The producer of Dear White People (pictured) and In The Cut delivered words of encouragement in her keynote address at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“I thought there was something wrong with me and I was having such a hard time making it,” said Brown on Sunday as she reflected on early efforts to break into the business. “I thought, ‘Am I a fraud?’ And then the big one – ‘Do I deserve this?’ That mental mind-fuck is exhausting. It kept me ‘apart from’, instead of ‘a part of.’”
Earlier in her address, Brown told attendees at the DGA Theater, “You have a story to tell that’s worthy. You have experience to share. You have a valid point of view and you should know this.”

‘Alone Yet Not Alone’ Best Song Oscar 2014 nomination revoked: Nod for obscure song from equally obscure Christian movie had left many scratching their heads (photo: Kelly Greyson in ‘Alone Yet Not Alone’) Last night, January 28, 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors voted to revoke the Best Original Song Oscar nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” from the movie of the same name, and with music by Bruce Broughton and lyrics by Dennis Spiegel. According to the Academy’s press release, the decision to disqualify “Alone Yet Not Alone” "was prompted by the discovery that Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period." Following the announcement of the 2014 Academy Award nominations, several publications raised concerns about the legitimacy of the nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone...

Sometimes, the movies slated for the 2012 year are only as good as their hype. A few of these flicks only look good as a trailer, but when audiences hit the theatre, either all the best parts have been given away or expectations fall flat. Not every title bears merit, but if any blood money is to be spilt, here’s a list of curios that should really be investigated.
Beneath the Darkness (Release Date: Jan 6)
Dir.: Martin Guigui.
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Tony Oller and Aimee Teegarden.
When a group of teens witness their best friend murdered by a so-called hero, they have to figure out how to expose him and avoid being killed too. Dennis Quaid plays Ely Vaughn, the pillar of the community, but also the antagonist in this film. Interestingly enough, Vaughn is the town’s local mortician, and there’s a secret that no body knows about him.

Veteran Hollywood executive and publicist Scotty Dugan passed away on Thursday while on his way to the funeral of John Atterberry, a Death Row Records executive and film producer who was murdered in the shootings on Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street earlier this month.
According to The Wrap, Dugan, who was running press for Atterberry's upcoming Christian film "God's Country," fell ill while waiting for a Los Angeles Country Metropolitan Transit Authority train. He was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank and pronounced dead at the facility. Dugan was 52-years-old.
Jennifer Gotzon, his client and friend, said that she suspects a heart attack or brain aneurysm was to blame for his death. Gotzon told The Hollywood Reporter that he grabbed for his head before passing out.
Boasting a career in show business dating back to the 80s, Dugan worked as a reporter/editor, studio exec and public relations head.

I'm in a grand old Texas town called Smithville, shooting my next movie Doonby with a great cast and crew. The film was written and is being directed by Peter Mackenzie. The cast is an amazing group of friends new and old-John Schneider, Robert Davi, Will Wallace, Jenn Gotzon, Joe Estevez, and others. On the flight out from Lax I ran into Joe and we had a nice chat. Add a few years onto his nephew Emilio Estevez and you have Joe. He's a great guy who told me all about his great family of 10 brothers and sisters born into an Irish Catholic/Spanish family (including his brother Martin Sheen). His mother was apparently told that she couldn't have any more kids after the first two, but she ignored doctors' orders and had eight more. Love that. The film centers...

I'm writing my first blog for the Huffington Post from the set of my next film, Doonby. I'm shooting it here near Austin, Texas and I forgot how hot it can be in Texas. Just sent a runner out for extra strong antiperspirant to keep from staining every T-Shirt! Doonby is a film that's been described by the producers as Crazy Heart-meets-It's A Wonderful Life, but I call it It's A Wonderful Life without the Wonderful. Seriously though, it's a mystery/suspense/thriller and I'm really proud to be a part of it along with my co-stars Robert Davi (remember him from Die Hard?), Jenn Gotzon and the rest. I'll be blogging and maybe even vlogging from time to time from the set so stay tuned. ...

The actor who made Bo Duke a TV staple during the early 1980s will play a modern George Bailey in "Doonby."
In the feature film, John Schneider stars as Sam Doonby, a happy-go-lucky drifter who takes up residence in a small Texas town but seems suspiciously immune to the misfortunes that beset the other townsfolk.
The film is described as a cross between "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Crazy Heart" and also stars Robert Davi as the town sheriff.
Tommy Warren, who was behind the "Teed Off" series of golf comedies from National Lampoon, is producing with Mark Joseph, a marketing veteran whose campaigns included "The Passion of the Christ" and "Facing the Giants."
Joseph also is co-producing the film's soundtrack, which includes music from AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson.
"Doonby" is written and directed by British filmmaker Peter Mackenzie and will be shot at Spiderwood Studios near Austin.
