The phrase "animal rescue" suggests that humans are the rescuers, but The Wound And The Gift sets out to demonstrate, through gorgeous animation and exquisite cinematography, how this anthropocentric bias fails to capture the uniqueness, complexity, and reciprocity of relationships that form between humans and animals. Documentary director Linda Hoaglund has assembled a world class team of collaborators to explore such relationships, and in so doing reveals a startling individuality that transforms these creatures into characters. The Wound And The Gift takes it's title from an old Japanese fable, which suggests that human actions inevitably betray the trust between Man and Nature. Hoaglund uses an animated telling of this tale to parse beautiful documentary footage, guiding us from the familiar sense of responsibility we take...

I first watched Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood (1957) six years ago. It was only the third film from Kurosawa I'd seen and I actually wrote a piece (which was really nothing more than an extended synopsis) after my first viewing right here, which is a rather interesting read six years removed. I remember not entirely enjoying Throne of Blood, when I first watched it and reading the piece linked above I see I found it largely interesting due to the fact it's an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" while I also take issue with the length of some scenes, a complaint I read now and realize how much my taste has changed since writing that post. If you were to ask what I remembered of Throne of Blood before rewatching Criterion's newest Blu-ray upgrade, I'd say it would be 1.) the ghostly white spirits in Spiders' Web forest; 2.) the smoke-filled visuals...

“French Burglars And Shakespearean Samurais”
By Raymond Benson
Two of the superb releases recently issued by The Criterion Collection are classics from the 1950s international scene. One is arguably the best caper/heist movie ever made, and the other is perhaps the best Shakespearean adaptation ever produced.
First up—Rififi, released in 1955 and directed by American director Jules Dassin—who had exiled himself from America due to the blacklist. It’s a film noir made in France with French and Italian actors and a French crew. As the lyrics in a cabaret number, sung by Magali Noel in the film, reveal, rififi means “rough and tumble.” In other words, Rififi is about riff-raff, tough guys, and would-be gangsters. In this case, the protagonists are a quartet of jewel thieves who plan a big caper together—to break into the safe in a notable jewelry store in Paris. Led by Tony...

Toshiro Mifune gets the point at the climax of Throne of Blood.
A vivid, visceral Macbeth adaptation, the 1957 action drama Throne of Blood, directed by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), sets Shakespeare’s definitive tale of ambition and duplicity in a ghostly, fog-enshrouded landscape in feudal Japan.
As a tough warrior who rises savagely to power, Toshiro Mifune (Yojimbo) gives a remarkable, animalistic performance, as does Isuzu Yamada (Black River) as his ruthless wife.
A classic of international cinema, Throne of Blood fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from Noh theater to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. Linda Hoaglund may very well be the only movie translator and subtitler known by name around the world, discerning fans having long ago realized that her translations of Japanese films displayed a rare degree of grace and style and subtlety. In her translation work Hoaglund has the ability to capture the nuance and personality of things as well as the literal meaning and that work sets her above most of her peers by a healthy margin. And soon Toronto audiences will have the chance to see if that grace translates into her work as a director of films as well with the arrival of her documentary Anpo: Art X War at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Anpo: Art X War depicts resistance to U.S. military bases in Japan through an electrifying collage of paintings, photographs and animated, narrative and documentary films by Japan's foremost contemporary artists. The artwork vividly...

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

As I've said in the past, I am not someone to rush out and watch a ton of documentaries, even though I love nearly every single one I see. So, when today's list of 23 documentaries that will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival was announced I didn't exactly rush to check it out, although now upon giving it a once over I see there is a lot to look out for.
As for the obvious titles that are sure to generate the most buzz you have Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams, which follows Herzog inside the Chauvet caves of southern France where he uses 3D technology to take us back in time over 30,000 years. I saw most of Charles Ferguson's Inside Job at Cannes, but couldn't keep my eyes open and had to bail before it ended and I am anxious to check out Alex Gibney...

If ever there was a reason for me to want to clone myself, it would be so that one part of me could squeeze every last drop out of this year's Real to Reel selections. Doc programmer Thom Powers has assembled what appears to be a vintage offering this year, literally a who's who from the documentary field with world preems from Naomi Kawase, Errol Morris (see pic), Ondi Timoner, Alex Gibney, Kim Longinotto and Werner Herzog, while adding to the mix a foursome of must see documentaries from Cannes with Charles Ferguson's Inside Job, Patricio Guzmán's Nostalgia for the Light, Janus Metz's Armadillo and Frederick Wiseman's Boxing Gym. Luis Guerin's Guest, a travel-doc film about traveling the film fest circuit, will travel from Venice preem to a Toronto unveiling. There's so much to say about these selections, look for more commentary prior to the fest. Here's the full listing below.

Toronto -- Tribeca may have offered a sneak peek, but the Toronto International Film Festival has the world premiere of Alex Gibney's "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer" from Magnolia Pictures.
Oscar-winning Gibney's latest documentary about the sex scandal that enveloped the former New York governor, and which includes an on-camera interview with Spitzer and some of the players that brought about his political downfall, was billed as a "work-in-progress" at Tribeca.
Now Toronto gets Gibney's finished doc ahead of a Nov. 5 theatrical release, and Spitzer getting a CNN primetime newshow gig this fall alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathleen Parker.
"Client 9" also figured Wednesday among 25 factual films unveiled by fest organizers as part of Toronto's Real to Reel, Masters and Sprockets Family Zone sidebars.
