India Donaldson’s feature directorial debut “Good One” world premiered at Sundance and screened at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. In the coming-of-age drama, 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias) embarks on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills with her dad, Chris (James Le Gros) and his oldest friend, Matt (Danny McCarthy). As the two men quickly settle into a gently quarrelsome brotherly dynamic, airing long-held grievances, Sam attempts to mediate their disputes. But when lines are crossed and Sam’s trust is betrayed, tensions reach a fever pitch.
“Meanwhile on Earth” is the live-action debut of Jérémy Clapin who was nominated for an Academy Award for his adult animated film “I Lost My Body.” The film, which premiered at the Berlinale earlier this year, stars Meghan Northam (“The Passengers of the Night”) in her debut feature starring role.

"Are they staying here?" Metrograph FIlms has revealed the first official trailer for Good One, one of the most critically acclaimed films from this year's 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Good One is the feature debut of filmmaker India Donaldson, proving she has an eye for detail and a knack for nuanced storytelling. The film also features the breakout lead performance by Lily Collias as the main character Sam. Donaldson's heralded first feature, starring the talented Lily Collias, is Metrograph Picture's first new release of 2024, and the only film this year to play at both the Sundance & Cannes Film Festivals – it's screening soon in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar in Cannes this month. One of the critically best-ranked films (according to Indiewire’s Critics Poll – and our publication) to break out of this year’s Sundance becomes the maiden voyage debut film for a distrib we are excited about in Metrograph Pictures (we are expecting close to a dozen releases). Variety reports that India Donaldson’s Good One — what we could call a coming-of-ager dramedy will be launched this summer. As this will be seen as Reichardt-ian type cinema, further film festival play is expected with a major European premiere as a big possibility.

Metrograph Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Good One,” one of the breakouts of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. The indie film had its world premiere in the U.S. Narrative Competition section. It’s the feature debut of writer and director India Donaldson, and stars newcomer Lily Collias, whose performance captivated critics, alongside James Le Gros (“Showing Up”) and Danny McCarthy.
This marks the first title acquired by Metrograph Pictures, which recently expanded into releasing films theatrically under the leadership of David Laub, a former A24 executive who now heads distribution for the new studio growing out of Metrograph’s New York theater. The film will receive a national theatrical release in summer 2024.
“We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to release India Donaldson’s wonderful Sundance breakout as our first acquisition under David’s new leadership of Metrograph Pictures,” Christian Grass, CEO of Metrograph, said in a statement.

Early in writer-director India Donaldson’s Good One, during lunch at a diner, 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias) takes an enormous bite of a burger. “I thought you were a vegetarian,” her father, Chris (James Le Gros), bemoans. She replies that she’s “never been one,” to which Matt (Danny McCarthy), Chris’s oldest friend, incredulously states, “You seem like one.”
The essence of Donaldson’s feature-length directorial debut, which traces this trio’s weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills, is distilled in that seemingly throwaway moment, as this is a film about two adults who spend much time presumptuously ascribing stereotypical behavior to the teens in their midst. Though Sam is on her way to college, about to face the onset of adulthood, her divorced parents barely notice the young woman developing before their eyes. Good One, then, in its glimpse of a generational divide, is less a tale of...

Back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Celine Song’s debut feature, “Past Lives,” premiered to rave reviews and early speculation about its awards chances. That turned out to be prescient. One year later, “Past Lives” is a 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominee, while Song is a nominee for Best Original Screenplay. So with the 2024 Sundance Film Festival at its end, what better time than now to speculate about what next year’s “Past Lives” will be? Whether anything on 2024’s Sundance roster can scale those heights is up for debate, but plenty of promising titles could compete for acting and screenplay prizes. The documentary lineup was robust this year, which makes sense: Six of the last 10 Best Documentary Feature Film winners got their start at Sundance.

A slight but sensitive and fantastically assured debut that unfolds with the pointillistic detail of a great short story, India Donaldson’s “Good One” is a coming-of-age story that jettisons all of the genre’s most familiar trappings in favor of a long walk in the woods.
There were supposed to be four people on the upstate New York camping trip, but one of the teens dropped out because he didn’t want to spend one of their last pre-college weekends sleeping in a polyester tent with his dad. That leaves anxious divorcee Chris, his avuncular best friend Matt, and Chris’ queer 17-year-old daughter Sam (extraordinary newcomer Lily Collias), who dutifully comes along because she’s always seen it as her job to keep what little peace is left in her family. To not be a burden. To make her parents feel like they still know her, even if they...

