Unless you spent the whole 2016 growing potatoes on Mars, there’s a good chance you got some echoes of the controversy and headlines generated by the release of “The Great Wall”. Directed by veteran Chinese director Zhang Yimou, and produced by the Hollywood-based – but Chinese-owned – Legendary studio, it was the most expensive film made in China to that date and was thought to have opened a new era of collaboration between China and the US. The cast includes some of the most famous Chinese actors and A-list star Matt Damon. Certainly, an easy target for criticisms, and even just the release a few months prior of the first teaser and trailer had in fact unleashed an avalanche of comments and accusations, mainly of whitewashing and in particular of re-proposing the same old tale of the white hero who arrives, saves the whole China and possibly snatches a trophy-woman too. But...

June 12th features a trifecta of terror—Night of the Virgin, The Mimic, and The Jurassic Games, and June 15th sees the release of the psychological thriller Inheritance, which debuted last year at 2017's Dances with Films.

Guillermo del Toro’s “robots versus monsters” blockbuster Pacific Rim arrived in the summer of 2013 with plenty of intrigue and excitement among film fans, but it failed somewhat to gain much interest with domestic audiences. The film struggled to pass $100 million domestically, but it’s overseas box office soared to much higher as it pushed its worldwide total to just over $400 million. While not a runaway success, there has always been talk of a sequel but it was never at the top of production company Legendary’s agenda. Guillermo del Toro eventually moved onto the very strange Crimson Peak (2015) and this year’s best picture winner The Shape of Water (2017), which also got him his first directing Academy Award. Things have been good for him since 2013, but he didn’t have the time to get back in the directing chair for a Pacific Rim’s sequel when Legendary was ready,...

Pacific Rim Uprising is a cut above the standard heavy-metal action blockbuster, with a wealth of visual detail and even an occasional pulse of intelligence beating beneath all of the mayhem. But it’s still a profoundly silly movie, so keep your expectations in check and you’re likely to have a decent time with it.
Pacific Rim Uprising is set a decade after the climax of the first film, when Stacker Pentecost (as played by Idris Elba) had sacrificed himself shutting off that bottom-of-the-sea gateway between Earth and that nasty alien dimension that kept serving up those skyscraper-stomping beasts known as Kaiju. Production on the Kaiju-battling Jaegers, the equally-immense robots controlled by pilots positioned inside their heads, has continued. Our hero for the sequel is Stacker’s son Jake (John Boyega), introduced as a grifter, cheating those looking for weapons and war relics. He’s convinced by his long-lost...

"That's what I'm talking about!" Nothing can prepare you for how much CGI this trailer has! Universal has released a final IMAX exclusive trailer for the sci-fi sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising, the action packed kaiju vs giant robots movie. Guillermo del Toro produced and help write the story, Steven S. DeKnight (of TV work) is directing. This sequel picks up after the first movie, following John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba's character Stacker Pentecost. The movie's ensemble cast includes Adria Arjona, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Rinko Kikuchi, Dustin Clare, Levi Meaden, Daniel Feuerriegel, Karan Brar, and Jin Zhang. This trailer is packed with some crazy epic footage of the kaiju vs robots battles, but I'm honestly not that excited to see it. A bit too much CGI. What about you? Here's the final IMAX trailer (+ poster) for Steven S. DeKnight's Pacific Rim: Uprising,...

A new trailer for Universal’s upcoming monster epic ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising‘ has been unveiled, and it features pretty much everything you’s expect from a ‘Pacific Rim‘ movie. The sequel to 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim‘, which was jump-started by Guillermo Del Toro, sees John Boyega‘s Jake Pentecost leading a Jaeger uprising after Kaiju mysteriously begin to appear once again. The trailer itself features a few new surprises, but the most interesting has to be the shots from Jaeger vs Jaeger battle that is teased in the trailer, simply because of the story implications that it provides. It seems that the reason for the Kaiju return is due to someone re-opening the portal form earth. Interesting twist on the story of the original to say the least.

