Fremantle has struck a strategic development deal with Awa Studios, the film and television division of Awa.
The deal will allow Fremantle and Awa Studios to collaborate and co-develop a slate of TV projects based on Awa’s expanding IP library. The graphic fiction publisher and entertainment studio was founded in 2018 by Marvel alumni Bill Jemas and Axel Alonso, and Jon Miller.
Under the pact, the two companies will collaborate closely on “all aspects” of the partnership, with Fremantle leading on raising production finance and funding the development of projects. Fremantle will also run studio efforts and execute physical productions as well as handle international distribution for all projects launched.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In early 2021, the company established Awa Studios, its Film and TV division, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president, who will oversee the partnership with Fremantle.

Exclusive: Artists, Writers and Artisans (Awa), the creator-owned graphic novel publisher and studio, has named Matthew Anderson, a strategic advisor at James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems and former Roku chief marketing officer, to its board and tapped, Bob Cohen — former longtime legal chief of the former 20th Century Fox — as EVP and General Counsel.
Anderson will also become an investor in Awa, the start-up founded in 2018 by former Marvel executives Bill Jemas and Axel Alonso and chaired by Jon Miller. It’s been expanding, launching Awa Studios led by by Zach Studin last summer. The first two projects are feature films Chariot, acquired by Warner Bros. with Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) directing and 21 Laps producing; and Old Haunts, which is being adapted internally by screenwriter Aaron Rabin. Both are based on graphic fiction series.
Awa is backed by Lupa Systems, Sister and Lightspeed.
“We have assembled a team of senior executives, board members and backers with rare pedigree in television, film, streaming and the knowledge of how to align incentives with the outstanding creative talent that is choosing to work with Awa,“ said Jemas.
Anderson was Roku’s first chief marketing officer for seven years through 2020 when he left to join Lupa Systems. He was a major advocate for free TV initiatives, including The Roku Channel, and oversaw marketing partnerships with major streaming services and studios. He previously held top roles at News Corp., as Group Director, Strategy and Corporate Affairs, Europe and Asia, and at Sky, where he headed brand marketing and communications.
Anderson lauded Awa’s “depth in the industry” and called it “forward-thinking in its approach to talent and content.”
“Awa is fostering creative excellence with long-term ownership by creators and a unique support system that includes editorial partnership, modern marketing, TV & film development and franchise strategy,” he said.
Cohen served as EVP, Legal Affairs for 20th Century Fox – renamed 20th Century Studios after being acquired by Disney — for 25 years through early 2020. Cohen had also been EVP for Fox Stage Productions, overseeing more than a dozen shows in development and production.
He’s currently producing three upcoming Broadway productions including Mrs. Doubtfire, Secret Lives of Bees (West End, 2022) and Devil Wears Prada (Broadway, 2022).

Never underestimate the power of a good cover. I’m not just talking about sticking a poster shot up on the front, as Marvel and DC are likely to do these days, but an actual cover that gives you a brief taster of the story, that intrigues you enough to then pick up that book. Devil’s Highway did just that, standing out from most of the other covers I was leafing through. The old school, noir style cover was intriguing enough, but the muted colours were in sharp contrast to the bright red shoe lying front and centre. Why was it there? Who’s was it? The hint that something bad may have happened is always far more effective than showing something bad happening. So hats off to Awa’s Cover Editor and Cover (and interior) Artist Brent Schoonover,...

Double Take (“2T”) has announced that it will simultaneously release four new series this mid-December. These stories will star new characters as well as familiar faces from 2T’s first ten series set in a creative universe established in the cult classic Night of the Living Dead.
While 2T’s first ten series took place in a 24-hour period in April 1966, readers this time can expect a modern update to the same universe: the new series all take place in present day. But the storytelling is still just as diverse as the first ten series, which started out seemingly as zombie stories, then transformed into other genres: comedy, sci-fi, superheroes.
New series 51, Z-Mart, and Alphabet City will continue the stories of unique characters introduced last year in Remote, Dedication, and Home respectively. And 2T will also give readers a bold, new super-powered tale in Behold.
“Primarily we want to make great content.

Sixteen years ago, Bill Jemas played a lead role on the team that transformed Marvel from an insolvent comic book publisher and toy manufacturer into a world-class entertainment company. In 2013, Take-Two Interactive Software hired Jemas to start Double Take. Bill and his team commissioned a new generation of creators to deliver a wonderfully diverse and exciting universe with everything from hordes of Walking Dead to teams of superheroes, from mad scientists to attractive aliens. “We believe that Double Take is producing some of the best comic books in the industry,” said Michael Coast, senior Story Editor at 2T. “Our books appeal not just to hardcore comic book fans, but to readers who are new to graphic novels as well.” In conjunction with their graphic novels, 2T has developed the world’s first native mobile comic book player. Stories that started when the dead began to rise come to the end of their first arcs this Wednesday with Double Take’s release of Night of the Living Dead: Revival‘s #5 issues, but it’s only the dawn of a new beginning for many of the characters readers have fondly followed since last fall. To get an idea of what to expect in the #5 issues and beyond, we caught up with Sr. Story Editor and writer Michael Coast, who discussed the future for Evans County’s resilient residents.
Thanks for once again taking the time to answer some questions for us, Michael, and kudos to you and the creative crew for a stellar round of #5 issues in the Night of the Living Dead: Revival universe. These fifth issues mark the end of the initial story arcs across all ten series. How did you decide where to leave...

