EastEnders star Gary Lucy has spoken out about the criticism the soap received about his character's on-screen kiss.
Lucy's character Danny Pennant shared a kiss with newcomer Johnny Carter (Sam Strike) over the festive season as part of a plot that saw the teenager eventually discuss his sexuality with his father Mick.
The episode received complaints from viewers but was defended by EastEnders writers Pete Lawson and Daran Little.
Speaking to The Sun about the complaints, Lucy said: "I think, 'Get with the times!'
"Reaction was, on the most part, positive. There were a few on Twitter still living in the dark ages but on the whole, people were okay.
"I got one message on the internet from a guy saying, 'Thanks for that storyline because it gave me the courage to come out and tell my parents'. If you can do that, you as an actor and the show has done its job.

A former 'The Only Way Is Essex' producer felt "contaminated" by the show's characters. Daran Little - who worked as a storyline editor on the ITV2 show - quit the programme after the first series because he didn't feel comfortable with the likes of Amy Childs, Lauren Goodger and Mark Wright's "incestuous lives". He said: "Isn't this the next evolution of 'Big Brother'? To film fame-hungry but seemingly talentless young people in their natural environment rather than in one big house? I needed persuading that the lives of the participants would be interesting enough. "I met them and felt contaminated by their incestuous...

TV writer Daran Little has defended structured reality shows like The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea, insisting that audiences clearly enjoy watching them. The Only Way is Essex shocked many in April when it took home the 'YouTube Audience Award' at this year's BAFTAs. However, Little said that he always knew viewers would take to the show. "I was surprised by the snobbery surrounding the triumph of The Only Way is Essex," he wrote in his column for the Radio Times. "I was asked if I felt it deserved its BAFTA in the viewers' choice category. I suppose the answer is in the question: it won, didn't it? "If fans want (more)...

The producers behind The Only Way Is Essex have admitted that they expect more structured reality shows to emerge. Speaking at last night's British Academy Television Awards, where The Only Way Is Essex scooped the Audience Award, Daran Little explained that he believes the genre will grow. "I was a series producer on that, I also story produce Made In Chelsea," he said. "I actually think structured reality is here to stay. It doesn't have to be highbrow, it's entertaining. If it's funny and it's good drama and people watch it, I think it's got a right to be [on television]." Little added: "I was a bit bemused to see [the cast] arrive in horse and carriages, but I think (more)...

Last night saw the launch of the new Towie rival reality show, Made in Chelsea.
Run by by soap and drama writing legend Daran Little, the show is based on a group of friends living in the elite Chelsea quarter, and is a combination of Gossip Girl and Hollyoaks.
As with any new reality show, this first episode shows some first time screen nerves, but on the whole is very exciting and promising.
Centred on one main character, Caggie, the show follows her and her lifestyle, with a love interest storyline evident from the start, with her childhood sweetheart, Spencer, who unfortunately has a girlfriend, Funda.
There are obviously similarities between Made in Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex as the age of the stars is the same and the ways they spend their time is similar, but this show is easier on the fake tan, the boob jobs and the eyes,...

Coronation Street creator Tony Warren reportedly planned to end the show after its initial 13 episodes in 1960. According to The Sun, Warren had suggested that Weatherfield could be destroyed in an explosion in its final episode. Daran Little, a former Corrie archivist and writer, revealed: "His vision was that, on the 13th episode, the street would blow up, or something like that, and it would end. "But after the fourth episode it was obvious how much people liked it. They didn't know how long it would carry on, but he couldn't write it all." He continued: (more)...

A new drama telling the story behind Coronation Street's screen debut is to air on BBC Four, it has been announced. The one-off programme, which is being produced to mark the soap's 50th anniversary year, will show how Tony Warren had to battle to get Corrie on the air after coming up with the idea for the serial. Warren, now 73, was working as a contract writer at Granada Television in Manchester when he was inspired to create Coronation Street. However, his bosses initially provided fierce opposition to his desire to secure an ITV slot for the soap. BBC Four's drama has been titled Florizel Street, which was Warren's original name for his creation. It will be penned by former Corrie writer Daran Little and have the show's current boss Kieran Roberts as its executive producer. Meanwhile, Warren (more)...
