When director Damian Szifron’s serial killer thriller To Catch a Killer was first announced (under the title Misanthrope), Glen Basner – CEO of financier FilmNation Entertainment – said he believed the project could turn out to be “a decade defining film”. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t make much of an impact when it reached theatres in late April. But maybe it will reach its audience when it’s available on home video. Distributor Vertical Entertainment has now announced that To Catch a Killer will be receiving a VOD release later this month. It will be available on all On Demand platforms as of May 16th.
The film stars Shailene Woodley (Divergent), Ben Mendelsohn (Captain Marvel), and Jovan Adepo (the Watchmen TV series).
Directed by Szifron from a script he wrote with Jonathan Wakeham, To Catch a Killer has the following synopsis: A modern-day Clarice Starling, Eleanor (Shailene Woodley) is a young...

In 2014, Argentine writer-director Damian Szifron made a considerable splash with “Wild Tales.” The Oscar-nominated, Almodóvar-produced feature consisted of six escalatingly over-the-top stories that put a blackly comic slant on human behaviors at their worst, adding up to a flamboyantly enjoyable whole. It’s surprising that it’s taken him nearly a decade to deliver his next feature, and more surprising still that it turns out to be his English-language debut “To Catch a Killer.”
This Baltimore-set thriller, with Shailene Woodley as a cop helping FBI agent Ben Mendelsohn track down a mass shooter, is the screen equivalent of a page-turner: a solid investigative procedural that breaks no new ground, but delivers sufficient suspense, character interest, and action in confident fashion. Nonetheless, it’s a curiously impersonal, straight-ahead genre piece for a writer-director who so assertively staked out his terrain as an auteur the last time around. Vertical Entertainment is opening it on 500+ U.

If a tired retelling of a serial killer thriller premieres in theaters and nobody sees it, did it actually happen? Unfortunately, yes.
For “To Catch a Killer,” her first feature in two years, Shailene Woodley (who also produces the film) attempts to craft her own take on the inimitable Clarice Starling. But we’ve all already seen “To Catch a Killer” before: The thriller is in the vein of everything from “Silence of the Lambs” to “Zodiac,” even “The Dark Knight” and “The Batman.” Imitation? It’s not always the highest form of flattery.
The film marks director Damián Szifron’s English-language debut. Once a hot filmmaker after collaborating with producer Pedro Almodóvar on 2014 Cannes-selected satirical film “Wild Tales,” which had the biggest opening in Argentinian film history at the time, Szifron effectively disappeared from filmmaking for over a decade despite being set to helm Mark Wahlberg’s “Six Billion Dollar Man” remake.

Three weeks ago, we saw a trailer for the serial killer thriller To Catch a Killer, which is set to receive a theatrical release on April 21st. Now a poster for the film has arrived online, and you can take a look at that at the bottom of this article.
To Catch a Killer is a project we first heard about way back in May of 2019, which is when Shailene Woodley (Divergent) signed on to star in and produce the film. More than a year and a half later, Ben Mendelsohn (Captain Marvel) and Jovan Adepo (the Watchmen TV series) were cast alongside Woodley. That was right before production began on the film that was then known as Misanthrope. Two more years down the line, it’s finally ready to make its way out into the world.

From director Damián Szifron, Vertical Entertainment’s To Catch a Killer is headed to theaters on April 21, and the official trailer today carries strong Silence of the Lambs vibes.
In fact, the press release describes Shailene Woodley‘s main character as a “modern-day Clarice Starling,” of course the heroine played by Jodie Foster in the 1991 horror classic.
In To Catch a Killer, “A modern-day Clarice Starling, Eleanor (Shailene Woodley) is a young police investigator wrestling with the demons of her past when she is recruited by the FBI’s chief investigator (Ben Mendelsohn) to help profile and track the work of a disturbed individual. As the police and FBI launch a nationwide manhunt, they are thwarted at every turn by the individual’s unprecedented behavior. Given her tortured psyche, Eleanor may be the only person who can understand the mind of their assailant and bring him to justice.”
Ben Mendelsohn and Jovan Adepo also star.

