Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. The highly anticipated blockbuster is a hit with critics and audiences alike, with the critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reading, “Carving out a new era for ‘The Planet of the Apes’ with lovable characters and rich visuals, ‘Kingdom’ doesn’t take the crown as best of the franchise but handily justifies its continued reign.

The failure of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to kick on and repeat the exploits it once made fueled concerns about Disney Studios’ outlook. The last thing you want is for your leading franchise to drop the ball. But the studio can put the ghosts of the MCU to bed (for now at least) and celebrate a success that acts as a much-needed succor to the team – the blockbuster opening week of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Henry Cavill leaving franchises midway is not something new. The English actor had already left many fans teary eyed when he left the role of Superman in the DC Extended Universe. So when his ardent fans heard that he would also be bidding adieu to The Witcher after giving them three fantastic seasons, it didn’t come as a shock to many. But they were disappointed. And a report suggests that the show is all set to come to an end after Season 5. And Freya Allen couldn’t be more relieved.

Planet of the Apes trilogy, helmed by directors Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves, is well regarded as one of the best trilogies in modern cinema. The new installment to the franchise, directed by The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball, is set several generations after Caesar’s reign. Now, apes are the dominant species and live harmoniously, whilst humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. We follow young ape Noa, who undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and future, under the reign of a new tyrannical ape leader. Successfully managing to pay homage to the trilogy whilst delivering something entirely new and standing on its own two feet, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a worthy continuation of the franchise. The performances are great, the visuals are jaw-dropping and the story, whilst taking its time,...

[Editor’s note: Massive spoilers for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” below.]
Apes rule in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” kicking off director Wes Ball’s post-Caesar saga 300 years later. Wētā FX leveraged its tech from the previous “Apes” trilogy and the Oscar-winning “Avatar: The Way of Water” for greater photorealism in their performance capture animation and VFX. This is important because the apes are chattier, and there are more CG action set pieces (33 minutes are entirely digital — a franchise first). It adds up to possibly earning the franchise the VFX Oscar that it’s been denied.
After achieving great on-set facial capture in the rain and snow for director Matt Reeves’ “Dawn” and “War” films, Wētā embraced more expansive environments for “Kingdom” along with more active and expressive apes. In the film, simians have begun developing their own civilization in villages spread throughout the overgrown Pacific Northwest, with decrepit skyscrapers in the distance.

Many generations after the events of the last film, the society left behind means apes now rule, and humans are the sub species. Noa (Owen Teague as a full CGI ape) is part of a tribe who raise birds for hunting and lives in peace. That peace is upended by Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), King of the Coastal Apes, who accumulates power by destroying other tribes and using the human’s old war technology against his species. When Noa’s tribe becomes victims of destruction, the young ape seeks his revenge with the help of a evolved human named Nova (Freya Allan).

The majority of people currently alive today have never known a world without the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. French author Pierre Boulle first published his novel "La Planète des singes" in 1963, and the world has been fascinated with an alternate future where our own hubris have destroyed humans, and highly intelligent apes are now the dominant species on Earth. "Maze Runner" and future "The Legend of Zelda" director Wes Ball is the latest to sit in the director's chair, delivering "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," the tenth film overall in this legacy series.

The spectacular "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" (read our review here) goes against the grain of one particular blockbuster trend these days: there are no extra scenes during the credits to set up the next installment of the long-running sci-fi franchise. Yes, the story does have a few dangling narrative threads that can be followed up with another movie, but none of them require any further teeing up. However, that doesn't mean "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" credits are without a tease for something in the franchise's future.
If you happen to stick around to the very end of the rolling credits for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," not only will you have paid respect to the hundreds of people who brought this film to life, especially the visual effects artists delivering...

When it was first announced that the Planet of the Apes franchise was going to get the reboot treatment back in the now-Jurassic era of 2011, you could feel a familiar cynicism kick in: Great, another recognizable intellectual property getting trotted out for a quick cash grab, just in time for a corporate quarterly report. We’d finally washed the ashy taste of that ill-advised Tim Burton remake from 2001 out of mouths, and now Warners was going back to the ’70s pop culture well, ready to ransack musty nostalgia from chimpan-a to chimpan-z.

Picking up three centuries after War for the Planet of the Apes, the 2017 conclusion of Matt Reeves’s trilogy, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at long last brings the setting of the reboot franchise in line with Franklin J. Schaffner’s original Planet of the Apes. Here, the descendants of the first hyper-intelligent primates now rule the world and have established solid civilizations, while the nearly extinct human species has turned feral.
With humans reduced to a ragtag population of wild animals, conflict is now mostly evident between rival groups of apes. One such collision occurs at the start of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with one clan overrun and pressed into servitude by Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), an ambitious bonobo styling himself as the first king of apes. Only one member of the smaller group, the young chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague), eludes death or capture,...

