The long-awaited showdown between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has been bogged down by Instagram Story trolling, X bots, and artificial intelligence. While the rap world awaits Kendrick’s response to Drake, we’ve also been made to ponder technology’s role in societal decline. When the rap Gods declared “There are no rules in rap beef,” they likely weren’t imagining stan wars with hordes of X bot accounts feverishly posting sophomoric disses like “Daycares worldwide are being told to stay on high alert for Kendrick Lamar.”

A New York City musician and bus driver named Terrence Thomas has filed a copyright lawsuit claiming he has not been properly credited or paid for his work on Tupac’s classic song, “Dear Mama.”
Thomas, who used to DJ and produce under the name Master Tee, claims he was instrumental in the creation of “Dear Mama.” The lawsuit cites several old interviews with Tupac, as well as handwritten credits by the late rapper, naming Thomas as the creator of the song’s original beat.

Jada Pinkett Smith has opened up about the arrest of Duane “Keffe D” Davis in connection to the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur. The actress and Shakur were close friends who met one another when they were both students at Baltimore School of the Arts. Smith updated her Instagram Story with a simple message that read, “Now I hope we can get some answers and have some closure. R.I.P. Pac.”
Shakur was shot four times on Sept. 7, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The rapper and poet had recently left a boxing match in the city and was sitting in the car when he was hit. He ultimately died from his injuries on Sept. 13 of that year.
Davis has never denied being inside the white Cadillac that pulled up next to Shakur, but has insisted he was seated in the front passenger seat and that the shots were fired from the car’s back seat.

Duane Davis, a former gang member known as Keffe D, was indicted on one count of murder with a deadly weapon by a Nevada grand jury Friday.
The victim: Tupac Shakur.
It’s a case that has made national headlines since 1996 when it took place and has been the subject of a multitude of documentaries and scripted projects.
Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes, one-time friend and one-time foe of Tupac’s, was the most high-profile recent series, having premiered in April. The series focuses on Tupac’s relationship with his mother Afeni, a Black Panther activist, rather than his death.
Hughes told Deadline that today was a “great day for the family.”
He revealed that when he was pitching the project around Hollywood, he had a different subtitle: This Is Not A Murder Investigation.
“[Dear Mama] was very matter of fact, very frank about what happened.

Tupac Shakur’s one-time video director and now biographer has explained why he made a docuseries about the late rapper, despite being previously beaten up by him.
Allen Hughes, whose five-part docuseries Dear Mama is available on Hulu in the US, and will debut on the Disney+ platform in the UK on 1st October, told The Guardian newspaper that the altercation, which occurred three years before Shakur’s death, came from a misunderstanding after the pair clashed on the set of Hughes’s film Menace II Society.
Shakur had been cast in the film, but the pair disagreed over his character’s backstory, and Shakur walked off the production. A few months later, Hughes was beaten by the rapper’s entourage, with Shakur convicted of assault and sentenced to 15 days in jail.

Tupac Shakur has been gone for nearly three decades, but his popularity has never waned thanks to family, friends and collaborators like Jamal Joseph and Allen Hughes, who are behind FX’s Emmy-nominated docuseries Dear Mama.
It received two Emmy noms last month: for Outstanding Documentary or Non-Fiction Series and Outstanding Writing For a Non-Fiction Series for Hughes and Lasse Järvi.
The project tells the stories of the legendary rapper and actor, who was murdered in 1996 at the age of 25, and his mother Afeni Shakur, a Black Panther activist who died 20 years later at 69.
“I knew Tupac when he was in the womb. I’m one of the New York Panther 21. I joined the Black Panther Party when I was 15,” Joseph, a Dear Mama executive producer and doc subject, said during the show’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event.

"My mother taught me to analyze society, and not be quiet. If there's something on my mind – speak it!" Yes! Earlier this year, Hulu & FX released this documentary series titled Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur streaming online. We posted the original teaser when it debuted last year, and now want to feature this main trailer as well. "Afeni had a revolutionary story, Tupac helped her tell it to the world." From award-winning director Allen Hughes comes FX's Dear Mama, a deeply personal 5-part doc series that defies the conventions of traditional storytelling to share an illuminating saga of mother and son: Black Panther activist Afeni and famous slain rapper Tupac Shakur. Their story chronicles the possibilities and contradictions of America from a time of revolutionary fervor in the 60s right into Hip Hop culture's most ostentatious decade. Tupac was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in...

FX’s docuseries Dear Mama set a new ratings high for an unscripted series debut on the Disney-owned outlet.
The chronicle of the lives of Tupac and Afeni Shakur, which premiered April 21, passed Welcome to Wrexham as FX’s most watched unscripted debut in cross-platform viewers. The full cross-platform figures aren’t being released, per FX policy, but the majority of Dear Mama’s audience likely streamed the show on Hulu.
The two-episode premiere of Dear Mama, directed by Allen Hughes, averaged about 185,000 viewers for its on-air debut (episode one drew 196,000). That trailed Welcome to Wrexham’s linear premiere in August 2022 (it averaged 271,000 viewers for its first two episodes), but Dear Mama made up the difference with streaming and other delayed viewing. Streaming often makes up the majority of viewing for series that originate on ad-supported and premium cable outlets.