It’s been nearly two decades since Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy showed how the wilderness can be an open canvas to explore the breaking points of male friendship and reckoning with a midlife crisis. While those emotional quandaries are evergreen, it’s appropriate timing to bring an entirely new element to this conceit. India Donaldson’s carefully observed, refreshingly patient, beautifully rendered debut feature Good One shifts the perspective, concerning a 17-year-old girl who embarks on a camping trip in the Catskills with her father and his best friend. Through an accumulation of minute details and uneasy glances, the drama becomes a portrait of increasingly crossed boundaries leading to an ultimate breaking point.

As teenagers go — and let us allow for some hormonal leeway here — 17-year-old Sam is what most would call a good one: smart, thoughtful, grounded, self-sufficient but not averse to advice, the kind of kid that parents can’t help bragging about, as their friends wish their own nightmare offspring were a little more like her. But such a reputation has its downside, as elders take the teen’s compliance and good humor for granted, and expect undue allowances for their own irresponsibilities. Writer-director India Donaldson probes that awkward reversal of roles with delicacy and care in her debut feature “Good One,” monitoring the white lies and red flags that emerge over the course of a father-daughter camping weekend in upstate New York.

India Donaldson has been ready to make her narrative feature debut for a while now, with three short films under her belt already. 82 films have been selected to screen during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, eight episodic titles and a New Frontier interactive experience have made the cut and will be included in the upcoming festival.
17,435 projects were submitted for 2024 inclusion, setting a new festival record.
“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”
The 40th Sundance Film Festival will take place January 18 – 28, 2024, in Park City and Salt Lake City. Ticket packages and passes are currently on sale.
82 films have been selected to screen during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, eight episodic titles and a New Frontier interactive experience have made the cut and will be included in the upcoming festival.

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...

Friday the 13th and Spooky Season converge this month, so what better time to see an “Exorcist” sequel? “The Exorcist: Believer” is a follow-up to the iconic 1973 film, dubbed my many as the scariest movie ever made. This new movie promises frights and terror in equal measure, and if you’re not seeing Taylor Swift’s concert movie or are looking for something scary to watch, you may be wondering where, exactly, you can see “The Exorcist: Believer.”
Here’s everything you need to know.
Is “The Exorcist: Believer” in Theaters or Streaming?
The film opened exclusively in theaters on Oct. 6, so right now the only way to see it is to buy a movie ticket. However, you won’t have to wait long to catch the film at home. The film is currently available on PVOD and will be streaming on Peacock on Dec. 1.

India Donaldson picked up the Polish Film Institute Award for her upcoming feature “Good One” at the American Film Festival in Wrocław, coming with a $50,000 cash prize for post-production in Poland.
“It’s an affirmation of how we have been working and what we have been working towards,” Los Angeles-based Donaldson told Variety after the ceremony.
“Good One” – presented during Aff’s industry event U.S. in Progress and set to be finished in January 2024 – sees 17-year-old Sam heading on a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills with her father and his oldest friend.
“It’s a very personal story, although I wouldn’t say it’s autobiographical,” said Donaldson, who wrote the film during the pandemic.
“I was living at home for the first time since I was a teenager. With my father, my stepmother and my two teenage half-siblings, who were at high-school at the time. For the most part,...

Exactly 50 years ago, the world was introduced to a cinematic experience that would forever change the horror landscape. The Exorcist didn’t just turn heads (pun intended); it spun them 360 degrees. Fast forward to today, and we have David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer, a film that tries to channel the terror of its predecessor, but ultimately feels more muddled than a bowl of pea soup.
Our story revolves around Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.), a single father who’s been raising his daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) since the tragic death of his wife in a Haitian earthquake. Life takes a dark turn when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) vanish into the woods, only to return three days later, eerily changed and with no memory of their ordeal. The setup is intriguing. The girls’ mysterious disappearance, the full-blown police search, and the subsequent medical scenes are all effectively executed,...

Everything that sprouts from the soil of The Exorcist pales in comparison, with only Jeremy Slater’s The Exorcist series (canceled far too soon after just two seasons) living up to the standards of William Peter Blatty’s book and William Friedkin’s film adaptation. With the bar set incredibly high, the odds were against The Exorcist: Believer from the start. And, unfortunately, not even the much-ballyhooed return of Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil can cast out the dreaded sequel demons.
The film kicks off with a flashback that only fills in minor story elements (since this is only part one of a planned trilogy). 13 years ago, married photographers Victor and Sorenne were visiting Haiti when a devastating earthquake struck the city. Victor escaped unharmed, but Sorenne was gravely injured. She survived just long enough to give birth to their daughter,...

Fifty years ago, writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin changed the face of possession horror with the seminal feature The Exorcist, which inspired sequels and prequels that never quite reached the same box office highs of the original, along with a short-lived TV series. Director David Gordon Green and Blumhouse, fresh off the recent Halloween trilogy, reteam for a new chapter, The Exorcist: Believer, once again eschewing all canon beyond the original film. Introduced as the first in a new trilogy, Believer attempts to comment on religion in a modern world. However, its thinly sketched narrative and reliance on nostalgia works against it.

