Friday marked a big win for artists in California.
The state Governor Gavin Newsom signed The Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act, a new law that will restrict California courts from using rap lyrics as evidence in criminal cases.
The landmark lesiglastion comes after the Calif. Senate and Assembly unanimously approved the bill Ab 2799 in August.
“Artists of all kinds should be able to create without the fear of unfair and prejudicial prosecution,” Newsom said of the move. “California’s culture and entertainment industry set trends around the world and it’s fitting that our state is taking a nation-leading role to protect creative expression and ensure that artists are not criminalized under biased policies.”

In his first interview with a news outlet since his racial-slur scandal broke six months ago, country superstar Morgan Wallen told “Good Morning America” co-host Michael Strahan that his use of the N-word was the result of being in a drunken climate with friends where they “say dumb stuff together,” and was not meant “in any derogatory manner at all.” He said that in the wake of the furor, he spent 30 days in rehab and has donated $500,000 to Black charities.
Of his “Dangerous: The Double Album” release, which has turned out to be the most popular album in all of music this year, Wallen said, “Before this incident my album was already doing well,” but “me and my team noticed that whenever this whole incident happened, that there was a spike in my sales. MRC Non-Fiction is announcing the production of a new documentary, “Girl You Know It’s True,” about the quick rise and faster fall of Milli Vanilli, the late ’80s pop duo that won the best new artist Grammy and sold more than 10 million records before losing it all amid a musical scandal.
The documentary about Fab Morvan and the late Rob Pilatus will be directed by Luke Korem, who directed and produced the SXSW award-winning non-fiction film “Dealt.” Korem will be a producer on the new film as well, under the banner of his Keep on Running Pictures, alongside producing partner Bradley Jackson and Fulwell 73. The latter company’s Richard Thompson is an executive producer, as is music critic and author Hanif Abdurraqib.
“Milli Vanilli has made an indelible mark on music and pop culture history, yet the truth of what happened is more bizarre than anyone knows,” Korem said.

Exclusive: In a surprising turn, we have learned that Brett Ratner is lining up a directing comeback on his long-time passion project about pop duo Milli Vanilli.
Millennium Media is teaming up with Ratner’s RatPac Entertainment on the project and is launching sales ahead of the upcoming virtual EFM.
This would mark Ratner’s first feature directing job since the 2014 Hercules.
In November 2017, seven women, including actresses Olivia Munn and Natasha Henstridge, accused the filmmaker of sexual harassment and misconduct, causing Warner Bros. to sever all ties with the producer-director with whom they had a lucrative deal.
Ratner, who has denied the claims, had kept a low profile since then until recently joining the ongoing GameStop frenzy by picking up life rights to WallStreetBets founders Jaime and Joel Rogozinski.

John Oliver opened Last Week Tonight this week with a quick review of everything that transpired in Baltimore over the last week, focusing on the often-uncomfortable media coverage by cable news. We have a very important message for cable news: Former Def Jam record executive Kevin Liles is not — we repeat not — Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons. There’s more chaos in Mariah Carey Land as she and her manager Jermaine Dupri have parted ways and veteran label executive Kevin Liles is now handling Team Mariah. As you’ll recall, Dupri was only on board as her official manager since last fall, but he and Carey have a very long history as musical collaborators, going back to 1995’s “Daydream.” He served as executive producer on Carey’s latest set, “Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse," and co-produced five tracks on the album. As you know, that album continues to circle the drain. It’s worst than if she’d never released an album because she now has this huge commercial failure around her neck. “Mariah” sold 58,000 in its first week of release in May, which was by far her poorest showing in her 25-year career. It’s a shame because the album, as overstuffed and scattered as it was,...

Earlier today, D’Angelo’s manager confirmed with Billboard that the singer’s long-awaited follow-up to 2001’s Voodoo is coming sooner rather than later. “There'll be an album this year,” said Kevin Liles. “There's 14 records so far, we might have a couple of bonus records, but all the recording is basically done and we're mixing and mastering now. Definitely, he'll be back.” The problem is, we’ve heard that before. A lot. So many times, actually, that it is possible to make a long list of D'Angelo's broken album promises — which we did, below. Cross your fingers and pray for soul, folks.April 2005Rumors begin swirling on message boards about the Voodoo follow-up. “Damn near an hour and a half of new music,” one fan speculated. Tina said: “The truth is that’s it’s not Beyonce that’s pregnant. It’s me.
“I’m kidding y’all. I’m 56. No, no the reports are not true. Not right now … With all the rumours, by now I should have 5 or 6 grandchildren.”
