The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition has finally come to Blu-Ray, and in true "My Precious" fashion, this is the collection to own. For those who have already seen the extended editions of the films, you know that they add a new level to the already incredible series. For those who haven't, put together you're adding two additional hours of runtime. That's a pretty significant bonus right there, and that time includes some key moments from the trilogy that many fans were looking for.
The 15-Disc set includes more than 26 hours of bonuses, including four commentary tracks for each film (Director & Writers, Design Team, Production & Post-Production, and Cast), and the truly incredible Costa Botes behind-the-scenes documentaries. These are no ordinary behind-the-scenes features, and cover every aspect of the process with amazing footage.
Each film comes with five discs, two Blu-Rays of the film, and three standard discs filled with bonus features.

Perhaps the greatest film trilogy of all time, Peter Jackson’s complete Lord of the Rings saga, his adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth odyssey, finally gets the Extended Edition Blu-ray upgrade from next month.
Released on June 27th, this is the only Lotr Blu set you need as it contains the best versions of all three films and expands on back-stories, adds more meat on the bones and of course gives Christopher Lee’s Saruman a much needed finale. I haven’t watched the theatrical discs in years, the extended is the only way I would ever consider going.
We have teamed up with Entertainment Film Distributors to give away Two of these gorgeous Blu-ray sets that will retail at £54.99 next month and which I pre-ordered myself the first day it was announced. I expect to watch the whole 15 discs, containing the 10 hour+ film trilogy and the 25 hours of...

We won’t have to wait too long for The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions to hit Blu-ray afterall. Although Amazon earlier said they would be available in 2011 or 2012,” Warner Home Video has set their release for June 28.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
As we reported earlier this month, the extended versions of Peter Jackson’s three Oscar-winning films based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien will come to high-definition Blu-ray only in a The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition set. It will contain 15 discs with the fantasy movies plus more than 26 hours of special features. The movies will be on Blu-ray, but many of the special features will be in standard-definition DVD, so they’re probably the same discs out of the Extended Edition DVD sets.
The supplements package will include all the original featurettes created by Michael Pellerin,...

Last week, Warner Home Video released the theatrical cut of the Lord of the Rings films on Blu-ray, prompting speculation about the differences between the new release and previous ones, and invoking fanboy frustration at the absence of the Extended Editions in a high-definition format. (Click here to check out my review here on Cinematical.) Subsequently, I spoke to both Rings effects guru Richard Taylor and DVD and Blu-ray producer Michael Pellerin, each of whom offered opinions and insights into the process of upgrading the films and fleshing out their already-substantial spate of bonus content. And while Taylor's considerable expertise on Lord of the Rings unfortunately didn't extend to the home-video iterations of the films, Pellerin provided some new and specific information about both this Blu-ray release, and potential future ones, that will no doubt have fans of the franchise buzzing with excitement.

Yesterday in conjunction with the release of Warner Brothers’ new Blu-rays, Hollywood News published an exclusive interview with Richard Taylor, one of the good folks at effects house Weta who was responsible for helping bring the Lord of the Rings film to the screen. While Taylor provided as much information as he could, he confessed outright that he actually had nothing to do with the high-definition upgrade, and further, hadn’t even seen the discs yet. Subsequently, however, we spoke with one of the DVD/Bd project’s actual participants, longtime Peter Jackson collaborator Michael Pellerin, who provided some real insights into the process of bringing the films to Blu-ray for the first time.
In addition to his work with Jackson on documenting The Lord of the Rings films, the producer and director has worked on countless featurettes and bonus materials for other films as well, including Tron and Fantasia for Disney.