"We're going to need more violence." How is that actually a line in the movie? Universal has unveiled a second official trailer for the sci-fi sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising, the action packed kaiju vs giant robots sequel following-up Guillermo del Toro's movie a few years ago. Del Toro produced and help write the story, but is letting Steven S. DeKnight direct. This sequel picks right up after the first movie, following John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba's character Stacker Pentecost. The movie's full ensemble cast also includes Adria Arjona, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Rinko Kikuchi, Dustin Clare, Levi Meaden, Daniel Feuerriegel, Karan Brar, and Jin Zhang. This looks like it might be entertaining, barely. I'm not really into this that much, even with Boyega kicking kaiju ass. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Steven S. I don't know about you, but I'm actually pretty pumped up about director Steven S. DeKnight's Pacific Rim Uprising. I enjoyed the first film for what it was and it looks like this sequel is going to be just as entertaining. Who knows, maybe there's a chance that it could turn out even better.
What I liked so much about the first movie is that it really brought out that kid in me and if this sequel is able to once again capture that magic, of course, I'm going to enjoy it! The Breach may have been closed in Pacific Rim, but that doesn't mean it can't be opened in the upcoming sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, which is teased in a new trailer that was unleashed at New York Comic Con.
You can view the new Pacific Rim Uprising trailer below. Scheduled for a March 23rd, 2018 release, Legendary and Universal's Pacific Rim Uprising stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Attack the Block) as the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character portrayed by Idris Elba in the original film. The cast also includes Cailee Spaeny, with Scott Eastwood expected to play a key role as well. Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions is producing the project along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and Guillermo del Toro.
Pacific Rim Uprising was helmed by Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Netflix’s Daredevil), who took the directing reins of the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film.

Ten years have passed since Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi’s heroes channeled their inner Stacker Pentecost and canceled the apocalypse, but the years have not been kind to the Ppdc’s (Pan Pacific Defense Corps) Jaeger program.
Written off as a costly and unnecessary endeavor once the Kaiju have been defeated, by the time Pacific Rim: Uprising begins, those towering mechs will ostensibly be collecting dust – that is, until those otherworldly creatures begin to claw their way back from beyond the Breach. And so, the Ppdc begins to mount a defense against yet another mass invasion.
Headed up by two Jaeger pilots – played here by John Boyega (The Force Awakens) and Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad) – the Mark VI fleet of Pacific Rim: Uprising is armed to the teeth with WMDs and other bells and whistles. Heck, one could even argue that each bipedal Jaeger is a Wmd in and of itself,...

For the longest time, it looked certain that Pacific Rim would be remembered as a super-sized flash in the pan.
Guillermo del Toro’s larger-than-life blockbuster struggled to pull in enough box office receipts four years ago, leaving the future of the monsterverse in jeopardy. As time wore on, and the franchise was handed a lifeline in the form of Legendary’s Chinese buyout, Pacific Rim 2 was suddenly back on the table.
One name change and two release dates later and we now stand on the verge of Pacific Rim: Uprising, Steven S. DeKnight’s (Daredevil) gigantic sequel told through the lens of Jake Pentecost, a rebellious Jaeger pilot portrayed by John Boyega of Star Wars fame. If that name rings a bell, it should; he’s the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s booming leader who effectively cancelled an apocalypse in 2013. Now, the Kaiju are ready to stage their resurgence,...

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. A couple new posters have been released for director Steven S. DeKight's Pacific Rim Uprising. One of the posters offers us our first good look at Scott Eastwood in the film. As you can see, he's all suited up and ready to ride into battle piloting his Jaeger the Gypsy Avenger. He and John Boyega's characters are co-pilots in the story. We got our first poster featuring Boyega's character earlier this week. I've also included another poster for the film that you can check out below. It's more of a stylized piece that comes with the tagline, "Rise Up".
It’s been ten years since The Battle of the Breach and the oceans are still, but restless. Vindicated by the victory at the Breach, the Jaeger program has evolved into the most powerful global defense force in human history. The Ppdc now calls upon the best and brightest to...