Planet of the Apes is one of the longest-running IPs in Hollywood. The franchise is gearing up for another run at the box office with the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie has been directed by Wes Ball. It is set to be a continuation of the previous films in the series that were directed by Matt Reeves and Rupert Wyatt.
Although Reeves has not returned to the franchise for the latest movie, Wes Ball made it clear that he has a great deal of admiration for what the filmmaker has achieved within the series already. In fact, Ball had words of condemnation for the Oscars committee for failing to recognize Reeves’ movies for their special effects artistry.

I love the Planet of the Apes franchise. Everything from the original 1968 movie to the short-lived TV series to the excellent Apes trilogy starring Andy Serkis; hell, I’ve even got a soft spot for Tim Burton’s reboot. The next installment of the franchise is just over the horizon, and the audience at CinemaCon got to witness an exclusive sneak peek of thirteen minutes of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. I am officially jealous.

A young woman finds the pub she’s inherited is home to a 400-year-old she-devil, but few of the ensuing jump scares will surprise you
The extravagant absurdity of this chiller from screenwriter Lorcan Reilly and director Alberto Corredor might conceivably get it an audience. There are some interesting touches, but horror fans might well feel that it’s just too similar to the recent and frankly superior Australian film Talk to Me – though it must be said that Talk to Me was made well after Reilly and Corredor’s original 2017 short, with the same high concept, on which this is based.

Something evil lurks in the basement in the first trailer for Alberto Corredor’s unsettling new horror film, Baghead.
We’ve had some stellar horror films in 2023, but it’s time to cast our eyes to the future. We’re already looking forward to Imaginary and Night Swim, but Alberto Corredor’s Baghead looks very intriguing indeed.
Take a look at the first Baghead trailer below.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Following the death of her father, a young woman (Allen) inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.”
Baghead comes from the producers of It and Barbarian and there is definitely a bit of Barbarian’s DNA present in the Baghead trailer. Something rather evil was lurking in the bowels of a house in Zach Cregger’s hit horror as well.

Nobody needs a refresher course on just how influential the original "Planet of the Apes" movies were, but the most recent trilogy of movies has become a popular pick among cinephiles as one of the most underappreciated blockbuster franchises in recent years. The incredible VFX work feels seamless, Andy Serkis' performance as the ape leader Caesar is nothing short of Oscar-worthy, and the dystopian story threaded throughout the trilogy stands tall as a fantastic addition to the lore of the sci-fi series. So when word first came down that "The Maze Runner" director Wes Ball would attempt to pick up where they left off with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," fans seemed torn between excitement and healthy skepticism.
Consider any fears long gone in the wake of the film's first teaser trailer, which hinted at another epic adventure taking place generations after the events of "War for the Planet of the Apes.

The marketing for Disney and 20th Studios’ “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” got off to a strong start with 75 million views in 24 hours across platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X/Twitter and more, Variety has learned. Social engagement for the trailer came in with 72,000 mentions in 24 hours, boosted by 11,000 TikTok comments and a top 10 trend on X. The studio launched a trailer tease the day before the official clip’s drop, and that earned 25 million views in 24 hours. All in all, “Kingdom” content earned a combined 100 million views during the film’s marketing launch period.
While the full “Kingdom” trailer debuted to a sturdy 75 million views in 24 hours, that number of course does not compete with such recent Disney blockbusters as “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (172 million views), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (148 million) and “The Little Mermaid” (104 million views). Thomasin McKenzie has a doozy of a day, the kind she’ll never forget in the first trailer for “Eileen.” Set during a grim 1964 Massachusetts winter, the William Oldroyd-directed noir concerns a young and impressionable secretary who becomes understandably enraptured by a new counselor (Anne Hathaway) at the prison where she works. The trailer doesn’t spell out what diabolical doings will be done, but the implication is Hathaway goes full femme fatale.
Alongside its two top-billed stars, “Eileen” features Shea Whigham, Siobhan Fallon Hogan and Owen Teague (who will soon headline “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” alongside Freya Allen).
Based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name and produced by Fifth Season, “Eileen” debuted to positive reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Neon picked up the picture and plans to give it a year end awards season push. Audiences can expect a...

