Coming to theaters from IFC Films and Shudder on August 18th, we have a look at the new trailer and poster for Laura Moss' birth/rebirth, starring Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes!
"Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction. She also has an obsession — the reanimation of the dead. Celie (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse who has built her life around her bouncy, chatterbox six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister). When one tragic night, Lila suddenly falls ill and dies, the two women's worlds crash into each other. They embark on a dark path of no return where they will be forced to confront how far they are willing to go to protect what they hold most dear.
This standout directorial debut from Laura Moss reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic horror myth Frankenstein with such a contemporary understanding that it becomes something exciting,...

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Witches in the Woods, director Jordan Barker reflects on the challenges of filming in sub-zero temperatures and the time-bending ambitions of his next film…
Why did you respond so strongly to Christopher Borell’s script (originally titled Stranded) – because it mixed an age-old witch hunt tale with up-to-the-minute contemporary issues of sexual harassment?
Hi All and hope everyone is staying safe and sane during these very strange times. Borrelli’s script spoke to me on many levels. I felt it took a contemporary look at what it means to live in our post truth world; how our realities are shaped by the lens through by which we choose to observe. To me the film was summed up by nothing being more terrifying than being possessed, not necessarily by a vicious evil demon, but instead by an idea.

While multiplexes may not be opening any time soon, that doesn’t mean genre fans still don’t have other means to take in new horror films these days. Here’s a look at a pair of recent indie movies that I had the chance to check out: We Summon the Darkness from Marc Meyers (My Friend Dahmer) and Witches in the Woods by director Jordan Barker.
We Summon the Darkness: As someone who lived through the Satanic Panic of the ’80s and early ’90s, Marc Myers’ ode to heavy metal lifestyles, We Summon the Darkness, was 100 percent my jam. A brutal and surprising bloodbath that managed to subvert any expectations I had going into it, We Summon the Darkness may stumble a bit here and there tonally, but ultimately delivers a wickedly fun time all the same.
The story follows Alexis (Alexandra Daddario) and her two best pals,...

With a misleading trailer, a cool poster, and a title that capitalizes on the recent spate of witchcraft-associated horror hits but whose connection to the actual film is tenuous at best, many viewers are bound to be disappointed by Witches in the Woods, the latest from writer Christopher Borrelli (The Vatican Tapes) and director Jordan Barker (Torment).
I admittedly came away a little disillusioned myself, but upon further reflection I concluded that Witches in the Woods is a solid – albeit flawed – horror flick about deteriorating group dynamics when faced with the rising tension of being stranded in the cold and snowy wilderness.

I absolutely love films, in particular, horror films that have scenes that involve a lot of snow. Or, even better, if like Witches In The Woods, have a setting that is entirely snow-covered. Maybe it’s my love of Christmas and movies based around that holiday season or maybe it’s just how beautiful landscapes and nature look when covered with the white stuff. Or maybe it’s because when blood is sprayed or dripped on to snow, it looks really really cool. Whatever it is, I know I am going to enjoy a movie a little bit more if snow is featured heavily.

Director: Jordan Barker. Writers: Michael Foster and Thomas Pound. Cast: Peter DaCunha, Katharine Isabelle and Stephen McHattie. Torment is a film from production company Filmax International. This Spanish company shot and developed this slasher film in 2013. Shot in Canada, Torment is from a fairly new writing crew: Michael Foster and Thomas Pound. Also, this viewer knows director Jordan Barker from his work on the 2006 supernatural thriller The Marsh. And, both The Marsh and Torment are lackluster film events. Torment is overly dark through several scenes. As well, the killers in the film are underdeveloped and uninteresting to follow. Torment is one slasher film that does not stand-out in this crowded sub-genre. The story for Torment, such that it is, begins with the Morgan family. Liam (Peter DaCunha) and Sarah (Katharine Isabelle) are newlyweds and they decide to take their son and step-son out to the woods, for a nice retreat.

It was only a matter of time before Disney jumped into the horror game – Ok, kidding. No, that’s not a deformed Mickey Mouse standing in the fires of Hell, but instead one of the masked menaces found in Jordan Barker’s Torment. Blending elements of “torture porn” and slasher mainstays, this should-be nightmare does little to separate itself from the pack besides decapitating some larger-than-life stuffed animals so that the film’s villains can wear unique masks. All the major influences can be felt, from The Strangers to You’re Next, but writers Thomas Pound and Michael Foster fail to strike their own unique brand of Canadian terror. Maybe our neighbors to the North haven’t been overexposed to every genre trope in horror’s unwritten rulebook, but such normalcy doesn’t cut it around these parts without embellishments or aiding characteristics – especially when a script glosses over the most interesting dynamics available.

