The romance of monkeys in tin cans continues to elude me. It was one of my pet peeves back when I was working at the Sfbc — an endless stream of stories, all by men (it was always men) who imprinted on an Apollo launch early, with another piece of special pleading about how Man was Destined to Go To The Stars because it was His Destiny Goshdarnit and We Can’t Put All Our Eggs In One Basket and The Frontier Breeds Real Men and Man Must Go Ever Onward and similar piffle.
I thought I’d left that all behind a decade ago when I was cast out of paradise lost my Sf job, and that was one of the few bright spots of the transition. [1]
But I still read Sf, some of the time. And those same guys — mostly my generation, more’s the pity, so I can...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is coming back for the twelfth season in its comic book form and fans will be happy to hear that creator Joss Whedon will be returning as well.
Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12: The Reckoning will be the latest installment of the Buffyverse comic series and Whedon will co-write it with longtime Buffy writer Christos Gage. As much as I would have loved to see the TV series keep going, I have enjoyed the comic books that followed and I couldn't be happier that Whedon will be back to move the story forward. This will be the first time Whedon has worked on Buffy since Season 9 in 2011. Artist Georges Jeanty is also set to return to illustrate the upcoming adventures.
Thanks to Cbr we have the art above and the following story details which reveal the return of Angel and Faith:

Condemned director Eli Morgan Gesner spoke with Daily Dead about the film and the Q&A is featured after the jump. Also in this round-up: preview pages from Dark Horse's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Vol. 3 hardcover comic and a cool monster creator website from the team behind 20th Century Fox's Victor Frankenstein.
Condemned: "Fed up with her parents’ bickering, poor-little-rich-girl Maya (Dylan Penn) moves in with her boyfriend, who is squatting in an old condemned building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With neighbors that are meth heads, junkies and degenerates, this depraved hell hole is even more toxic than it appears: After a virus born from their combined noxious waste and garbage infects the building’s residents, one by one, they succumb to a terrifying pathogen that turns them into bloodthirsty, rampaging killers and transforms their building into a savage slaughterhouse.

Batwoman Annual #2

Colors by Guy Major
Published by DC Comics
Alright, so as Convergence kicks up, a number of DC’s titles are being cancelled. One of those titles is Batwoman. To be honest this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Batwoman has been the center of multiple controversies and it hasn’t had the most spectacular of sales. It’s a downer given it means that one of DC’s few gay and female fronted titles is getting thrown out but it’s probably time. Hopefully in a year or two they’ll be able to bring her back in her own outing again with proper foresight to iron out the awkward details that have crippled this title.

After over three years in publication, Batwoman’s ongoing series comes to an end. There is to be an annual set to release at the start of April, but #40 marks the end of Batwoman’s monthly instalments. To tell the truth, it’s quite miraculous that a title coming from the big two headlining a gay female lead has lasted this long. Then again chances are association to a certain more famous superhero helped keep this book stay afloat, sorry but it tends to be true. One of the greatest problems Batwoman has faced is the numerous controversies surrounding her book. There was the infamous marriage cancellation which caused the creative team of J. H. Williams III and Haden Blackman to walk out, prompting the series to...

Batwoman #36
Written by Marc Andreyko
Pencils by George Jeanty Inks by Karl Story
Last month, Batwoman saw Kate Kane working alongside the likes of Red Alice, Clayface, Ragman, and Etrigan the Demon in space while fighting the forces of Hell and Morgan le Fey. It served as a proper introduction to Batwoman’s new occult themed team: the Unknowns. Now the series jumps back to explain the hows and whys of last issue. This month manages to perfectly balance both the oncoming mystical madness and the fallout from the last year or so of story lines.
As the status quo stands, Kate Kane has been unwittingly made a vampiress by her current girlfriend Natalia Knight. She’s been experiencing blackouts when her newfound blood lust flares up, and in this issue, nearly has her chow down on a pair of graffiti artists. A mystery begins when a shady cult performs...

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #6
Written by Zack Whedon
Pencilled by Georges Jeanty
Inked by Karl Story
Colors by Laura Martin
Published by Dark Horse Comics
For lack of a better term, Serenity #6 is a comfort food for a Firefly fan. It is full of snarky dialogue, a pack of underdogs saving the day once again, aerial maneuvers, gun battles, and most of all, the crew of Serenity coming together as a family. Zack Whedon continues to have a deft handle on all the main cast members’ voices while also developing the newcomers Bea, the leader of the New Resistance and Iris, who was trained by the Alliance to be an assassin like River. For the most part, Whedon doesn’t put many plot twists in this comic, but opts to cement old relationships between characters. Penciller Georges Jeanty does little things like insert a panel of Mal and Zoe...

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #4
Written by Zack Whedon
Pencilled by Georges Jeanty
Inked by Karl Story
Colors by Laura Martin
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #4 is a better paced comic than the previous issue in the miniseries. Writer Zack Whedon manages to include the planning and execution of Mal and the Operative’s plan to rescue River’s fellow Academy members into twenty-four pages of story while also filling the comic with the character interactions that made Firefly such an endearing television show. The Operative’s involvement in Mal’s rescue plan isn’t met with silence. Each crew member of Serenity gets a little conversation about him, and artist Georges Jeanty does a good job showing the various characters’ reactions and feelings about his arrival. His art is detailed in Serenity #4 with little touches that evoke the show Firefly or foreshadow ominous things for our big damn heroes.