Spoiler Alert: This recap contains spoilers for “The Witcher” Season 3, Part 2, now streaming on Netflix.
“The Witcher” fans knew Season 3 would be bittersweet. It’s the final installment of the Netflix fantasy series before Henry Cavill, who has starred as famed monster hunter Geralt of Rivia since Season 1, is replaced by Liam Hemsworth in an unexpected shake-up.
Beginning in Season 4, Hemsworth will be donning Geralt’s swords, Witcher medallions and long, white locks, while the rest of the cast remains intact — except, of course, for those characters who died in Season 3, Part 2’s bloody battles.
Since the recasting was announced, fans have been wondering how the switch from Cavill to Hemsworth will happen. Would Hemsworth appear in the Season 3 finale? Would some kind of spell change Geralt’s Cavill-esque appearance into something more Hemsworth-ian? How would Geralt’s relationships with Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), Ciri (Freya Allen) and Jaskier (Joey Batey) be affected?...

Anya Chalotra is beautiful, even if we don’t count the violet eyes that she sports for the role of Yennefer of Vengerberg in the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher. The third season shows Yennefer seeking redemption for the sins she committed in the previous season and slowly overcoming an obsession that had sent her into a spiral in the past. Yennefer slowly grows into the role of a mother for Freya Allen’s character, Cirilla of Cintra, but it’s a process that takes its fair time. Here, we explore how Yennefer came to be a motherly figure for Geralt’s ward, the white-haired Ciri.
Perhaps the ugliest child in the town of Vengerberg was the hunchbacked girl with a misshapen jaw and a severely bent frame named Yennefer. Hated and sold like mere cattle to a mystical woman in exchange for a few coins by her father, Yennefer...

Anybody who loves sci-fi tends to keep at least one eye on the future. That's kind of the whole point, isn't it? Of course, this applies to more than the technologies, cultures, and politics that drive our favorite stories -- it also goes for the stories themselves.
Luckily, sci-fi movie fans have a lot to look forward to in the next few years. Many of Hollywood's upcoming releases will come as no real shock to most, including the small avalanche of "Star Wars" projects on the way or the imminent entries in the nigh-unstoppable MCU. Others will likely be more of a surprise: Films such as Bong Joon-ho's "Mickey 17" and Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" are bound to make serious waves in the genre, for example.
Meanwhile, a significant number of imminent sci-fi movies are surprising not because they're unexpected -- in fact, as franchise entries, most of...

This post contains spoilers for Netflix's Witcherverse and Andrzej Sapkowski's "The Witcher" novel series.
Andrzej Sapkowski's novel series "The Witcher" has spawned a string of stellar adaptations. We have three video games that expand greatly on Sapkowski's novel, with "The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt" emerging as unparalleled, along with an entire comic book series based on the games which leaned heavily on wholly original stories within the universe. When Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Declan de Barra took it upon themselves to adapt a television series based on the novels, they took a hybridized approach. Although the meat of the storyline was taken directly from different plotlines in the novel series, fresh threads, and new character facets were introduced to create an interesting world with beasts and monster slayers.

Netflix released the teaser for the third season of “The Witcher,” starring Henry Cavill as the protagonist, Geralt of Rivia along with Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Freya Allen as Cirilla, among others. The primary antagonist in the teaser is the Wild Hunt, and we’ll get into that in a moment, but the series also presents a few new characters aside from bringing back some older ones. The teaser looks great, replete with a gothic, dark, and sinister tone, as the fans gear up to see their hero, Henry Cavill, don the Witcher armor once more to take on monsters, both human and non-human. So, without any further ado, here’s a detailed breakdown of the teaser.
The teaser starts with Geralt opening the door of what looks like a dimly lit cave and taking a swig of the cat potion, giving his eyes the typical demonic widened pupils.

"Planet of the Apes" is one of the most legendary and enduring sci-fi franchises we have. The original 1968 film that started it all, which was co-written by "The Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling, is still regarded as one of the finest entries in the genre ever created. But a new era was launched with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" in 2011, introducing us to Andy Serkis as Caesar and launching a new trilogy. Matt Reeves took over with "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "War for the Planet of the Apes," which closed Caesar's story but paved the way for a bright future. Now, that future is nearly upon us.
Next up will be director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," a continuation of the franchise under Disney, thanks to the merger with Fox in 2019. But what is this new installment going to deliver?...

In the wake of Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves’ trilogy that began with Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011 and came to end with 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Studios has officially announced Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, a brand new movie that takes place “many years after” the events of War for the Planet of the Apes.
The new movie starts production next month and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allen, and Peter Macon, with Wes Ball (director of all three Maze Runner films) on board to direct.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will release in theaters May 24, 2024.
Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison wrote the script.
