James Tynion IV is headed to Dark Horse, with the comic book scribe launching a new line that will feature works previously published on Substack as well as new material from his Tiny Onion Studios.
Tynion turned heads a year ago when the acclaimed author moved to Substack after ending his Batman run at longtime home DC, where he opted not to re-up his exclusive deal but continues to write after becoming a name brand scribe. Since then, he has introduced a number of titles on the digital subscription platform that will now see print for the first time at Dark Horse.
Blue Book will launch in February 2023 and The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos will follow in June 2023.

Now that "The Sandman" has dropped its excellent bonus episode, fans are anxiously awaiting news of the show being picked up for a second season. Netflix has yet to make a decision unfortunately, but that hasn't stopped creator Neil Gaiman and showrunner Allan Heinberg from plotting season 2 and beyond. Both previously touched on which comic arcs they were most excited to tackle and Heinberg's in particular, were further down the line than even season 2 would likely get.
"The Sandman" bonus episode, which adapted "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope," introduces the titular Muse, but also reveals that not only were Dream (Tom Sturridge) and Calliope (Melissanthi Mahut) once married, but they also had a son together. Not much is said, though we know some tragedy befell him, resulting in a terrible falling out between his parents. The episode makes some incredibly smart changes, especially to Calliope's story, that really make this adaption sing.

This The Sandman review contains No Spoilers and is based on all 10 episodes of the first season of the show.
After decades of failed or blocked film adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Netflix has finally broken through with a new 10-episode series, released on Aug. 5.
And it was all worth the wait. The Sandman is spectacular.
The series, adapted for television by Allan Heinberg, David Goyer, and Gaiman himself, follows Dream of the Endless as he is captured by a human warlock and held in captivity for 100 years. He escapes captivity and returns to his realm, The Dreaming, to rebuild and reorient himself, and that process leads to personal growth and deeper relationships with his subjects and his siblings.

Prepare to start seeing Morpheus in your dreams, because "The Sandman" finally arrives on Friday. The Netflix show follows Dream of the Endless, who is the living embodiment of dreams and master of the Dreaming itself. Like most of us, his relationship with his family is complicated, especially since his siblings happen to be Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. The series is based on the seminal comic of the same name by Neil Gaiman and a host of incredible artists including Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Colleen Doran, Jill Thompson, and Marc Hempel, among many others.

It’s an odd thing: while actually reading a Beasts of Burden book, it’s entirely plausible – my disbelief is reasonably suspended. But both before and afterward

, in retrospect, it all seems silly and I struggle to write about it in a non-dismissive way.
If that tone sneaks in, I don’t really mean it. But there is something inherently goofy about the whole series, and I do have to acknowledge that.
As seen previously in the original Beasts of Burden (later subtitled “Animal Rites,” har de har har), and seen later in the follow-up series Wise Dogs and Eldrich Men , all animals can talk to each other and some animals have magical skills and abilities.
I don’t know if series creator Evan Dorkin meant it this way, but domesticated animals (dogs and cats so far) are on the side of Good, and wild animals are on...

It’s been a rough year for most of us, but in Geek Culture there have been plenty of bright spots. In the spirit of trumpeting some of the good stuff, here’s my Annual Holiday Gift Guide:
Holly Jolly: Celebrating Christmas Past In Pop Culture
Written by Mark Voger • TwoMorrows • 192 pp. • Hardcover, Full Color • Isbn-13: 978-1-60549-097-7 • $43.95
Every yuletide season I trot out my copy of The Battle For Christmas by Stephen Nissenbaum. For my money, that’s the best book out there to analyze and explain the many traditions that have shaped the way we celebrate Christmas. It’s clear to me that it’s time to make room on my coffee table this December for another impressive book. TwoMorrows newest, Holly Jolly is kind of the pop-culture counterpart to the Nissenbaum’s authoritative tome. I really enjoy Mark Voger’s writing. For example, I...

When The Sandman was initially published in 1989, Neil Gaiman‘s horror-fantasy comic series was praised as a groundbreaking piece of art, aided by the surreal and often unnerving illustrations by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Jill Thompson, Shawn McManus, Marc Hempel, and Michael Zulli. The story of the anthropomorphic personification of Dream as he returns to his realm after a decades-long […]

Billionaires deserve to be satirized more than anyone else in the universe, and that's exactly what Billionaire Island will do.
In a world where rich people think having money means you’re a genius, you get things like doomed, lawless, vanity campaigns for president, a strip-mined media landscape, and vampires. Fortunately, you also get the sharpest comedic team in recent comic book memory teed up to absolutely brutalize these dudes in a new series coming from Ahoy Comics.
Billionaire Island is a new series from Mark Russell and Steve Pugh, the pair who created the most unbelievably funny comic in years in The Flintstones. “Billionaire Island tells the story of Freedom Unlimited (Fu Island), a private island created and populated by billionaires hoping to wait out the end of the world,” said Russell. “But because they are in international waters and not subject to any law, their...

