It was announced this week that director Wes Ball will be helming a live-action feature film based on the Nintendo video game franchise "The Legend of Zelda." The original 1986 "Legend of Zelda" game took place in a fantasy kingdom called Hyrule, which had become overrun by monsters after the evil pig-like overlord Ganon kidnapped Princess Zelda. Players controlled an elf-like hero named Link as he traversed dungeons, collecting a growing array of weapons and seeking pieces of the Triforce, a triangular widget of ineffable power. It was Nintendo's riff on the high fantasy genre, taking cues from "Dungeons & Dragons" and J.R.R. Tolkien.
In the 37 years since the game's release, it has become a massive property unto itself, spawning 19 sequels and a 1989 animated segment that ran as part of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." It would have seemed logical to have made a "Legend of Zelda" feature film by now,...

"Why are you here?" "I'm here for my fate." Whoa!! Hell yes, this is awesome. Evenveil is an incredible fantasy short film made by a company called Rainfall Films, written & directed by Sam Balcomb. A warrior in exile, bearing a fated weapon, enters the ruins of a dead city to unlock a mysterious power known as the Red Veil. It's a fantasy epic packed into 10 mins - better than most feature films released this year. "Evenveil is a proof-of-concept fantasy short from director Sam Balcomb and Rainfall Films. The conceptualization of the environments and characters began in 2020, as Rainfall started developing new techniques for world-building visual effects and implementation with live action." The short stars Alexis Peters, Aria Song, Nick Apostolina, Dawson Mullen, Gregory Lee Kenyon, & Ralph Lister. Of course, this is part of a "a larger, sprawling narrative" that they hope to develop further. I'm in!! The visual quality,...

Movie adaptations of video games are hit or miss. Actually — let’s be honest, they are usually terrible. Yet, every now and again, someone will create a stunning fan film that makes you wonder what the hell is wrong with Hollywood? Metroid: The Sky Calls by Rainfall Films is definitely one of those shorts that puts Hollywood to shame. Director Sam Balcomb has turned Nintendo’s classic Metroid series into a stylish and slick 70s sci-fi flick favoring exploration and isolation over action spectacle. The atmosphere of the film is enthralling and the visuals, stunning. If this were to come out as a full length feature, I would gladly donate via Kickstarter.
The project comes from the same three-man team that created the Legend of Zelda movie trailer for IGN back on April Fools in 2008 and stars Jessica Chobot (Nerdist) and America Young (Halo 5). In the span of eleven minutes,...

Back in 2013, Rainfall Films made headlines with a very impressive short film focusing on Wonder Woman (who, unlike back then, will finally reach the big screen in just two years from now). Now, the group are back with Metroid: The Sky Falls, a very cool effort which was written and directed by Sam Balcomb that

A great-looking unofficial Metroid film, The Sky Falls, has appeared online. Take a look within...
Chances are you'll be seeing the short film below on a laptop or smart phone, but we'd argue its natural home is on a big screen with an equally humongous sound system. Unofficially based on Nintendo's classic Metroid, Rainfall Films' short takes a distinctly Kubrickian approach to the sci-fi property, from its 2001: A Space Odyssey-style title typography and opening sequence to its moody sonic landscape.
As Samus journeys deeper into a mysterious vessel, it then begins to take on a decidedly Alien-like sense of the unknown - Alien being another film influenced by Kubrick, of course.
Directed by Sam Balcomb and starring Jessica Chobot, Metroid: The Sky Falls is a remarkably polished and atmospheric movie. With Nintendo planning its own foray into feature filmmaking this could - who knows? - give...

Rainfall Films, the company behind that memorable live-action 2013 "Wonder Woman" fan short film that looked like many wish the character could be portrayed as on screen, has done it again for another franchise.
Sam Balcomb has penned and directed "Metroid: The Sky Calls," a new eleven-minute fan film inspired by the classic Nintendo video game series "Metroid". Jessica Chobot and America Young star in the short which is less action-oriented than the game and has more of a sci-fi/dramatic focus.
It is also not a direct adaptation of a title in the long-running series, and comes a few months after Nintendo revealed it was reconsidering its stance on feature film adaptations which they have been opposed to for two decades.

Jessica Chobot is no stranger to sci-fi video games. She did lend her voice-acting skills to news reporter Diana Allers in Mass Effect 3, after all.
Her latest role is a bit different, though, because it has her actual face (and not just her digital face, like in Mass Effect 3) talking to the camera from the inside of a CGI Samus Aran suit.
Directed by Sam Balcomb, Metroid: The Sky Calls comes from Rainfall Films, a three-man production company founded by Balcomb. You can watch the full 12-minute movie above.
"The classic Nintendo franchise, Metroid, envisioned through the lens of 60s-70s science fiction cinema such as 2001, Alien, and Solaris: this was the concept for Rainfall's most recent production," says Rainfall Films on the YouTube description.
"Instead of using a modern approach, a style was developed more in tune with the themes that inspired the first Metroid game in 1986: isolation,...