Do you long for the more innocent days when Adam West and Burt Ward raced across your television in Technicolor glory battling the charismatic villains of Gotham City? When you think of the Joker, does a Latino actor who refused to shave his mustache come to mind before Heath Ledger or Jack Nicholson? Do you constantly find yourself wondering where the "Pow's" and the "Bam's" are as you sit through the Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan Dark Knight films? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then Batman '66 Volume 1 is tailor-made for you!
DC Comics releases the first five print issues of Batman '66 for fans of the psychedelic and campy romp we all grew up with. I specifically remember watching the series at my babysitter's house after school every chance I could get. If you prefer your Caped Crusader a little less gloomy and a little more fun,...

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #3

Pencilled by Georges Jeanty

Sometimes Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #3 is very good. Artist Georges Jeanty has an impressive handle on the interior of Serenity, which is detailed and has all the nooks and crannies of the ship in the show. He, inker Karl Story, and colorist Laura Martin also illustrate a mindblowing opening sequence that takes place inside River Tam’s troubled mind. There are also little call-backs to the show that Zack Whedon inserts in his script that will make any Firefly fan smile. However, it seems that half of the comic is retelling “Objects in Space” without the philosophical elements and dark humor. Also, the reason for the change in Mal and Inara’s relationship is barely touched on. How was their sexual tension resolved?...

Published by Dark Horse Comics
The Serenity Leaves on the Wind miniseries isn’t new reader friendly, but it is a great place for fans of the Firefly TV series and Serenity film to reconnect with their favorite characters and ship. Zack Whedon has a solid handle on the various characters’ voices and even introduces some of the moral dilemmas that made Firefly such an engaging show. In Serenity #2, Whedon explores different character’s relationships, like Mal and Zoe and Simon and River, while progressing the main plot of the crew of Serenity trying to heal Zoe as the New Resistance movement and Alliance look for them. Sometimes Georges Jeanty’s figures sometimes don’t look like the characters in the show, but he uses close-up panels to capture the characters’ emotions without dialogue.

Based on the Television Series Created by Joss Whedon
Published by Dark Horse Comics
There are only two known truths in the entire universe: 1, that a series created by Joss Whedon will more than likely suffer cancellation (or get shot down before it’s even made!), and 2, that the cancelled series will live on to some degree in comics. With the live-action adventures of Buffy and Angel most certainly dead, their transition to comics to tell the later instalments was only a logical move by Whedon. Firefly/Serenity was a different situation altogether. Axed after less than one full season, Joss was able to bring back the crew for one more adventure, this one released in cinemas. Other than the dismal box office reception of Serenity,...

I’ve already received e-mails about this. Encouraging me to go nuclear on DC Comics’ for hiring Orson Scott Card to write a story for the new Adventures of Superman digital comic, as reported by IGN.
The first two chapters are by Orson Scott Card, Aaron Johnston, Chris Sprouse and Karl Story, the third by Jeff Parker and Chris Samnee; teling of Superman’s first meeting with Lex Luthor. Future chapters include work by Dan Abnett. Ed Benes, Mitch Breitweise, Giuseppe Camuncol, Nathan Edmondso, Joshua Hale Fialkov, Christos N. Gage, Marc Guggenheim, Justin Jordan, Matt Kindt, Jt Krul , Max Landis, Andy Lanning, David Lapham, Jeff Lemire, Michael Avon Oeming, Riley Rossmo, Stephen Segovia, Bruce Timm, Marcus To and Marv Wolfman.
But Orson Scott Card is on the board of directors for National Organization for Marriage, an association committed to stopping the legalisation of gay marraige. And as a result of this,...

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Once again, a look into the future, with some very interesting looks at the past, including the reprinting of a comic that was never released in America in the first place, the infamous Elseworlds 80 Page Giant that was pulped because of concerns about Superman’s babysitter.

DC Comics' "Zatanna: Mistress Of Magic", available March 9, 2011, is written by Paul Dini with illustrations by Stephane Roux, Karl Story, Chad Hardin and Wayne Faucher, with a cover by Roux:
"...'Zatanna' has long made her home in San Francisco, but right under her nose a sinister threat has developed: a crime boss who dominates the criminal underworld with dark magic. The terrifying 'Brother Night' is making his play for the City by the Bay, and the police force – including detective 'Dale Colton' – turn to 'Zee' for help. But Brother Night is a whole new kind of criminal, and if Zatanna thinks she can backwards-talk him down, then she's in over her top-hatted head..."

Today I found out that Shakira — she of the big booty, funny voice, and nonsensical English lyrics — did a quite rubbish, dance cover of the moody, minimalist “Islands” by The xx but renamed it “Explore.” Now, I have no problem with covers, but goddamn, that song’s less than a year old, and Shakira is much richer than The xx. Can’t she pay some wannabe Bacharach to pen a club hit for her? It’s the same as Rod Stewart covering Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train” four years after the original — that’s not covering, that’s Pillaging.
So welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and yes I know that record labels pay money to the originators to record cover songs but that doesn’t make it less terrible.
