A new Batman animated film is in the works that introduces a new version of the caped crusader. The film, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios a.k.a The Clash of the Empires, will feature an Aztec Batman who becomes the vigilante after his father dies during a Spanish inquisition. The film will be produced by WB Animation and DC.
Aztec Batman gives a cultural revamp to the characters that appear in the DC comics, taking popular characters such as the Joker and Harvey Dent and adapting them to suit the Aztec culture. While many are excited about this new take on the cape crusader, some fans seem to be taking issue with the change in the character’s original design and characteristics.

More Harlivy is on the way.
Max has renewed raunchy, violent animated series “Harley Quinn” for Season 5, just a couple months after Season 4 finished its run. The animated DC show, starring Kaley Cuoco as Harley Quinn and Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, has proven to be a hit for Max, and it even has its own spinoff, “Kite Man: Hell Yeah,” coming in 2024.
“‘Harley Quinn’ has raised the comedic crowbar with every new season. We’re excited to continue this partnership with Max and take our biggest swing yet for Season 5,” said Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation, in a statement.
In Season 4, Harley began working with the Bat-Family, including Robin, Nightwing and Batgirl, while Ivy assumed her new role as the CEO of the Legion of Doom. As Harley started to embrace her more heroic endeavors, she and Ivy butted heads in their relationship.

Bruce Timm is taking another stab at the Dark Knight with Batman: Caped Crusader. Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming for Warner Bros. Animation Peter Girardi told the crowd at Annecy (via Variety) that Caped Crusader will give Timm the opportunity to do everything he wasn’t able to do with Batman: The Animated Series.
“It’s everything that Bruce Timm wanted to do in the original series [the 1992 “Batman, the Animated Series”] but because it ran on a kid’s channel, he wasn’t able to do it,” Peter Girardi said. “So this definitely skews older. It’s more of his complete vision.” The Batman: Caped Crusader footage screened at Annecy was in the early stages, but was described as “ultra noir” with a “brooding tone.“

Annecy — London-based Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe is set to initiate production next week on “Beast Boy: Lone Wolf,” the first time than a DC title that will be made out of the U.K.
The announcement was made at a studio focus for Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, whose fan favourites had a student/exec audience hollering in approval.
Introduced by Sam Register, president of all three companies, the focus must rate at the fastest-paced of all big studio unveils at Annecy, packed by never-seen-before footage of multiple shows. Register didn’t talk strategy: The audience wanted to see shows, and studio execs were excited to show them.
Indirectly, however, the focus said much about the state of animation at Warner Bros. Discovery after it scaled back on originals and restructured organization last year. Some pivots seen at the focus:

Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows the industry is “being much more bullish” about adult animation than when his popular programming block premiered in 2001 on Cartoon Network. It’s a noteworthy shift for Western audiences, who’ve spent decades watching mostly family sitcoms dominate the medium.
“Without people making animation synonymous with kids only, I don’t even know if we’d ever use the term ‘adult animation.’ It’s a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s something secret about animation that allows it to last longer, travel more and mean more to people — for them to wear it as their identity a little easier — than other production methods.”

There is a whole new Batman in town.
Despite that familiar name, upcoming “Aztec Batman: The Clash of Empires” will introduce an original hero, assured its team during their riotous presentation at Annecy.
Overseen by Warner Bros. Animation and DC, the film is produced in Mexico in partnership with Ánima and Chatrone.
“This is a bold project,” admitted director Juan Meza-León, joined on stage by character designer Marvick Núñez and art director Diego Olascoaga. Promising an alternate take on the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, but also opening up about his protagonist’s surprising yet apparently historically accurate look.
“No big jaw, no big shoulders. Slimmer. A little less Schwarzenegger, a little more Bruce Lee. We had to focus on the man underneath the armor,” he said.
“We wanted to be true to the story we were telling. We hired an expert on Aztec matters, who was advising us every step of the way,...

As James Gunn and Peter Safran reshape the DC universe at Warner Bros. Discovery, film and TV aren’t the only mediums where iconic characters like Batman, Harley Quinn and the Joker are taking on new lives.
Thanks to an expansive, multiyear first-look deal with Spotify, DC has attracted new and returning fans to its rich IP — without being beholden to the intricacies of a mapped-out multiverse, the same actors portraying its characters or the costs of a typical high-wattage and effects-heavy superhero production.
The partnership kicked off in earnest last year, when Spotify and DC released an original story about Batman for an audio series penned by The Dark Knight scribe David S. Goyer. Starring Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Batman Unburied took on a decidedly darker tone as a psychological thriller that followed Bruce tracking down a serial killer and confronting his own demons along the way. Following Tuesday’s news of layoffs and restructurings within Warner Bros. Television Group, many animation fans and creators have taken to social media to express worry about the state of Cartoon Network Studios within the company — which sources from Warner Bros. maintain is unfounded.
The layoffs, announced on Tuesday, heavily affected the animation division of the company. As laid out in a memo sent by Television Group chief Channing Dungey, the three studios the animation division consists of — Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe — will remain intact. While Hanna-Barbera will operate independently due to geographical distance, Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation will merge their development and production teams. Announced on Thursday, Cartoon Network execs Tricia Melton and Jill King are the latest to go as part of the merger.

