Growing more impressive by the day, the cast for Edgar Wright’s Paramount pic The Running Man has added William H. Macy (Shameless) to its ranks.
Details as to Macy’s role are under wraps. He joins an ensemble led by Glen Powell, which will also include Josh Brolin, Karl Glusman, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, Lee Pace, Jayme Lawson, Michael Cera and Emilia Jones.
Based on the classic Stephen King novel written under pen name Richard Bachman, The Running Man is set in an oppressive future where the government controls the media. The story follows Ben Richards (Powell) as he volunteers to participate in a deadly game show, which will see him hunted by professional killers over the course of 30 days. Should he survive, he’ll win a cash prize that will help save his sick child and lift his family out of a horrid living situation.

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.

Apes together strong indeed! After earning close to $400 million bananas with the Wes Ball-directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, news about another movie in the evolutionary franchise is swinging our way! According to 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell, another Apes film is in the works for a 2027 release. Details about the project are scarce. However, it’s a fair assumption to think it’s a sequel to Ball’s box-office blockbuster, starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, William H. Macy, and more.
Whispers about a new Planet of the Apes movie arrive alongside confirmation that 20th Century Studios is developing more Alien and Predator films. We already know Predator Badlands will be unleashed on November 7, 2025. However, Asbell says we’re getting two additions to the Predator franchise in 2025. Director Wes Ball refers to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the latest installment in the re-energized franchise, as something of a “soft reboot.” As a fan of both the original 1968 film with Charlton Heston as well as the more recent trilogy helmed by Matt Reeves, Ball was careful to hold on to the goodwill that this story already possessed. His approach then was to start a new chapter in an unexplored time period of this apocalyptic story. “I started thinking about it as, is there a way to almost bridge those two worlds together where you could start that step,” he explains, “that march towards that Charlton Heston reality.” Watch the video interview above.
“Kingdom” is set some 300 years after the death of ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” The primates have developed a full spoken language, robust cultures, and Caesar is simply a legend.

The Best Visual Effects Oscar race has turned into a potential Wētā FX simian battle between “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (20th Century Studios) and “Better Man” (Paramount), the Robbie Williams musical biopic, in which the British pop star is portrayed as a CG chimp. Performance capture is one of the most exciting new tools available to filmmakers this century. But, if you’re an up and coming cinematic storyteller, how can you use it in your own filmmaking? IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit, taking place in Los Angeles on November 2 has you covered.
We are honored to welcome the team behind this year’s blockbuster smash, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” for a dynamic panel about the ins-and-outs of performance capture. At the heart of the conversation will be how they used these innovative tools to elicit profound emotion, to create deep connections between the film’s characters and the audience. Roger Ebert always said movies are an empathy machine: The performance capture artistry in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” showed how true that is.

M. Night Shyamalan is far from being a unanimous name within the industry, both on the side of studios that choose whether or not to invest in the filmmaker, and among audiences who find themselves either pleasantly surprised or disappointed by his often divisive films. That said, it’s hard to deny his impact on capturing viewers’ attention, even when he only serves as a producer, as is the case with Caddo Lake, written and directed by the duo Celine Held and Logan George (Topside). With an attractive cast led by Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), expectations rose even higher with the narrative premise.
Caddo Lake focuses on the mysterious vanishing of an 8-year-old girl and her connection to a series of other past disappearances and interlinked deaths, forever altering the story of a broken family. Part thriller, part mystery, part sci-fi, part family drama…...

Universal Pictures and Sega Corporation are teaming up on a feature film adaptation of the video game franchise “Shinobi,” the companies announced on Tuesday. Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s “Extraction” films, is attached to direct the “Shinobi” movie from a screenplay by Ken Kobayashi (“Sunny”).
The “Shinobi” series first debuted in 1987 as an arcade game and follows protagonist Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. The franchise spans 14 games, including spinoffs, and ports, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide. A new entry in the series was revealed in late 2023.
The film comes on the heels of Universal’s video game adaptation success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office, and hit “Five Nights at Freddy’s” which made $290 million on a budget of just $20 million. Universal is also developing an adaptation of the video game “Ruiner” with “Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball.