With a title like Torment, you're probably expecting some hyper-brutal, bad-ass combination of Saw, Hostel, and that one awesome French slasher flick you can't pronounce... but nope! Aside from a few cool moments of blood-soaked lunacy at the beginning and the end, director Jordan Barker is more interested in some psychological torment. Just a simple "home invasion" story with some pretty cool slasher flick DNA, Torment might be better off called Suspense. But that's not a title that would entice many horror freaks. Torment it is. Plot-wise, we've got several threads you probably now by now: A) A prologue in which a family is hacked up by a lunatic. B) A young family arrives at their old home to help get over a recent tragedy. C) After a small amount of legitimately decent character development, point A meets point B in a very unpleasant fashion. But what Torment lacks in...

Tagline: "Welcome to the Family." Filmax International is also developing the slasher film Torment. From director Jordan Barker (Duress), this film is still in production through Gearshift Films. Shooting is taking place in Canada and the film hosts a few Canadian actors. Stephen McHattie (The Tall Man), Katharine Isabelle (American Mary) and Robin Dunne (Cruel Intentions 2) are three participating Canadian actors. Isabelle can be seen in an early still for the film (below) and a strangely hooded killer is seen in the film's early poster (left). The film's story involves a couple, Sarah (Isabelle) and Cory (Dunne), out on holiday, with their young son. Though, someone or something has been staying in their old country house. Now, Liam (Peter DaCunha), the son, is missing. Both Sarah and Cory must fight for their lives against an entity, which has come straight from hell. Pre-production on this slasher film is likely...

Tagline: "What Would You Do to Save Your Child?" Screen Media Films is set to release Jordan Barker's (The Marsh) Duress this November, 2013. This film was completed in 2009. Also in 2009, Duress was screened at several film festivals, including Fantastic Fest '09. The film was shot in Greece and thriller fans can preview Duress, before the release, here. The film involves a single father, whose daughter is kidnapped. Richard (Martin Donovan) must turn vigilante, in order to find her. But, this kidnapper has done this before and his malicious ways will eventually lead to murder. Duress has received some notable reviews. Brian Salisbury of Film School Rejects enjoyed the thrilling aspects of this title: "This is a very cool little film. It is cold and haunting with an atmosphere of extreme dread." The tone is dark within this title. And, thriller fans can pick Duress up on DVD November 12th.

David Morlet (a.k.a. David Morley), who directed and co-wrote the undead-apocalypse film Mutants, scripted and helmed Home Sweet Home and was also one of the producers, along with Jordan Barker, who directed the 2007 ghost story The Marsh. “What’s really interesting is that this movie was actually born at the Berlin Film Festival at the Berlinale Market,” Barker tells Fango. “We decided that we wanted to make a feature together, and from script development to funding, production and post, this film came together in only about four or five months.”
Screen Media Films gave us the scoop that it has picked up U.S. rights to Home Sweet Home, with a release planned for the second quarter of 2013 (most likely June). Special features for the disc release are still to be finalized, but will likely include a director’s commentary, interviews and a still gallery (keep your eyes...

There are several quick stories coming out of Filmax today, and we've got them all in one neat place. Mainly because we didn't feel like writing a separate story for each. We're allowed to be a little lazy every now and again, too, ya know. Read on!

Media 8 Entertainment is taking the film Duress to the European Film Market, which begins in less than a week. Duress is a story about suicide and the protection of a young daughter. If that was not enough, Duress will also include a charismatic killer, who trains an unwilling protégé in his dark arts. The film is more thriller than horror, but the writing is new and with any luck the film will be picked up for North American distribution, for fans to enjoy. Have a look at the synopsis, which shows potential and a somewhat grainy trailer below.
The synopsis for Duress here:
"Haunted with nightmares of his wife's recent suicide and struggling to mend the relationship with his only daughter, Richard is caught as a witness to the violence of Abner Solvie. He finds himself at the mercy of a charismatic killer and plagued by his involvement in the city's recent murders.

Fantastic Fest in Austin is one of the best festivals in the country devoted to genre films. Previously, we brought you news about the first round of films scheduled to show during the fest. And now, there’s even more news to share today, including some great guests and some relly cool films we’re looking forward to seeing.
But really, I probably can’t do all this info proper justice (given my time constraints today at least) so I’ll just let Tim League, director/co-founder of the Fest, speak for himself via the latest Fest press release:
George Romero Returns to Fantastic Fest!

The second round of entries into the Fantastic Fest 2009 line-up have been released this morning. For out-of-towners, Fantastic Fest is Austin's premiere film festival and the largest genre film festival in the United States. Once a year, Alamo Drafthouse master of ceremonies Tim League brings the best horror, action, foreign and otherwise related gems to Austin for a week of fried food, good spirits and great movies at the world's greatest movie theater. And according to the line-up I just read through -- attached below -- this year should be no exception. League and crew will be bringing George Romero back to Austin for the U.S. Premiere of Survival of the Dead. As well, they will also host Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland and the latest film from Takashi Miike, the animeted Yatterman. I would urge you to check out the line-up below. But even more importantly, you should head over to FantasticFest.com...