Warner Bros. Television Group handed out pink slips to 82 staffers on Tuesday, representing 19 of the studio’s workforce, across its scripted, unscripted and animation divisions. Additionally, it has opted not to fill 43 additional vacant positions — making for a total elimination of 125 jobs (or 26 of an approximately 481 headcount).
Warner Bros. TV Group declined comment, but it’s understood that chairman Channing Dungey detailed to staff a series of changes that included various levels of consolidation in unscripted and animation. The streamer announced the news on Wednesday, a few weeks ahead of the season three finale on Sept. 15. The renewal came as a celebration for fans, but admittedly a surprise for some, considering the recent slew of cancelations at the streamer, particularly on animated projects.

Though the Critters films have never been popular with the critics, the franchise’s four-movie run from 1986 to 1992 apparently left enough of an impression on horror fans for the series to be resurrected decades later in the form of an upcoming TV show titled Critters: A New Binge.
With a title so inescapably reminiscent of the 1990 film Gremlins 2: The New Batch, it’s almost as though Critters is embracing its reputation as a Gremlins rip-off franchise, though going by the show’s first trailer, A New Binge is leaning further into campy comedy than the Critters’ mogwai cousins ever did. Complete with goofy, gory death scenes, over-the-top acting and low-budget FX, the 1-minute preview should provide all the footage you need to decide whether or not the series is for you.

The classic Critters horror film franchise is returning in the form of a TV series that’s set for streaming service Shudder.

Regardless, Critters is getting a long-overdue return.

John Constantine, done right, is one of DC Comics’ strongest characters. The current incarnation in the Rebirth universe is a pale comparison to his Vertigo roots and the NBC series didn’t push the horrific elements far enough. Matt Ryan’s wonderful interpretation has been further watered down for the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, so hearing him in all his weary glory in Constantine: City of Demons is most welcome.
This is one of the best animated adaptations of a comic book character, thanks to letting it be an R-rated film ensuring the horror/supernatural elements were true to the source material and not just curse words tossed in for “authenticity”. Kudos to J.M. DeMatteis for bringing Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben’s character to proper life. His original script loosely adapts Hellblazer: All His Engines graphic novel by Mike Carey and Leonardo Manco.

Did I do that? Hulu viewers have a lot of time on their hands — enough time to binge watch the entire libraries of classic ABC “Tgif” shows including “Family Matters,” “Boy Meets World,” and “Full House,” in short amounts of time.
Among key details revealed by Hulu to IndieWire: 60,000 Hulu subscribers have already watched all 60 hours (or 120 episodes) of “Boy Meets World,” the coming-of-age sitcom that aired between 1993 and 2000 on ABC.
Also, the average “Family Matters” fan who watched the entire series in 2017 on Hulu — all nine seasons that aired from 1989 to 1997 — completed their binge within a month. That’s equal to consuming more than two seasons of Urkel and company per week.
And over the past year, among Hulu viewers who watched all eight seasons of the original run of “Full House” (1987-1995), they averaged their entire binge over the course of just one month.

With peak TV hovering at almost 500 scripted shows alone, for many content providers the question is not how to break through that glut with a standout original of their own but instead how to make sure the audience can find the content they will connect with on their specific platforms.
“Roku has over 5000 channels,” Rob Holmes, head of programming for the Ott service, said at the Atx Television Festival Thursday. “Our purpose was really to make it easy to find free stuff. …We worked with a variety of partners to make…sort of an end-cap, like you’d find in a supermarket. [The free content] is curated into this experience that’s front and center on the platform.”
Holmes acknowledged that as the landscape changes, there is an “increasing challenge to highlight the great stuff that’s there.”

When the animated Constantine series premieres on The CW Seed, it will pick up where the live-action series left off, albeit with one exception. Peter Girardi, Evp of Blue Ribbon Content informed press at the TCA winter tour (via Slashfilm) the series will be much darker than its predecessor:
The Constantine that we’re doing, it’s Constantine. If you’re familiar with the character Constantine from the Vertigo comic, it’s dark, darker than the show.
Girardi suggested parents not let their younger children watch the series when it debuts later this year. I'll give the series a shot, of course, but I would much rather see John Constantine back in the Arrow-verse in a much more permanent capacity. What about you?...

Despite following a cult favourite character, CBS’ Constantine – starring Matt Ryan as DC’s occult detective John Constantine – didn’t live past its initial 13 episode debut season. That wasn’t the end of this version of the antihero, though, as Ryan later reprised the role for an episode of Arrow and, more recently, Legends of Tomorrow. This year, he’ll also be leading his own animated webseries.
But how will this new show compare to the short-lived live-action version? Will it strip away the darker edges of the demonic world Constantine inhabits to make it more family-friendly? Not at all. In fact, it’s going to do the opposite and push the boundaries even more than the CBS series did.
While speaking with Collider, CW Seed’s VP Peter Girardi claimed that the upcoming animation will be even darker than Matt Ryan’s live-action appearances. The topic came up as...

After more than 25 years since their last official film appearance, the Crites from Critters are coming back, this time as a series for Verizon's go90 streaming service.
Announced at the Television Critics Association's (TCA) 2018 Winter Press Tour, Critters: A New Binge is one of two new projects that have been given a series order by Verizon's go90, with Warner Bros. Television Group's Blue Ribbon Content digital studio on board to create the series.
An adaptation of the film franchise that featured little furry space creatures known as Crites (as well as Krites), Critters: A New Binge will once again bring the hungry aliens back down to Earth, this time in search of one of their own.
Spanning four films from 1986 to 1992, the Critters franchise pitted the invading Crites against bounty hunters from outer space, often with humans stuck in the middle (or on the menu). The Critters movies...