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising‘ is a little over six months away, and we have yet to see much from the film. Last month, we learned that the film had delayed it’s release date nearly a month. Well, it seems that we will have to wait another few weeks, as the first official trailer for ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising‘ is set to be revealed at New York Comic-Con 2017.

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ is getting delayed for another month. Variety is reporting that Legendary/Universal will be moving the film’s release date back a month to March 23, 2018. The previous Release date exactly a month earlier was the latest in a string of release date changes that span both 2017 and early 2018.
Steven S. DeKnight steps into the directors chair, with a script that was co-written with Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin, from a story by Guillermo del Toro. The film stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Charlie Day, Adria Arjona, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi in the sequel.

Fans who enjoyed Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 romp Pacific Rim will have to wait just a little bit longer to catch its sequel. Deadline is reporting that the John Boyega-starring Pacific Rim: Uprising has been pushed back one month.
Instead of hitting theaters on February 23, 2018, the flick will now be gracing theaters on March 23 of the same year. The competition it’ll be going up against is a bit questionable. Coming out that same weekend is Jamie Foxx’s Robin Hood reboot. Admittedly, given that no one has been asking for that film, we think it’s a pretty safe bet that Uprising will take that weekend. The weekend after, however, it will be going up against Steven Spielberg’s juggernaut Ready Player One, which is expected to do all sorts of business.
The date that Uprising settled on previously unclaimed weekend, but it was only one week after the release of Black Panther.

Kong is back, transformed into a ‘MonsteVerse’ colossus suitable for combat with Kaiju-sized foes. The key inspiration is video games but the day is saved by capable performers in mostly amusing roles. Even though the show treats its fantasy halfway seriously, it’s still an infantile guns ‘n’ monsters romp, embellished with impressive visual effects.

Join the Jaeger Uprising! Well, this is a cool way to introduce the new movie. Legendary + Universal have debuted a viral teaser trailer video for Pacific Rim 2, known as Pacific Rim: Uprising. The video is an advertisement explaining what exactly a Jaeger is (the giant fighting robots controlled by two people who interlink via brain technology) and ends with an upbeat message encouraging fans to sign-up to be a Jaeger pilot. "Now accepting pilot applications" at GoJaeger.com. The video also features our first look at John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, in his Jaeger helmet. The full cast of the sequel includes Scott Eastwood, Tian Jing, Adria Arjona, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Rinko Kikuchi, and Karan Brar. I hope we get to see an actual trailer with real footage soon, but for now this is a cool way to start the Jaegar hype yet again. Here's the new "Jaeger Uprising...

The first teaser trailer has been released for Pacific Rim: Uprising and it comes in the form of a recruitment video. It gives us our first footage of John Boyega in the movie and it looks like he's ready to kick some Kaiju ass. There was a viral site that was also launched, GoJaeger.com, which has revealed five new Jaegers that will be in the sequel! I included the photos and information on each of those Jaegers below the teaser trailer. But first, here's a little information that gets us up to speed on where the film starts off.

As the Internet grinds to a halt in anticipation of San Diego Comic-Con, Legendary has unleashed the first teaser trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the Steven S. DeKnight-directed creature feature that places John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) in the driving seat.
For when the Kaiju stage their resurgence, the former Attack the Block actor will lead the human resistance as Jake Pentecost, son of the apocalypse-canceling Stacker (Idris Elba). That leaves Boyega with some mighty big boots to fill – both human and otherwise – if he’s to command the story in the spirit of his on-screen father, but we’re quietly confident that the rising star is ready to step up to the plate. You’ll be able to catch a fleeting glimpse of him suited up at the tail-end of Uprising‘s first teaser, which spends close to...