The worlds of Neil Gaiman and comics intertwine once more with Sandman Universe #1 from DC Comics! Large, sweeping landscapes and fever dreams abound in this series with artwork by a number of talented artists, with writing by Dan Watters, Kat Howard, Nalo Hopkinson, and Simon Spurrier. Also in today's Comics Corner: RoboCop: Citizens Arrest #5, B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know #9, Her Infernal Descent #4, Oblivion Song #6, and Black Torch Vol. 1.
*Recommendation* -- Sandman Universe #1: "From the mind of New York Times #1 bestselling author Neil Gaiman comes a new world filled with dreams, nightmares, and wonderful characters living together in a shared universe for a new story, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.
A rift between worlds has opened, revealing a space beyond the Dreaming. Meanwhile, a book from Lucien’s library is discovered by a group of children in the waking world where it should not exist.

As you might be able to tell from the year in the post title, I’ve gotten more than a little lackadaisical about keeping up with this annual series of the best in comics created by North Americans. (I reviewed 2006 at the beginning of 2007, 2007 later in 2007, 2008 in 2008, 2009 in 2009, 2010 in 2011 after the next book was published, 2011 in 2012, 2012 in 2013, 2014 in 2014, and have so far missed 2015, 2016, and 2017. If it were still my job to keep up with things being published, I would probably be deeply ashamed of myself — but it hasn’t been for a decade now, so I’m not.)
But I’m still interested in good comics, as always. So here I finally am with the Jeff Smith-edited The Best American Comics 2013 , only four and a half years after it was published and six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half years after the work in it originally appeared.

Presenting two real-life stories from my days of yore, although names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.
Story The First:
I knew a girl in high school – I wouldn’t say we were friends, but she was someone who had never participated in the Piggy horrors. Sally was an A+ student, on the track to an Ivy League school. Pretty (but not gorgeous) and popular (but quiet about it), she came to me one day and said that she needed to talk to me privately. I was surprised… and a bit suspicious. What did she want? But because Sally had never been overtly mean to me, even though she was part of the clique that instigated most of the callous cruelties upon me, and because I still hoped to be “accepted,” and I wanted to believe for some reason she was about to warn me...

The first panel at New York Comic Con’s main stage on Friday, October 9 marked the triumphant return of an old favorite as DC Comics editors and creators gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns. They also previewed the upcoming The Dark Knight 3: The Master Race. This miniseries is co-written by original Dark Knight creator Frank Miller and seasoned comics veteran Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets) with pencils from Andy Kubert (Flashpoint) and inks from the legendary Klaus Janson (Daredevil). All of these creators were present at the panel with Miller making a surprise entrance in his trademark fedora to thunderous applause. They were joined by DC editor and moderator Brian Cunningham and publisher Jim Lee, who worked with Miller on the controversial All-Star Batman and Robin.
Cunningham opened the panel by giving the history of The Dark Knight Returns, and how it deconstructed superhero mythology while also pioneering storytelling techniques,...

Artist/writer Jill Thompson has one of the most idiosyncratic bodies of work in contemporary comics ranging from important arcs on legendary comics series The Sandman and The Invisibles to more traditional superhero work like a run on Wonder Woman as well her own creator owned comic/children’s book/film series Scary Godmother. She has drawn everything from dying stripper gods to Romantic poets, Batman to Bart Simpson and even an all animal cast in her Eisner winning Dark Horse series Beasts of Burden with writer Evan Dorkin. She is also one of the few creators not named Neil Gaiman allowed to write The Endless in her Li’l Endless and Death stories.
But before she was winning awards and one of DC/Vertigo’s rising stars, Jill Thompson was a graduate of American Academy of Art in Chicago and doing art for several of the (now defunct) indie publishers of the late 1980s.

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. Even though she was never a writer or artist, Karen Berger is one of the most influential people in comics. She has won three Eisner Awards for Best Editor and singlehandedly created the Vertigo imprint for DC Comics while recruiting some of comics’ greatest talents to work for DC (Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman). By the end of the 1980s, the books she edited (Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, The Sandman, Shade, the Changing Man, Animal Man) became the “Berger-verse”, whicheventually turned into the Vertigo imprint. Existing on the edges of the DC Universe and later becoming mainly creator owned books, Vertigo was a place where talented creators had relative freedom to create comics of any genre from horror (Hellblazer), fantasy (Books of Magic), crime (100 Bullets), modern day fairy tales (Fables), or even books that transcend genre boundaries, like Sandman, The Invisibles, or Preacher. During her 20 year tenure as executive editor of Vertigo,...

