From Thursday through Saturday last week, 775,000 fans crowded into downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft, setting a new attendance record for the event in the process. Football took center stage, but music was very much along for the ride, as Detroit’s rock and hip-hop royalty rubbed elbows with its sports legends, in some cases literally. Detroit Lions superfan Eminem, who’s also been known to rap a bit, joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell onstage to open the draft on Thursday night, while Lions legend Barry Sanders hung out with Bob Seger and Big Sean,...

Eminem, in addition to being a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted rapper, is also a long-suffering Detroit Lions fan. In a promo cut before the team’s playoff game Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, Eminem asks former Lions (and now Rams) quarterback Matthew Stafford to help him and Detroit out.
“Stafford, what’d I say?” Eminem asks in the video NBC shared during Saturday’s Chiefs-Dolphins game. “You owe me this favor, bro. I was there for you when you won it. I was there for you. I was right there.

Prime Video Sports has greenlit a feature-length documentary about NFL star wide receiver DeSean Jackson, the former Philadelphia Eagles great and three-time Pro Bowler who announced his retirement from the league earlier this week.
The untitled documentary is based around footage that DeSean Jackson’s brother, Byron Jackson, began filming 30 years ago. “It started as an attempt to reconnect with his father, but turned into the project of a lifetime — following DeSean’s unexpected rise from nine-year-old Pop Warner prodigy to one of the best wide receivers in NFL history,” a press release describing the film explains.
The project features thousands of hours of intimate home video which, the release notes, “reveals a profoundly complex relationship between two brothers, their father and what it really means to be family, all while under the immense pressure to play football at the highest level.”

‘Bye Bye Barry’ Overtakes ‘Kelce’ To Become Prime Video’s Most-Watched Documentary Film Ever In U.S.
Exclusive: There’s a new sports documentary on top at Prime Video.
Bye Bye Barry, which tells the story of hall-of-fame running back Barry Sanders, has become the streamer’s most-viewed documentary movie ever in the U.S. — taking the title from Kelce, just over two months after that sports doc set the record for Prime Video.
In the documentary, Sanders finally explains why he retired from the Detroit Lions in 1999 while at the height of his career. It’s an explanation that sports fans appeared eager to hear, given the film had the biggest first week of any documentary movie ever on Prime Video in the U.S. after debuting on November 21.
Bye Bye Barry premiered at No. 1 among Prime Video’s Top 10 domestic films and has remained there ever since, according to the streamer.

Sports fans tend to feel proprietary about their heroes, as if stars owed us more than the heroics and physical sacrifice they provide on the field or court. The better the athlete, the more we expect and demand. So, when all-world Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders announced his retirement in 1998, after ten exemplary seasons with a largely losing team, fans were angry. How dare he? Doesn’t he know we love watching him? Some of the aggrievement was due to the way Sanders walked away, with a fax (remember those?...

Barry Sanders is arguably the greatest running back to ever play in the NFL. He’s one of eight players to have rushed for at least 2,000 yards in a season. He’s one of 10 players to have won the Heisman Trophy in college at Oklahoma State and have a bronze bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He’s third on the NFL’s all-time rushing list with 15,269 yards. Sanders was the perfect blend of quickness, speed, power and elusiveness. He left trails of would-be tacklers lying stunned on the turf. On a famous Nike TV commercial featuring Dennis Hopper, he was described as a “cannonball loose inside a pinball machine.” As a player, Sanders generally eschewed the spotlight. He was not particularly interested in statistical milestones or setting individual records. His focus was on winning a Super Bowl championship for the Lions and the city of Detroit.

The Kelce brothers have scored a touchdown for Prime Video.
Kelce, the documentary chronicling Philadelphia Eagles team captain and All-Pro center Jason Kelce’s epic year leading to his Super Bowl Lvii matchup against his brother Travis, is now the streamer’s most-watched documentary ever in the U.S. It beat out Val for the top spot.
After premiering on September 12, Kelce had the biggest first three days ever for a documentary film in the U.S. It debuted at No. 1 and has remained in the Top 5 movies on Prime Video throughout the first three weeks of its release.
Amazon didn’t release any viewership numbers for the film, though it will surely be somewhere on the Nielsen streaming charts in the coming weeks (Nielsen reports streaming audience data about a month delayed).

Exclusive: Emmy-award winning director Steve Trout of NFL Films was sitting in a nondescript hotel conference room in Dallas, the clock ticking towards the biggest shoot of a documentary to be called The Perfect 10.
“Yesterday, we pre-lit everything,” Trout told Deadline. “Today was a full day of rehearsal.” If he was feeling pressure, he wasn’t letting on.
In the morning it would be game on: filming a group of football legends as they assembled for the first time—the only men to win a Heisman Trophy and be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Roger Staubach, and Charles Woodson, sitting down for a once-in-a-lifetime conversation as multiple cameras rolled.
“If you go by hardware, it really is the greatest collection of football talent at one place in one time,” Trout said. “It’s the coolest clubhouse in football history.

Ever since "Monday Night Football" ousted Hank Williams Jr. from the show's opening segment following some inappropriate comments, producers have crafted unique introductions to each game. Previous intros included a heartfelt montage featuring Barry Sanders when Mnf returned to Detroit for the first time in a long time. For the last Monday night game of the season, we were treated to a special holiday intro to the Saints-Falcons game featuring Betty White.
In what was titled "A White Christmas," the 89-year-old appeared in the opening segment and discussed how attractive the quarterbacks in the NFL are and explained what happened when she tried Tebowing.
"[Matt] Ryan's nickname is 'Matty Ice' because he's so cool," she said. "But I prefer 'Matty Steam' because he's so hot."
At the end of the intro, she just couldn't control her excitement, jumped out of her chair and screamed, "You can't stop the pain train! Woohoo!

Nashville, Tenn. — Hank Williams Jr. is about to have his say.
Williams' has cut a new song, "Keep the Change," calling out "Fox & Friends" and Espn after an interview last week on the Fox News talk show led to the end of his association with the sports network and "Monday Night Football," long home to his "Are you ready for some football?" theme.
"I've been recording for five decades, and I knew that old over-the-fence feeling on this one," Williams said in an interview Monday afternoon.
He's also scheduled to appear on "The View" and "Hannity" on Tuesday to discuss the uproar that sprung up after he made an analogy that President Barack Obama and House Speaker Rep. John Boehner golfing together was like Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu playing a round.

Ben Stiller hosted "Saturday Night Live" again - how do you think he did?
The opening monologue was a take-off on Willy Wonka, which was kinda funny. It was mostly predicated on Jewish jokes, so it really depended on if that's your thing.
There was a Fox News sketch about Occupy Wall Street that featured Jason Sudeikis as Hank Williams Jr., who was fired from Monday Night Football after comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler. Williams was replaced by Barry Sanders. That was kinda funny. Jason certainly did a good Hank.
There was also a Andy-Samberg-as-Hugh-Jackman talk show sketch that featured Ben Stiller as Mandy Patinkin. Hugh Jackman hilariously cameo'd as Daniel Radcliffe, which was kinda funny, but honestly, we were a little disappointed by "SNL" this week.
