"Million Dollar Baby" was Clint Eastwood's second Best Picture winner — and, I've a feeling, narrowly missed out on being his third, because there was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for "Mystic River" in 2003. Unfortunately for Eastwood, that happened to be the year voters had earmarked as the year to celebrate Peter Jackson's brilliantly executed Middle-earth saga with the release of its concluding chapter "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." Still, I bet it was a closer vote.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of "Million Dollar Baby" taking Best Picture is that, looking over the near-century-long list of winners, it's likely in the top five of awardees you never want to watch again — not because it's bad, but because it's horrifically depressing. Eastwood successfully sets the film on a familiar sports movie trajectory, but then it veers shockingly off course into a despairing third act.

Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

Ever since The Masked Singer‘s U.S. debut in 2019, many fans have become skilled at quickly and correctly predicting who is behind the masks. The panelists … not so much. Ken Jeong has gained a reputation as the worst guesser with his out-there and often incorrect predictions. Robin Thicke has gotten it right many times, but he’s also guessed incorrectly on several occasions. Even Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger, who won Golden Ear trophies for the most accurate guesses, have been stumped. Here are The Masked Singer panelists’ worst guesses of all time.

During Real Time on Friday night, the comedian shared his thoughts on the highly discussed topic across social media, with stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Hanks, Maude Apatow, Gwyneth Paltrow and O’Shea Jackson Jr. previously weighing in.
“Enjoy the good life, nepos. Just don’t say you didn’t have a huge advantage, or it didn’t matter that much who your parents were, or it just got my foot in the door,” Maher said, showing a montage of celebrities. “This is fucking show business, getting your foot in the door is 80 percent of it.”
The host went on to list many industries that are “full of nepo babies,” including Hollywood, politics and modeling. But he claimed the sports world is one of the few entertainment fields that hasn’t “fallen to nepotism.”

Exclusive: American Gladiators, the classic competition series that originally premiered in 1989, is taking another shot at the obstacle course.
Deadline understands that MGM has teamed with WWE for a reimagined version of the non-scripted series that will feature a slew of WWE wrestling superstars.
Mark Burnett and his team are currently pitching the rebooted series, which is based on the format created by Johnny Ferraro and Dan Carr, to broadcasters and platforms.
It seems like good timing for the Hollywood studio and Vince McMahon’s wrestling federation given the success of physical competition series in the non-scripted space from American Ninja Warrior to Floor Is Lava and Holey Moley, as well as the growing focus on WWE with Netflix’s interactive film Escape the Undertaker and a documentary series about McMahon from Bill Simmons as well as Blumhouse TV scripted series The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon in the works.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “The Titan Games” debuts its second season Monday, an installment that features former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz among the six pro-athlete competitors that the show’s “everyday” contestants go head-to-head with in hopes of winning the “Titan Champion” title and a $100,000 prize.
Fans could smell the new level of intensity The Rock was cooking up for Season 2 of his NBC competition series when he announced the addition of elite athletes — including Cruz, Claressa Shields, Joe Thomas, Cruz, Hannah Teter, Jessie Graff and Tyron Woodley — as an obstacle for “The Titan Games'” amateur contestants. And if the everyday people vs. pros aspect, a pro-wrestling legend as host, and a humongous set piece for the final challenge made you draw a comparison between The Rock’s series and the network’s short-lived Hulk Hogan-hosted “American Gladiators” reboot, Cruz is here to vouch for how different the two are.

“The Masked Singer” wrapped its second season on Wednesday night, but the bizarre reality competition won’t be off TV for too long. The Fox hit is returning with a brand new season in less than two months, landing the plum post-Super Bowl slot in early February.
Season 3 was cast back in September, and the team behind the show is pleased with their celebrity contestants.
“We’ve got some really good, big names. And we’ve got a real variety of people, which is fantastic,” showrunner and executive producer Izzie Pick Ibarra tells Variety of the new cast.
“We have a wish list,” Ibarra explains of the casting process. “We do our research for who might be interesting for the show, so the way we cast is mixture of things that we look for — we look for people who have amazing stories that can drive that person’s narrative throughout their singing on the show,...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s Season 2 finale of “The Masked Singer.”)
Fox’s oddball, smash-hit celebrity singing game show “The Masked Singer” ended its second season Wednesday, revealing at the end of its two-hour finale the identity of not one, not two, but three of its famous contestants — including the winner.
After The Flamingo, The Fox and The Rottweiler — the trio of remaining competitors — performed, it was time for panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke to choose which member of the group would win the Golden Mask trophy, and that ended up being Fox.
“The Real” co-host Adrienne Bailon was unveiled as the singer behind the Flamingo mask, while the Rottweiler’s true identity turned out to be singer Chris Daughtry. And last, but certainly not least — because he won — was Fox, who ended up being none other than comedian Wayne Brady. See our interview with Brady here.

“This has been the coolest, most amazing, most touching, most challenging, weirdest, and this is the weirdest — and I host ‘Let’s Make a Deal.’ But, God, I mean, really I’m gonna take this with me forever,” Brady said following the unmasking. “This show is amazing because of the mask you lead talent-first. If you’ve been watching Season 2 of Fox’s wild and wacky reality TV show “The Masked Singer,” you’ve probably noticed an interesting pattern. The first four celebrities to be eliminated aren’t, shall we say, famous for their singing abilities. And the fifth, Paul Shaffer, is mostly known for being a musician as opposed to a chart-topping pro singer.
However, when we asked the show’s fans if they thought it was fair for people with music backgrounds to compete against athletes, gamers, talk show hosts, etc, the results were overwhelming. A whopping 70% of poll respondents proclaimed “Yes it’s fair,” while only 30% voted “No it’s not fair.” Do you agree or disagree with those poll results? Sound off down in the comments section.

It’s understandable that the judges on “The Masked Singer” will make some unorthodox guesses as the identities of the show’s performers. They’re going off of vague clues (given in a distorted voice) as well as the performer’s figure and voice. On episode four of “The Masked Singer” six celebrities returned to sing for survival. Of these, four were put through by the audience after their first appearances on the show (the Butterfly and Thingamajig in episode one and the Black Widow and Flamingo in week two). The other two contestants — the Leopard and Skeleton — only made it through when they won over the judges. Their respective opponents, Panda and Egg and, were revealed to be boxer Laila Ali and skater Johnny Weir.
Both the Leopard and Skeleton are hoping to avoid a sing-off again. We’ve been doing some detective work and have all “The Masked Singer” spoilers for week four, including the real name of the Leopard.
The height of the Leopard combined with his over-the-top manner has us convinced that he is NBA all-star Dennis Rodman. Before the Leopard sang on episode 2, the judges had thought this was a woman,...

Wednesday’s fifth episode of “The Masked Singer” will be one to watch out for, as Nicole Scherzinger finally reunites with her one true love, Thingamajig. The judge has declared she wants to “marry” the green monster, and now he’ll appear on stage for the first time since the Season 2 premiere. Joining Thingamajig on October 16 will be Black Widow, Butterfly, Flamingo, Leopard and Skeleton. Each costumed celebrity will perform once for the votes of the in-studio audience and panelists Nicole, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy and Robin Thicke, with the loser having to unmask in front of America.
“I would date him after that vocal performance,” Nicole will declare about Thingamajig while playing with her hair. Following his performance, Nicole and the monster will share a special moment as both give each other air hearts. “I’d marry you,” she whispers. Does Thingamajig feel the same way? We’ll all find out Wednesday night.