It started out as just another sun-splashed morning in Evans County, Pa, but reanimated corpses with insatiable appetites have stained the perfect Sunday crimson for those unfortunate enough to cross their paths. Now available from Double Take, the Ultimate Night of the Living Dead #3 issues follow the continued chaos caused by the living dead legion, resulting in hearty helpings of horror, havoc, and humor on the paneled pages.
While the #1 and #2 Ultimate Night of the Living Dead issues effectively introduced the series’ large cast of characters and diverse environments, the writers really open things up in this third round of storytelling. The zombies continue their organized assault on the citizens of Evans County, and with the body count rising, the pace picks up across all ten issues as characters are forced to face the harsh reality of being hunted by the ravenous living dead, whose ranks seem to be growing every hour.

Scientists are trying to discover a cure for it, grocery store employees are trying to survive it, and a pair of Secret Service agents are just trying to figure out what the hell is going on. The living dead infection is spreading in the ten new #2 issues of Double Take’s Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book universe, and in this second round of storytelling, the writers continue to crank out original content set in George A. Romero’s beloved Night of the Living Dead world.
When readers turned the respective final pages of the first ten issues of Ultimate Notld back in September, they saw Evans County, Pa, in the early stages of the zombie uprising. Already involved in a partnership with Take-Two Interactive software to turn its Borderlands game into a film, Lionsgate has now struck a new deal with the company’s comic-book offshoot Double Take to adapt graphic novel series Z-Men for the big screen.Taking advantage of the fact that its public domain status means anyone can set stories within the world of George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, Double Take has figured out a whole universe of comics set in the same time, launching 10 different series.Z-Men, created and written by Jeff McComsey from a story he dreamt up with Bill Jemas and featuring art by Kurt Tiede, Maxflan Araujo, Caroline Flanagan and Alisson Rodrigues, follows Secret Service agents Stuart and Clancy who are dispatched to Pennsylvania by President Lyndon B. Double Take recently launched ten new comic book series set in the world of George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. One of my favorite stories of the first wave, Jeff McComsey's Z-Men, follows a pair of Secret Service agents sent to Evans County to investigate the escalating chaos, and it's now been announced that Lionsgate and Double Take are teaming up for a feature film adaptation of McComsey's "Nervous in the Service" series.

Since its initial release in 1968, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead has captivated audiences, and as part of the public domain, Romero’s classic film has been re-explored in other stories over the years. Sometimes these projects are ill advised, but with its impressive expansion of Romero’s zombified world, Double Take’s new Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book series is a reimagining worth reading.
The Ultimate Night of the Living Dead universe has kicked off with ten individual first issues for ten separate miniseries. Overseen by Double Take General Manager Bill Jemas, these respective series all take place at various times and locations within Evans County, Pa on Sunday, April 24th, 1966: the day the dead rose to consume the living.

Today, the zombies from George A. Romero's classic 1960s horror film rise once again in ten separate first issues of Double Take's Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book series. Daily Dead recently chatted with Jeff McComsey, writer of Z-Men and Rise, who discussed expanding on Romero's living dead world, further exploring the characters of Johnny and Barbara, and much more.
Do you have fond memories of watching Romero's Night of the Living Dead in your formative years?
Jeff McComsey: I saw it at a pretty young age, probably in the mid-’90s. I remember we rented it on VHS and watched it a couple of times. It wasn’t until I was in college and we watched a bunch of old movies when we really got into it. And now since I’ve watched it professionally, I’m still impressed with what Romero did.

In September, Double Take will unleash ten premiere issues of ten separate series within their Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book universe. To give readers an idea of what to expect upon re-entering the world of George A. Romero's classic film, we caught up with Double Take's Bill Jemas, who discussed expanding Romero's world, familiar faces that may pop up, and much more.
What inspired Double Take to further explore the world of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead with ten new comic book series?
Bill Jemas: The original 1968 film is in the public domain and rife with possibilities for exploration. The scene is set, the characters well-developed and the opportunity was just too good. We tried several other universes and when we landed here, finally, all the artists' work started coming together. There is something about the film that people get behind.

For the seven people seeking shelter from the zombies in an isolated farmhouse that hellish night in the late 1960s, it seemed like dawn would never come and the nightmare would never end. But the sun did come up at the end of George A. Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead, killing the night and bringing a sole survivor into another dawn before a gut-wrenching gunshot echoed across the Pennsylvania hills. That's where the story ends in the film, but tales from Romero's zombie-plagued world will continue to be told on the paneled page in three upcoming Ultimate Night of the Living Dead comic book series from Double Take, including one that follows siblings Barbara and Johnny.

Just two months after Marvel Enterprises named Tim Rothwell president of its consumer products group, the company has initiated a management reshuffling that will see Bill Jemas, chief operating officer and president of publishing and consumer products, take on the new role of chief marketing officer, Marvel said Monday. Jemas, who rejoined Marvel in 2000 and was largely responsible for turning around the company's licensing and publishing divisions after it exited bankruptcy in 1998, will now be using his creative expertise to identify opportunities across the different divisions of the company, Marvel CEO Allen Lipson said. The reorganization is expected to take place this month.