Shane Acker, the director of the CG animated action film 9, is set to direct a new untitled CG animated movie based on the Dark Horse Comics series Beasts of Burden, which was written by Evan Dorkin and illustrated by Jill Thompson. It's a supernatural story that revolves around dogs.
Even though 9 was a little rough around the edges I still enjoyed the movie, and I've been looking forward to seeing what Acker would end up doing next because he's a pretty talented guy. This seems like a solid project for him to take on, and I hope it turns out to be a good flick. The movie is being produced by Reel FX, and the script is being worked on by Darren Lemke (Turbo, Shrek Forever After).

It's been more than three years since Shane Acker's directorial debut, the animated film 9, arrived in theaters, but finally the filmmaker has found his next project. Reel FX has hired Acker to helm Beasts of Burden, a brand new animated film that will be based on the Dark Horse comic series by Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson. The story in the film is set in a small town called Burden Hill where all kinds of supernatural strangeness regularly occurs. The protectors of the town and its inhabitants are a group of five dogs named Ace, Rex, Jack, Whitey, and Pugsley as well as a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, which was first released in August 2003. Variety, which reported the news of Acker's hiring, says that writer Darren Lemke (Jack The Giant Slayer, Shrek Forever After) will be handling screenwriting duties,...

Good news for fans of Shane Acker, director of the acclaimed animated film 9 from a few years back, he's lined up another animation project. Deadline/Variety report that Reel FX Creative Studios (of Open Season 2 & 3, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Turkeys) has signed on Shane Acker to direct their new CG animated feature Beasts Of Burden, based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name. The comics are about a team of investigative animals — five dogs and a cat named Orphan. Ever since first seeing 9 I've been keeping a close watch on Acker, who has lined up a few projects, none of which have hit the screen yet. Beasts of Burden is a Dark Horse Comics team of animals, created by writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson, that investigate different paranormal events that occur in their small neighborhood of Burden Hill. The screenplay for the big screen...

Shane Acker is returning to the realm of animated film. The "9" director will next tackle the CG animated feature "Beasts of Burden," based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name.
Reel FX announced the partnership, and says that "Turbo" scribe Darren Lemke is writing the script for the movie. Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson wrote the comic books, which tell the story of a group of animals that look into various paranormal events that happen in their Burden Hill neighborhood. Sounds like a story that's right up Acker's alley.
The central characters of "Beasts of Burden" are five dogs named Whitey, Jack, Red, Ace and Pugsley and a cat named Orphan. The characters first appeared in 2003 in "The Dark Horse Book of Haunting," and have had their own standalone graphic novels since.

Though it was picked up back in 2011 for Shrek/Narnia man Andrew Adamson to produce via his company, the adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ tale Beasts Of Burden has faced a typically slow slog through development. Things are looking a little more hopeful now, however, as 9 director Shane Acker is now on board to direct the movie.Created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson for Dark Horse’s Book Of Hauntings, Witchcraft, The Dead And Monsters, the story takes place in the small community of Burden Hill, wracked with supernatural weirdness.Things get so strange that a group of dogs and a cat band together to investigate what’s happening, in order to keep their human friends safe and, presumably, to pee on a ghost or two. Jack The Giant Killer’s Darren Lemke is currently at work on the film version, which doesn’t have a name for now.

Last year’s graphic novel and Tpb Top 10, was filled with some modern classics including Parker: The Outfit, Northlanders, Scott Pilgrim, and Beasts of Burden, so 2011’s offerings have a lot to live up to. Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá can do no wrong, and Daytripper is their best and most personal work to date. Daytripper is one of the most poignant comics I have ever read, chapter 8 especially, which is odd as Brás is absent for that story. I look forward to seeing how Moon & Bá follow this. Earlier this month, we were psyched to bring you the news that the award-winning Dark Horse Comics series "Beast Of Burden" was being made into a CG-animated feature.Things seems to have been moving right along since then, as the studio has found a screenwriter for the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Jack The Giant Killer" writer Darren Lemke will pen the screenplay for "Beasts Of Burden," which follows a group of animals in the fictional community of Burden Hill who fight supernatural threats. The Eisner-winning comic book — which we recommended for adaptation all the way back in September 2009 — was created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson.
While this is Lemke's first foray into comic book properties, he's been on the peripheral of comics and animated fare a few times now.
Lemke penned the script for "Jack The Giant Killer," which is currently in production under "X-Men" and "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer.