While we’re not expecting this fourth feature to land with the same ripple effects as what occurred when Damián Szifron‘s Wild Tales competed for the Palme d’Or back in 2014, Misanthrope remains a huge curiosity item. Wrapping up in ’21, we find Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn toplining a project that falls into the genre psychological thriller parameters as in the the Argentinean filmmaker’s 2003 film The Bottom of the Sea. Filmed in Montreal in January of 2021, Szifron co-wrote the project alongside Jonathan Wakeham (who also had Midas Man to be released this year) and it was acquired for 2023 drop by the Vertical Entertainment folks.…...

Exclusive: Filming on Beatles manager movie Midas Man did not restart last month as planned.
The plan was for filming to recommence in late November but the restart has been pushed to late January as new director Sara Sugarman gets acclimatized and the production has a planned pause over Christmas. The film’s original director Jonas Akerlund left the project in mid-November. Some of the original crew also left.
The independent movie will have had a three-month break from filming by the time cameras roll again and multiple people working on the film have now expressed concern to us about the project’s funding. We understand the feature has not been bonded.
However, the production tells us there are no funding or scheduling issues: “There is no delay. Midas Man filming remains very much on schedule to complete the movie. The new production team is now on board. U.S.

As previously announced, filmmaker and acclaimed music director Jonas Akerlund (Lords Of Chaos) is directing and will have an input on the soundtrack.

Shoot will take place at Twickenham Studios and on location in London, Liverpool, and the U.S. Dates have not yet been revealed.
Rising Brit actor Fortune-Lloyd, whose credits also include Wolf Hall and Medici, played chess prodigy-turned-journalist Townes, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy, in Netflix’s hit series The Queen’s Gambit.

Multi-Grammy winning director Jonas Akerlund is to helm “Midas Man,” a movie about The Beatles’ manager and music impresario Brian Epstein, it was confirmed Thursday.
Epstein discovered The Beatles – indeed Paul McCartney referred to him as “the fifth Beatle” – and they signed a contract with him in 1961. He also worked with music artists such as Gerry and the Pacemakers and Cilla Black, and helped promote musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Cream and Pink Floyd.
The film is described as “an emotional, witty, heartfelt story of the joy of success and the terrifying pressures of unspeakable risk and unfulfilled desire,” in a statement from the producers, Trevor Beattie and Jeremy Chatterton at Trevor Beattie Films, and Kevin Proctor and Perry Trevers at StudioPOW.
Beattie said Akerlund had a “rock and roll heart,” and “understands music and the music industry.”

The 2017 Loco Film Festival begins in London on the 4th of May at the BFI Southbank. In its 6th iteration the founders of the festival are using their spotlight to focus on the theme of hope.
In this exclusive piece co-founder Jonathan Wakeham talks us through his highlights of the festival, and why we need comedy films now more than ever.
Programming a film festival is like having children: you shouldn’t really have a favourite. But at our sixth Loco London Film Festival it’s hard not to highlight Aki Kaurismäki’s Berlin Best Director winner The Other Side of Hope.
That’s partly because, like all of Kaurismäki’s films, it’s beautifully written, acted and filmed, every frame a perfect composition glowing with his signature rich 1950s colour palette. It’s deeply touching too, spiked with deadpan humour and features many of his regular players...

• Jonathan Wakeham's top 10 satirical comedies
Fifty years ago, Stanley Kubrick co-wrote and directed the film Dr Strangelove. It's now a comedy classic, but it was adapted from a book called Red Alert by an Raf officer named Peter George – an entirely serious indictment of the supposedly failsafe systems designed to prevent nuclear war.
Kubrick was fascinated by nuclear conflict. But the more he read about the situation, the more he became convinced that a realistic treatment simply couldn't dramatise the absurdity of the situation: that each side possessed enough weaponry to destroy the world several times over; that winning a nuclear war was like winning a suicide race.
What emerged was not the serious drama that Peter George had intended, but a dark and brilliant comedy that still informs the way we look at global conflict.