HBO has released a trailer for the sophomore outing of “Somebody Somewhere,” the critically acclaimed comedy series inspired by the life of star Bridget Everett. Billed by HBO as “a totally platonic love story,” the series will continue to explore love, loss, and acceptance as it focuses on the relationship between Sam (Everett) and Joel (Jeff Hiller), her new best friend who introduces her to a chosen family of self-perceived “outsiders.”
The trailer opens with the duo singing and dancing as they make martinis and reveals that Joel has temporarily moved in with Sam. This new dynamic is certain to provide more heartwarming moments and potential new conflicts as the show’s emcee of sorts, Fred (Murray Hill), is depicted explaining to Sam that, “Families aren’t easy. Not even the fun ones.”

Amiah Miller and Bill Heck are rounding out the cast of Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming horror thriller film “Dust.”
The film stars Sarah Paulson of “American Horror Story,” Annaleigh Ashford and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in a story set in 1930s Oklahoma. It follows a woman who, during the region’s increasingly perilous dust storms, is convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family. The film is directed by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse, and Crouse penned the script. “Dust” commenced principal photography this week in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Miller previously starred as Nova in the 2017 film from 20th Century Studios “War for the Planet of the Apes” alongside Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn. In 2020, she was also seen in David Oyelowo’s feature directorial debut “The Water Man.”

At the request of company members of Broadway’s The Minutes, producers announced today that audiences will be required to continue masking through the play’s final performance on Sunday, July 24, nearly a month after Broadway at large will shift to a mask optional policy.
The Minutes, at the Studio 54 theater, becomes the second production – following American Buffalo – to extend the mask mandate through their closing nights. (American Buffalo at Circle in the Square closed July 10.)
According to recent reports, six of the 11 cast members of The Minutes were out sick with Covid in mid-June.
The mask optional policy was announced by The Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, earlier this month. The new policy allows individual productions to set their own protocols.

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.
Letts’ latest work received overwhelmingly strong notices from critics. In a rave review, Naveen Kumar (Variety) calls the play a “cunning,” “sensational,” and “astonishing feat” handled with “brilliant finesse.” He applauds Letts for penning this “thrilling...

Tracy Letts’ The Minutes would be one of the most thrilling new plays on Broadway this season even if recent real-life events hadn’t made it seem as uncanny as it is funny and, ultimately, disarming. The Minutes – there are a brisk 90 of them in all – begins as one thing and ends up quite another, and every step along the way is so finely rendered that we’re too busy savoring the moment to see what’s waiting just ahead.
Featuring an impeccable cast headed by Noah Reid – the Schitt’s Creek star makes a wonderful Broadway debut here – The Minutes reunites playwright and cast member Letts with his August: Osage County director Anna D. Shapiro, and together they find once again the eccentric, perfect balance of laugh-out-loud humor, dark undercurrents and emotional violence that made the prize-winning August unforgettable.

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Bridget Everett brings such warmth to the screen,” Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, said in a statement, “It’s been an absolute joy to see audiences share a sense of belonging with this ensemble. The Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes is delaying its performance dates by two weeks this spring. The play, starring Schitt’s Creek actor Noah Reid, Letts, Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller and others, will now begin previews at Studio 54 on April 2, with opening night set for April 17.
The previous dates were about two weeks earlier.
Though the production has not indicated a reason for the delay, other shows have initiated similar spring delays due to the recent Omicron surge and its impact on rehearsal schedules, among other things.
The Minutes had already begun previews in spring 2020 when the Covid pandemic shutdown hit. At the time, the play was staged at the Cort Theatre. A planned renovation prompted the production’s move to the Studio 54 venue.
Also during the production’s hiatus, original star Armie Hammer withdrew amidst sexual misconduct allegations. Reid was later cast in the role.

In the new series “Somebody Somewhere,” Bridget Everett’s character isn’t pleased when her friend Joel (Jeff Hiller), a gay man having a crisis, shares his vision board. “Dream all you want, Joel, but this is the future,” she declares, gesturing at the beige room around her to indicate the world they’re doomed to inhabit. “We’re in our 40s. And it hasn’t happened yet, has it? It hasn’t happened for you, it hasn’t happened for me — and that’s because it’s not going to happen.”
It’s a moment of nihilism on a comedy that finds a way to grace only after establishing pain at its heart. Here, Everett — a Kansas-born stand-up and cabaret artist known for her appearances on “Inside Amy Schumer” — plays Sam, a version of herself had she never been discovered. Sam has a powerful singing voice she almost can...