It’s What’s Inside filmmaker Greg Jardin spent eight years trying to land $10 million for a still-unproduced sci-fi comedy. In 2016, he then pivoted to a genre-bending idea that is now his feature directorial debut, spending another eight years trying to get it in front of a festival audience. That opportunity finally came at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, and within three days of It’s What’s Inside’s world premiere, Jardin and his producing team landed a $17 million acquisition deal from Netflix.
Jardin — who’s had a healthy career making shorts, music videos and promos for Netflix projects such as Wednesday and When They See Us — had modest expectations for his comedic sci-fi thriller leading up to Sundance. In fact, his only concern was that his $2.5 million film didn’t create a loss for his financing and producing partners at Such. “Fortnite” creator Epic Games kicked off its Unreal Fest event Tuesday with the debut of Unreal Engine 5.5 and previews for new features of the massively popular video-game-building tool. Used to produce not only Aaa game titles, but also big-budget VFX-heavy shows like “The Mandalorian” and Tim Miller’s upcoming Amazon animated video game-focused anthology TV series “Secret Level,” Unreal Engine is Epic’s pride and joy and the service is adding more features to make it an attractive production tool for Hollywood.
Top of mind for Epic today was Unreal’s new experimental “MegaLights,” which “enables you to use orders of magnitude more lights than ever before—all movable, dynamic, with realistic area shadows and the ability to light volumetric fog.

Producer and director Wes Ball addressed the possibility of a Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel.
Following the 2010s Planet of the Apes trilogy, Kingdom relaunched the franchise, taking place many generations after the death of the franchise's previous main character, Caesar.
After earning $397.3 million at the global box office, some believe this was enough to greenlight two more films to complete a trilogy under Ball's tutelage. This should not be too surprising as Ball confirmed with The Direct that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes cost "less" than the previous three films.

What do young adult novel adaptations, post-apocalyptic movies, and films involving shadowy corporations messing around unscrupulously have in common? For one thing, they're all a dime a dozen. For another, they're all aspects of the trilogy of films adapted from "The Maze Runner," a series of novels by author James Dashner.
Like so much YA fiction from the '00s, Dasher's novels gained a passionately loyal fan following, leading to 20th Century Fox becoming interested in developing them for the big screen in the hope that the studio would have its very own "Hunger Games." The parallels between both franchises are certainly there on the surface: preteen-to-older-teen heroes being forced to participate in deadly encounters while fighting the scourge of authoritarianism. However, where "Hunger Games" and its films are far more politically and philosophically-minded, "The Maze Runner" goes in a much more genre flick direction. It's one of the...

New Planet of the Apes Trilogy Could Move Forward According to Report - Main Image
While sci-fi franchises like Star Trek may be dormant at the box office right now, properties like Alien have had great runs at the box office—good news for 20th Century Studios looking to make more out of their established IP.
One other franchise that managed to overperform at the box office this year was The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and it’s very likely that moviegoers are going to be seeing more CG monkeys on the big screen moving forward.
New Planet of the Apes Trilogy Confirmed?
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the latest Apes movie was said to have been a ‘crucial’ test for the Disney-Fox merger, and it managed to pass with flying colors, having grossed $400 million at the worldwide box office. This was apparently ‘enough to fulfill filmmaker...

"It's ridiculous, frankly, that a studio head, Emma Watts of Fox at the time, saw my little animated short, which was really all I had done and said, 'Here is $24 million, go make a movie.'" Those are the words of director Wes Ball speaking with DiscussingFilm in 2020. The movie in question is 2014's "The Maze Runner." While the final budget was closer to $34 million, the astonishing point remains the same. Yes, Ball getting to direct the film based on the strength of his short "Ruin" is surprising. Far more surprising? That he made a straight-up YA blockbuster for less than half what it cost to make "The Hunger Games."
Historical context is important here. In 2012, "The Hunger Games" hit it big pulling in $678 million worldwide,...

Franchises are both the lifeblood and bane of Hollywood’s existence. When everything clicks, a series can keep consumers intrigued for years if not decades — James Bond, Batman, Star Wars, Mission: Impossible, Superman. But sooner or later, fatigue sets in and the complaints begin (i.e., what happened to originality?)
The 2024 summer box office was a rare exception. For the first time in recent memory, “franchise” no longer was a dirty word, says one top studio executive. Those big brands helped push year-to-date domestic grosses to more than $5.4 billion as of the weekend of Sept. 6-8, which is still down about 13 percent compared with a year earlier but better than expectations for this point in 2024.
The reversal in fortune began after a rough May that saw The Fall Guy, a potential franchise newbie, spin out at the box office, followed by the blowout of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ($172 million...

