Darren Criss has played queer roles over the years and is now explaining why he says he’s “culturally gay.”
One of the actor’s most remembered roles is Blaine Anderson from Glee, and during an appearance at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, he was asked about the impact of his character and the on-screen relationship with Chris Colfer’s Kurt.
“F***ing awesome,” Criss said about portraying the gay character. “It was a narrative that I cared deeply about.”
Criss identifies as a straight, cisgender male and attributes his understanding of the LGBTQ+ community to his upbringing in San Francisco, California.
“I have been so culturally queer my whole life,” he said. “Not because I’m trying, you know, actually, I was gonna say, not because I’m trying to be cool, but I’m gonna erase that, because I am trying to be cool. The things in my...

Darren Criss made headlines out of this year’s Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) for saying he’s “culturally queer” (via Entertainment Weekly). The 37-year-old actor gained fame for starring as Blaine Anderson on five seasons of the Fox musical comedy series “Glee.” Blaine was an openly gay character. Criss, who identifies as a straight, had no qualms about taking on the role and said it was “fucking awesome.”
“I have been so culturally queer my whole life,” Criss added. “Not because I’m trying — you know, actually, I was gonna say not because I’m trying to be cool but I’m gonna erase that, because I am trying to be cool. The things in my life that I have tried to emulate, learn from and be inspired by are 100% queer as fuck.”

Darren Criss and Mia Swier are parents! The couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl, on April 11 and chose a one-of-a-kind name for her: Bluesy Belle Criss. Seeing as both stars are musically inclined - Criss rose to fame as Dalton Academy Warblers lead singer Blaine Anderson on "Glee," while Swier started an all-women Guns N' Roses tribute band, plays the bass, and sings - the name is quite fitting.
Criss announced the news on April 14 by sharing an Instagram photo of him and Swier cradling Bluesy in a hospital bed, writing, "M & D made some sweet music." Tons of celebrities commented their well-wishes on the post, including fellow "Glee" star Heather Morris, who wrote, "Congrats beautiful family," with a heart-eye emoji. Criss's caption is a callback to the way he revealed their pregnancy back in October 2021; the actor shared a video of him...

It's been more than a decade since Glee's final note, but that can't make Darren Criss forget this cover. During an appearance on the LadyGang podcast, the actor, who appeared on five seasons of the Fox series as Blaine Anderson, was asked to name the worst cover performed on Glee. The question initially proved to be a bit of a challenge. "Oof, that's too hard. There's too many versions of songs," he said. "Did I just accidentally say that they were all bad?" he asked before clarifying, "What I meant was there's too many options to choose from." Still, one continues to stick out as the go-to answer. "There is one that is...

The 32nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards is bringing together the cast of “Glee” for the tenth anniversary of character Santana Lopez (portrayed by the late Naya Rivera) coming out as lesbian.
Demi Lovato, who played Santana’s girlfriend on the show, will introduce the special tribute, which will feature “Glee” cast members Jacob Artist, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Becca Tobin and Jenna Ushkowitz.
While on air, the series was nominated six times for outstanding comedy series, which it won in 2010 and 2011. Queer storylines were part of “Glee” from the beginning, most notably in the story arc of Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), whose relationship with Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss) ebbs and flows throughout much of the show.

From the moment Blaine Anderson grabbed Kurt Hummel's hand and ran through the hall, I was sold on Darren Criss being a part of Glee. Nov. 9 marked the official 10th anniversary of Criss's first appearance as Blaine on the show, and he celebrated it the only way a Gleek could: live-streaming his reaction as he rewatched his debut episode.
Throughout the Igtv, Criss let fans in on behind-the-scenes tidbits, including how he felt about the show picking Warblers to make him look as tiny as possible before singing along to the iconic "Teenage Dream" performance. He also shared a couple of photos from filming on Instagram, captioning the post, "People always tell me how Glee changed their life, and I'm always happy to remind them how yeah, it changed mine too."

Quibi is looking for a big breakthrough at the Emmys with its bite-sized shows. Of the 33 entries in the Best Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category, 12 are from Quibi, one of which is the 10-part musical comedy “Royalties.”
Directed by Amy Heckerling, the series stars Darren Criss and Kether Donohue as songwriting duo Pierce and Sara, two aspiring artists who work catering jobs to stay afloat while pursuing their passion on the side. When they finally get their first big break, they quickly find themselves navigating the hilarious and sometimes bizarre challenges of stringing together songs for some of the world’s most insane (fictional) artists. These are portrayed by a slew of well-known guest actors, including Sabrina Carpenter, Jennifer Coolidge, Mark Hamill, Julianne Hough, Lil Rel Howery, Jordan Fisher, Bonnie McKee, Jackie Tohn and Rufus Wainwright. You may have been shipping Darren Criss and Laura Harrier's onscreen romance in Netflix's Hollywood, but we're sorry to say that these two aren't an Irl item. In February 2019, Darren tied the knot with writer and producer Mia Swier, who he's been with for nearly a decade now. The couple has been together for so long that Darren wasn't even a TV star yet when they started dating. What's even wilder: the fact that Darren and Mia met through mutual friends all the way back in 2006, according to People.
When Darren took to Instagram to announce the news of their engagement in January 2018, he said that he and Mia had been dating for seven-and-a-half years, which means their relationship started sometime around July 2010. Right around that time, Darren landed his breakout role as Blaine Anderson in Glee, which Mia produced and directed promotional content for, according to her IMDb profile.

