When The Original Pantry--a Los Angeles landmark diner that had been open continuously, 24 hours a day, since 1924--was in danger of closing down in 1981, Riordan bought it himself and kept it open (he was mayor of Los Angeles at the time). It is, as of this writing (2022) still in business.
