's Tenth Doctor short story, The Mystery Of The Haunted Cottage, is the funniest of the series by far. Here's Andrew's review...
This review contains spoilers.
Skullduggery Pleasant author Derek Landy asked, according to interviews, for either the Tenth or Eleventh Doctors for his short story, because he favours fast-paced dialogue. He got the Tenth, as apparently someone had already claimed the Eleventh (or he was reserved for them), and although The Mystery of the Haunted Cottage is the funniest of this series by far, sometimes it feels like he's writing for the wrong Doctor.
There are still plenty of Ten's mannerisms; his arrogance, his cruel wit (he laughs at an old lady falling off her bike. Twice) and his lack of self-awareness, but when it comes to the stream of conscious tangents and speech-patterns, there are huge dollops of Matt Smith's Doctor in there.

Warner Bros. Pictures has come out on top of a bidding war for the rights to the upcoming children's book series Skulduggery Pleasant by Irish author Derek Landy.
The deal, which sources said is worth upward of $1 million, includes rights to all future books in the potential nine-book series. Landy also will adapt his debut novel.
Acquired globally by HarperCollins after a major bidding war and released six weeks ago, Landy's debut has been generating considerable heat in the kidlit world and is being translated into 25 languages. Landy, who grew up on comic books, computer games and martial arts -- he has a black belt in kenpo karate -- wrote horror screenplays before turning his attention to books. His much-hyped debut, which has been singled out for being cinematic and irreverent, reportedly got a seven-figure advance for a three-book deal.
Set in contemporary Dublin, the comic-horror-adventure novel is about a wisecracking skeleton detective named Skulduggery Pleasant and his young accomplice Stephanie, who together must prevent an attempt to bring back the evil Faceless Ones.
