I know it doesn’t feel like 2004 was 20 years ago, but it was, which means many great TV shows just turned 20 years old.

Seriously, 2004 is a sneaky good year for new TV premieres. Most of the titles on this list of good TV shows turning 20 years old in 2024 were broadcast hits. The cable networks had a decent market share in the early 2000s, but we’re still a decade before the streaming industry changed the TV game.

At this point in TV history, we’re still seven years before the Game of Thrones premiere. Remember that, please!

After premiering in the U.S. Narrative Competition at Tribeca Film Festival in 2023, the H.P. Mendoza dramedy “The Secret Art of Human Flight” will finally be released wide on August 3 with a digital premiere on the streaming app Kino in conjunction with Level33 Entertainment. The online event will include appearances from cast and crew including Grant Rosenmeyer, Maggie Grace, Academy Award nominee Paul Raci, and director H.P. Mendoza.

According to an official synopsis, “‘The Secret Art of Human Flight’ follows a grieving widower (Rosenmeyer) who, in the wake of a tragedy, turns to a mysterious self help book from the dark web written by an eccentric guru (Raci), which promises to unlock the power to fly.”

Following the film screening, viewers can tune in for a live Q&a session with the cast and crew, as well as a special appearance from astrologer/psychic Evan Grim who will conduct birth chart readings for them.

Liam Neeson’s career took a turn by the beginning of 2009 after his one film propelled him to the status of an action star. From 2008-2014, Neeson starred in three films in the Taken franchise, where he plays former CIA operative Bryan Mills. However, Neeson has one major regret in the film which made fans fall in love with the film in the first place.

Maggie Grace stars in a new British thriller Blackwater Lane, and the actress reflects back on her career in her latest interview with The Independent. The actress would become known widely as Liam Neeson‘s daughter from Taken — who went on the fateful trip that led to her kidnapping, which in turn gave Neeson a second career as an action star. She also reflects on her time on the hit ABC TV drama Lost. Grace portrayed Shannon Rutherford on that island as the resident “rich-girl-with-regrets.” The J.J. Abrams-produced and written show had premiered 20 years ago, but Grace still calls her exit from it to be one of the most heartbreaking aspects of her career.

Maggie Grace, who played Shannon Rutherford on hit ABC drama Lost, has recalled her relatively short stint on the series, saying she had hoped there would be more story for her character. The actress told The Independent in an interview published today that Shannon being killed off in episode six of the second season is “still the worst heartbreak of my career. I was devastated!”

Shannon began the series as a spoiled and unsympathetic character, but ultimately softened as her relationship with Sayid (Naveen Andrews) blossomed. As with several former series regulars, Grace’s Shannon returned for the 2010 Lost finale.

Grace elaborated that she “thought they were gonna take (Shannon) a little further,” but said she understood the reasoning, telling The Independent that the character “was sort of a caricature of white privilege before that was a phrase, you know? And maybe I was just too good at my assigned job of being incredibly annoying.

Before producer Michael Landon Jr. developed the When Calls the Heart TV show, he turned the same Janette Oke story into a Hallmark movie. The original plan was to film When Calls the Heart in Colorado.

Pierre Morrel's 2008 film "Taken" is brazenly morally irresponsible. 

"Taken" was not so much a thriller as an indulgent "dad fantasy," rooted in xenophobia and male sexual hysterics. The lead character, Bryan Mills, played by a wholly devoted and utterly capable Liam Neeson, was a divorced dad of a teenage girl named Kim (Maggie Grace) who saw his clout as a parent disappearing into the wealthy black hole of a cold-shouldered ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and her attentive new husband (Xander Berkeley). Bryan is a former CIA agent, and his job kept him away from home enough to damage his marriage. 13 Films has boarded worldwide sales for AFM on Bk Studios’ psychological thriller My Sister’s Bones starring Olga Kurylenko, Jenny Seagrove and Anna Friel and produced by the late Bill Kenwright.

Heidi Greensmith, whose debut feature Winter earned a 2015 Bifa nomination, directs the Bk Studios feature based on Nuala Ellwood’s novel of the same name about a woman who returns from war-torn Iraq following the death of her mother.

While packing up her mother’s belongings she begins to believe something terrifying is happening in the house next door.

Every Sunday evening, loyal Hearties take a break from real life and are transported to the world of Hope Valley. For 10 seasons (soon to be 11), Hallmark Channel’s beloved series When Calls the Heart has explored the stories of schoolteacher Elizabeth and the other residents of the small town on the Canadian frontier.

While Hallmark has brought Hope Valley to life on screen, fans can thank author Janette Oke for crafting the stories that inspired the show, which is based on her Canadian West series. And while When Calls the Heart diverted from its source material some time ago, Oke’s books remain a companion to the show. San Francisco microbudget filmmaker H.P Mendoza is bringing his Bay Area sensibilities to Tribeca.

The filmmaker best known for “Colma: The Musical” about the small town in San Mateo County, California is now turning his camera on a subject less musical but still as likely to become weirdly contagious: the pursuit of self-help. “The Secret Art of Human Flight” premieres at the Tribeca Festival this month, and IndieWire below shares the exclusive first trailer of the movie.

The cast includes Paul Raci, Oscar-nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2021 for his starring role in “Sound of Metal,” and he’s joined by cast members including Grant Rosenmeyer, Lucy DeVito, Nican Robinson, Reina Hardesty, Maggie Grace, and Sendhil Ramamurthy.

Mendoza directs the film from a screenplay by Jesse Orenshein. Mendoza shot the film with “I Think You Should Leave” cinematographer Markus Mentzer.

Fear the Walking Dead is returning for an eighth and final season on AMC. Over the weekend, it was revealed that viewers will see a seven-year time jump when the series returns on May 14th. The season will have 12 episodes and will be released in two parts. The second batch of six episodes will be released later this year.