Director Allen Hughes has evolved into a deft and imaginative documentarian, just the latest pleasant surprise in a long, eclectic career. His best-known films are the scripted fare he co-directed with his twin brother Albert, including “Menace II Society” and “Dead Presidents,” which dove deep into the lives of young, disaffected Black men. The brothers dabbled in documentary with 1999’s “American Pimp,” another film about Black men thriving in a brutal subculture, but the film’s insights were mostly washed out by its prurience.
Since then, the Hugheses have pursued solo projects, but Allen found new traction with “The Defiant Ones,” the HBO docuseries chronicling the durable and fruitful partnership between Dr. Dre and Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine. It has been nearly 27 years since Tupac Shakur was murdered, meaning that the hip-hop icon has been gone for longer than the 25 years he walked the earth. At this point, as we’re in our third decade of mythologizing every aspect of his brief life, chances of fully extricating the truths about Tupac from various tall tales are low.
Allen Hughes’ new FX documentary Dear Mama at least has a coherent, ambitious and sometimes productive approach. At five hours (and then-some), the series feels overstuffed, albeit in a way that mirrors its prolific subject, and some of its connective swings are misguided at best. But Dear Mama has some real insights into the intersection of Black activism and popular music in the late 20th century.
Hughes’ approach, one that has been taken before in Tupac scholarship but surely not at this depth, is to directly parallel the lives of Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur.

Snoop Dogg’s story is one step closer to the big screen as director Allen Hughes confirmed the Universal biopic about the rapper is set to begin production imminently.
“That’s next. We’re starting this summer. I’m so excited,” Hughes told Variety on Tuesday night at the premiere of his upcoming FX docuseries “Dear Mama,” which chronicles the lives of Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni Shakur.
Hughes — an Emmy and Peabody award nominee whose filmography includes “Menace II Society,” “Dead Presidents,” “The Book of Eli” and “The Defiant Ones” — will direct the yet-to-be-titled Snoop Dogg biopic. Announced in November, the Universal movie is the first film produced by Death Row Pictures, following Snoop’s acquisition of Death Row Records in 2022.
“He surprised me with that biopic,” Hughes said of signing on to the film, which is billed as the “definitive” take on Snoop’s life and career.

Hulu's "UnPrisoned" is the unconventional father-daughter story we've yet to see on television, but it's a necessary watch that speaks to a lot of real-world topics. The heartwarming dramedy - created and executive produced by Tracy McMillan - premiered on the streamer on March 10, introducing viewers to a "messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom" named Paige (played by Kerry Washington), "whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad, [Edwin], (Delroy Lindo) gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana)."
"UnPrisoned" takes a half-serious look at the after-effects of America's criminal justice system, mixing humor and heart to address a reality McMillan tells Popsugar many people face every day. "We're showing a Black family and an experience that has not been seen on television before," she says. "We've seen people in prison and we've seen people going to prison, but...

It's Tupac and Afeni Shakur like you've never seen them before. FX released the trailer for its new five-part docuseries "Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur" on March 22, and it's an emotional and reflective look at the bond between Tupac, the legendary rapper who died at just 25 years old in 1996, and his mother, Afeni. As Tupac notes in an archival interview in the trailer, his mother was a Black Panther and political activist who instilled her values of freedom, power, and revolution into her son, whom she gave birth to in 1971 when she was 24.
Tupac notes in the interview, which he gave when he was 17, that he and his mom had a complicated relationship. While he cherished many of the lessons she taught him, she was also often unavailable because of her life in activism. And as Tupac detailed in his song "Dear Mama,...

As the Peak TV era begins to narrow in 2023, FX chairman John Landgraf said during the Winter TCA Press Tour there’s “cause for concern” but also conveyed optimism for more diverse programming.
While discussing his prediction that this year will likely kick off an industry-wide decline in new scripted series orders, Disney’s chairman of FX content and productions told reporters he is committed to prioritizing shows created by and featuring diverse voices. However, he noted that might not be the case elsewhere, as companies aim to appeal to the widest audiences with their new content.
“If you’re just going for the biggest meat of the audience, the majority, you tend to program to white men. So if you get a scripted program that appeals to men that’s automatically a boom,” Landgraf said. “(Diverse programming) is and will always be a priority at FX.”

"It was my responsibility to teach Tupac how to survive his reality." FX has unveiled a teaser for their new doc series titled Dear Mama, which will be out on Hulu in early 2023. The series is about the relationship between musician Tupac Shakur and his indomitable mother, Afeni Shakur, who was a Black Panther. The story told in the upcoming series, other than being an exploration of two significant figures in American history, is also a reflection of our own times. Dear Mama comes from the rapper's 1995 hit song. The song explores his relationship with his mom and serves as a tribute to all of the hardships she went through in having and raising him. The song also addresses her struggle with drug addictions, which led to hardships in both of their lives. Tupac was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996, only the year after releasing Dear Mama,...