Uber-producer Ryan Murphy has made small screen stars out of A-listers and fresh faces alike.
Angela Bassett (pictured above)
Bassett starred in four seasons of “American Horror Story”, earning two Emmy nominations. She helmed two episodes as a director, the first during her final season as an actor, on “Roanoke,” before Murphy invited her back behind-the-scenes for a pivotal episode in the seventh season, “Cult.” She also signed on to star in and serve as executive producer on Murphy’s first-responder drama “9-1-1” for Fox, which is now in its second season.
Kathy Bates
Bates joined the Ryan Murphy family in 2013, with the third season of “American Horror Story,” subtitled “Coven,” and continued on through the sixth season, “Roanoke.” The Oscar winner scored three nominations and one win to date with her work on Murphy’s anthology before moving over to “Feud,” in which she played actress Joan Blondell.

Darren Criss barely looks like he’s aged a day since “Glee,” but the “Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” star is 31 years old — definitely not old, but not a whippersnapper either. But if he takes home the Emmy for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, he’d be the second youngest to prevail in the category.
Criss wouldn’t come close to dethroning the youngest winner, Anthony Murphy, who was 17 when he won for “Tom Brown’s Schooldays” in 1973. It was Murphy’s first and only acting role; he’s now a painter. No one has won the category in their 20s. Eleven people have won in their 30s, including reigning champ Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”), who was 34. Criss would bump down Peter Strauss (“The Jericho Mile”) and Powers Boothe (“Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones”), who were both 32 when they won in 1979 and 1980, respectively.

Darren Criss first stole our hearts with his role on Glee - and for some dedicated fans with his role in A Very Potter Musical - and not much has changed since. After wrapping the hit Fox series, the handsome actor, who recently got engaged to longtime girlfriend Mia Swier, has been keeping busy performing as the title character in Hedwig and the Angry Inch and even playing Prince Eric in the Hollywood Bowl's performance of The Little Mermaid. While we've certainly loved hearing his beautiful voice on stage, we're equally pumped to have his face back on our screens for Ryan Murphy's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - even if he is playing the murderous Andrew Cunanan. Now that the series has kicked off, look back at how much more attractive Darren has gotten since saying goodbye to Blaine Anderson. RelatedDarren Criss Has Been Dating...

Whether Darren Criss was shooting people in the face, puking in public bathrooms or casually rubbing his crotch while standing over a sleeping couple, he sure made Wednesday’s season premiere of American Crime Story feel like the darkest episode of Glee yet.
RELATEDAmerican Crime Story: Versace Review: Season 2 Is Ok, But It’s No O.J.
I’m half-joking, but considering this is Criss’ first series-regular TV role since Blaine Anderson warbled his final warble in 2015 (not to mention Criss’ professional reunion with Glee boss Ryan Murphy), I trust you’ll overlook my inability to disassociate — at least in this first week.

The CW has snagged another Glee actor for their superhero universe. After casting Glee alums Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin as the heroes of Supergirl and The Flash, respectively, the Greg Berlanti-produced shows have switched things up. Darren Criss, whose most notable TV role is as Blaine Anderson on Glee, will be playing the villain for the upcoming The Flash/Supergirl musical crossover, "Duet." Darren certainly has the vocal talent for the role. Yet his filmography is filled with roles of a nice and innocent nature and it is really uncertain if he will be able to pull off a character anywhere close to evil.

"Glee" just about sums up our thoughts on "American Horror Story: Hotel." Everything we hear about it makes us want to ring that bell for service stat. The show's premiere date was just revealed as Wednesday, October 7 at 10 p.m., and details are coming out about "Glee" alum Darren Criss' new role.
Here's the latest from Ryan Murphy, via Entertainment Weekly:
Do you have any scoop on the upcoming season of American Horror Story? - Tanya
We already know that Darren Criss will be checking into Hotel for the big Halloween outing, playing a hipster who shows up with his girlfriend. And this character is going to be very different from Blaine Anderson. "This role for Darren, we wrote it and he was the first person we thought of because Darren has told me he wants to do edgier, darker material, so this plays into that," executive producer Ryan Murphy teases.

And that’s all she wrote! The two-hour series finale of Glee aired last night, ending a six-year run of boundary-pushing story lines and characters. While the popular Fox show has definitely decreased in quality in its later seasons, it looks like Ryan Murphy finally listened to fans and delivered a flaw-free final act. Rachel won. Kurt won. Hell, everyone won. And that’s exactly the kind of sunshine fantasy fans needed to feel satisfied.
The finale was divided into two acts: “2009,” which took audiences back to — you guessed it — 2009, and “Dreams Come True,” which took us five years into the future. (Where Sue Sylvester is Vice President of the United States. Really.) In order to emotionally process all of last night’s feels, we’ve broken down the highlights from each episode. Grab a tissue; we promise you’ll need it.

"Glee" sings its last song on Friday, a goodbye that was very emotional for series star Darren Criss.
The 28-year-old chatted with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush about the Fox series taking the final bow after six seasons.

We know it’s hard to believe, but the last episode of Glee ~*eVeR*~ airs tonight. The New Directions have given us an incredible six years of singing, dancing, and awkward teen sexual tension, but it’s time for them to leave the show choir room for good. Admittedly, the most recent seasons of Glee haven’t been that great (this season especially, with its self-referencing jokes and out-of-control fat-shaming). However, we can’t let Ryan Murphy’s inability to craft a third act stop us from honoring Glee. When it was good, it was really fucking good. And, more importantly, it changed culture forever.
From putting gay teens on primetime to introducing us to living Ken doll/actual sex god Darren Criss, Glee wasn’t afraid to go where television had never been before. It broke racial, sexual, and gender boundaries — not to mention it brought the musical back in a big way.