Magnificent, breath-taking spectacle. A glorious, gorgeous testament to mankind’s creativity. Looks really good in 3D. All of this and more can be used to describe The Great Wall of China. The Great Wall of filmmaker Zhang Yimou, however, is another thing entirely.
Following the intense furore surrounding the creation and marketing of The Great Wall, the film itself is here for all to see and judge. Erasure? White saviour trope: the movie? The Great Wall of China with a coat of whitewashing? As it turns out, not quite, but that’s not to say the movie is without its problems.
The great face of The Great Wall’s controversies is Matt Damon, cast as brooding mercenary William Garin.

Now known as Gipsy Avenger, the gallery of pictures – as relayed to us by /Film – offer up what is undoubtedly our best look at the towering Jaeger to date, and we assume Avenger will be leading the charge against the invading Kaiju come 2018. The Force Awakens star John Boyega and Scott Eastwood are expected to climb into the hot seat, potentially straddling the same neural bridge in the process. A new promo poster and photo of an action figure has surfaced online for the new Gypsy Avenger jaeger that will be introduced in Steven S. DeKnight's Pacific Rim: Uprising. This is basically an upgraded version of the Gypsy Danger that we saw in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
There's a good chance that this jaeger will be the one piloted by John Boyega's character Jake Pentecost and Scott Eastwood as Nate Lambert. On top of the design of the Gypsy Avenger, the poster also reveals some specs for the jaeger, which includes 2.0 versions of the Elbow Rockets and the Chain Sword that we saw used in the first version of the Gypsy Danger.
The Gypsy Avengers also includes and Airborne Launch System and a dual vortex turbine in its chest. That's gotta give this thing some wicked power as the Gypsy Danger only has a single turbine.

The Lost City of Z star says his absence from Pacific Rim 2 was all about following his heart...
It’s not often that an actor walks away from a role in a major franchise, not necessarily because he or she doesn’t want to return but simply because they are contractually obligated to do so. In the case of Charlie Hunnam, who played the main character in Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monsters-vs-robots epic Pacific Rim, he did manage to get out of a second movie - but not due to any bad feelings about coming back for a second installment.
See related Celebrating Deadwood Timothy Olyphant interview: Justified, Deadwood & more...
Instead, it was Hunnam’s devotion to a new version of Papillion - the story of French prison escapee Henri “Papillion” Charriere that was made into a classic 1973 film starring Steve McQueen -- that forced him to make a choice.

In an industry increasingly fueled by franchises, it came as little surprise when Legendary Entertainment used their splashy Comic-Con 2014 appearance to confirm their intentions to develop their so-called “MonsterVerse.” Hot on the heels of the release of Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla,” Legendary announced they had picked up the rights to other classic Toho beasts Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, teasing the audience with a title card that read “Conflict: inevitable. Let them fight.”
But before those inevitable battles can hit the big screen, there was a necessary amount of groundwork to lay. Enter Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ “Kong: Skull Island,” this weekend’s big release and the second entry in the burgeoning MonsterVerse. While Vogt-Roberts’ Vietnam War era-set adventure drama works well enough on its own, the film also introduces a slew of new monsters that make it clear that there are all kinds of M.U.T.O. Kong: Skull Island marks the triumphant return of King Kong to the theater for the first time since 2005 when Peter Jackson thought it was a good idea for a giant ape to ice skate with a damsel in distress, much to the chagrin of critics and audiences everywhere. With a new story faithful to the spirit of the 1933 original, Kong Skull Island is a roaring, chest-pounding triumph. After a WWII-set prologue on an uncharted island in the Pacific, Kong Skull Island jumps ahead to 1973. Scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) of the same Project Monarch (one of several reference to the recent Warner Bros Godzilla reboot) persuades a senator (Richard Jenkins) to let him convene a military team to help survey a mystical, skull-shaped island. This crew includes freelance mercenary James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), hotheaded Army colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) and photojournalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) who brags about having helped turn public opinion against the waning Vietnam War.