A Snoop Dogg biopic is in the works at Universal Pictures.
The Grammy-nominated rapped and Emmy-winning producer is behind an upcoming movie that will tell his life story. The feature is the first project under Snoop’s new Death Row Pictures production banner. Allen Hughes (who directed films like “Menace II Society” and “The Book of Eli” with his twin brother Albert) is confirmed to be directing the film from a script by Joe Robert Cole (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”). Snoop produces along with helmer Hughes and Sara Ramaker.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray onscreen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” Snoop said in a statement. “It was the perfect marriage.

Exclusive: This morning in Toronto, writer-director Allen Hughes and FX unveil the first of their five-part docuseries Dear Mama. This is an epic exploration of the life of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur and his late mom, Afeni Shakur, the former Black Panthers member. It is Hughes’ first trip back to TIFF since he and brother Albert came to unveil their Johnny Depp pic From Hell, only to see that title become all too apt when, on their media day 21 years ago, everything got canceled when two hijacked planes crashed into and took down the Twin Towers. At the behest of the estate of the Shakur family, Hughes — who, aside from films like The Book of Eli, directed the acclaimed docuseries The Defiant Ones on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine — spent years diving deep into the mythology of Tupac to answer why his art endures so long after he was shot...

Snoop Dogg wasn’t expecting to see Tupac Shakur in such terrible shape when his fellow rapper was in the hospital after his 1996 shooting in Las Vegas.
Speaking on Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast, Snoop Dogg recounted what he saw in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
“When we drive to Vegas to see Pac, we got to Suge (Knight’s) house first, so we haven’t even seen Pac,” Former Death Row head Knight was driving the vehicle when Tupac was shot in the passenger’s seat.
“We just talking to Suge, and he got the head wrapped up and he telling us what happened and [saying] ‘Pac gonna be alright, he going to pull through he got shot nine times before, he going to be alright.’”
That proved to be an entirely optimistic view, as Snoop Dogg soon discovered.

You know the story of Tupac Shakur, the now-legendary hip hop icon: uber-prolific, courting fame, controversy, and a rock n’ roll lifestyle of superstardom, Shakur’s hip hop reign was all too brief and he was gunned down by rivals when his career was still ascending. What’s lesser-known to many is the story of Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, an American political activist and former member of the Black Panther Party, their love, their sometimes strained relationship, but also the way her political defiance influenced the music of her son.

A biopic of Afeni Shakur — the late mother of rapper Tupac and a prominent member of the Black Panther party — is in the works from Amaru Entertainment and the Shakur Estate.
Titled “Peace, Love & Respect; the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story,” actor/singer Jasmine Guy and writer/director Jamal Joseph — who was arrested as one of the “Panther 21” with Afeni — are on board as executive producers, while Dina Lapolt, who worked with the estate for many years, is a producer. The film, titled “Peace, Love & Respect, the Afeni Shakur/Panther 21 story,” is the first to have the full backing and approval of the Shakur estate.
The film will span a pivotal two-year period — from April 2, 1969, when she and 20 other Black Panthers were arrested and charged with conspiracy to bomb police stations in New York, through June 16, 1971, the day Tupac was born — along with flashbacks to childhood and teenage years.

When Tupac Shakur passed away on Sept. 7, 1996, he was survived by his mother, Afeni Shakur, father Billy Garland, and half-sister Sekyiwa Shakur, but what many people don't know is that he also left behind his ex-wife, Keisha Morris. Tupac and Keisha first met at Capitol nightclub in NYC in the Summer of 1994, while she was studying criminal justice at John Jay College and working as a camp counselor. Keisha was 20 and Tupac was 21.
"We were dancing, and we spoke briefly. He was going through something legally at the time, and I told him to just be careful of the people he's around and that I hope everything works out," Keisha told Xxl magazine in 2011. "I saw him a month later at the Tunnel [another nightclub], and he remembered the whole conversation. He told me he had been looking for me for a month - going to every club.

He was going through something legally at the time, and I told him to just be careful of the people he's around and that I hope everything works out," Keisha told Xxl magazine in 2011. Benny Boom’s life story of the rapper manages to feel both rushed and stretched
Who shot Tupac Shakur? For a generation of hip-hop fans, this question has loomed large since the rapper’s murder in 1996, when he was just 25 years old. Music video director and frequent Nicki Minaj collaborator Benny Boom’s bloated biopic isn’t interested in solving the mystery of Shakur’s death, trying instead to build a comprehensive picture of his life. Yet, for its two-hour, 20-minute run time, it feels somehow both rushed and stretched. Racing chronologically through Shakur’s childhood in New York and teen years in Baltimore and Oakland, before charting his rise under the supervision of Death Row Records mogul Marion “Suge” Knight (Dominic L Santana), it never really settles into a groove.
Demetrius Shipp Jr bears an uncanny resemblance to Shakur but doesn’t quite possess the star quality to outshine the script,...