The popular videogame Ruiner is the latest title to get turned into a film, with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes' Wes Ball directing.
There’s little doubt that videogame to film adaptations are back on the Hollywood radar. Sony has created a whole division of its film studio to adapting its popular library of PlayStation games – both past and present – into big, crowd-pleasing movies. Elsewhere, Nintendo saw huge success last year with the release of The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Even Sega is getting in on the act: a report surfaced the other day that the former giant of the games industry was looking to grab yet another 1990s title, Eternal Champions, and turn it into a film. The company is also looking to make a Golden Axe animated series, and hopes to make other games based on its old IPs following the success of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies.

Skydance has closed a deal with screenwriter Derek Connolly to adapt Sega’s “Eternal Champions” video game series into a feature film, the company announced on Friday.
Originally released in 1993, “Eternal Champions” is a fighting game made for the Sega Genesis console. The game’s story follows an omniscient being known as the Eternal Champion who, in order to change the fate of a world on the brink of collapse, gathers the dead souls of individuals otherwise destined for greatness from different eras in history and pits them against each other in a fighting tournament. Those who lose remain in death, while the last survivor gets to regain their life, in hopes of bringing balance back to the universe.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce for Skydance. Toru Nakahara will produce for Sega. Rob Ree, who brought Skydance and Sega together, is executive producing. Aimee Rivera will oversee the project for Skydance.

Update: Release date has moved from 9th September to 30th September, and this article has been updated accordingly.
Littered amidst a collection of box office misfires in cinemas this summer, Disney and 20th Century Studios’ continuation of the Planet Of The Apes saga with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes turned into a tidy success. Reviews were a little mixed for the new film, but in terms of hard cash, it’s grossed nearly $400m worldwide. I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. Has there ever really been a lousy Planet of the Apes movie? Not really. Yet, it’s often unheralded when we talk about the great franchises. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the heroes are exiled to The Void, a wasteland where forgotten characters of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel films wander. The studio’s iconic logo lies decrepit and half-buried, a tombstone for a history of superhero films that came to an end with “The New Mutants,” released to poor reviews in 2020, a year after Disney’s 2019 acquisition of Fox.
The resurrection of that spandex-wearing menagerie of IP has led “Deadpool & Wolverine” to a $438 million global opening weekend, the largest the box office has seen since “Avatar: The Way of Water” at the end of 2022. Its $211 million domestic haul stands as the highest ever for an R-rated film, and after passing $500 million in less than a week, it’s in line to join “Joker” as only the second film with that rating to gross $1 billion globally.

The start of the summer blockbuster season was a real ape-fest. Within a matter of weeks, there was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the long-awaited Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, and Dev Patel’s Monkey Man. And the ape-iest of the lot was Kingdom, fast-forwarding 300 years on from the end of the Caesar trilogy to spin a whole new apes-together-strong saga, sending young Noa (Owen Teague) out of his sheltered home and into a world of overgrown ruins, hardscrabble humans, and simian despots. The film was a solid hit in cinemas amid a tricky time for ticket sales, earning just shy of $400 million worldwide, and now we know exactly when it’ll be available to all on Disney+.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” from director Wes Ball, will hit Hulu in the U.S. on Aug. 2. The fourth chapter in the “Apes” reboot franchise from 20th Century Studios is set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign.
In the movie, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species — and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape named Noa undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. The cast of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” includes Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy and Peter Macon.

20th Century Studios gave the Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (read our review Here), a digital release earlier this month, and the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for August 27th – but before we get there, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will begin streaming on the Hulu service as of August 2nd! All nine prior films in the series are also streaming on Hulu, so fans will have the chance to binge-watch the entire Planet of the Apes franchise there!
The story of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set many years after the conclusion of War for the Planet of the Apes. Many apes societies have grown from when the Moses-like Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence.

"We love Apes movies, let's be happy we have another cool Apes movie to watch." He's so right about this! One of the best sci-fi movies of 2024 is the latest take on the Planet of the Apes franchise - titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Directed by sci-fi filmmaker Wes Ball, the movie opened in theaters in May and ended up becoming a massive box office hit over the past few months. I've actually been following Wes Ball's filmmaking career for over a decade - we posted his acclaimed VFX short film Ruin back in 2012 when it first launched. That became a viral hit, then he got the gig to direct The Maze Runner movie, which ended up becoming The Maze Runner trilogy. Video game fans can be quite controversial if they decide to do so. They are often avid collectors and passionate about defending something they love. In this case, a Zelda fan was sentenced to 4 months in prison in the United Kingdom after a police officer found him with a real replica of the famous Master Sword.
This fan’s replica, sharp and ready to use at any moment, was in his possession. He defended himself by saying that he only carried it because he really liked the saga from which the sword came; also, this replica was only 6 inches long.
