Emma Thompson is Team Finland all the way and she wants you to know it. In an emotional letter shared with local newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the actor detailed her experience working on Brian Kirk’s upcoming action thriller “The Fisherwoman.” Set in Minnesota, the film will see two-time Oscar winner as a widow who, while trapped in a blizzard, interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager.
“They had no snow [in Minnesota] owing to the changing climate, [so] the decision was taken to shoot all the exteriors in Finland. I had no idea how lucky I was but upon arrival in Koli, greeted by the piney, snow-laden sentinels that guard that magical hillside, I started to sense what a huge privilege and adventure this was to become,” she wrote.
The shoot wasn’t easy, admitted Thompson, who “was often quite scared and often doubted [her] capacity to do the work.” She also executive produces the film.

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

Even if you walked away from "The Super Mario Bros." disappointed in the flimsy story, there's one element that succeeded in spite of the movie's shortcomings: Jack Black as the diabolical villain Bowser. The "School of Rock" star brought his magnificent voice to the spike-shelled bad guy who has always been tormenting Mario, Luigi, Peach, the Mushroom Kingdom, and beyond. Black even got to belt out a ballad about Bowser's love for Peach in a scene-stealing musical sequence that is easily the best part of the entire movie. Now, he's gearing up to join another promising video game movie.
Deadline reports that Warner Bros. Pictures, Vertigo, and Legendary are close to starting production on the "Minecraft" movie, adapting the hit sandbox world video game from Mojang Studios, and Jack Black is taking one of the lead roles alongside "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa.

“What We Do in the Shadows” star Matt Berry is in talks to join Warner Bros.’ live-action adaptation of the hit video game “Minecraft,” set to be released in spring 2025.
Details on the film’s plot and Berry’s role remain secret. Developed by Swedish game designer Markus “Notch” Persson and released in 2011, “Minecraft” is an open-ended sandbox game in which players can mine resources and craft items, using them to create new structures and fight off hostile creatures.
More than a decade later, “Minecraft” remains one of the most popular and lucrative video games on the market, with fans creating community servers and conventions to share their creations. Microsoft purchased the game and its dev company Mojang for $2.5 billion and has turned it into a multimedia franchise with spinoff games and merchandise.

Exclusive: Doctor Sleep filmmaker Mike Flanagan has pitched a feature version of Clayface over at the studio several sources tell Deadline, however, no word on greenlight yet — and the studio has not said ‘No’. There are no offers and no deals. Though typically a DC supervillain, in the Flanagan pic, should it move forward, he wouldn’t be a bad guy (so we hear).
Word is that Flanagan and his Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy had a meeting with DC Bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran. Flangan, we understand, wasn’t pitching the character to be part of Matt Reeves’ DC elseworld, The Batman 2 set for an Oct. 3, 2025 release date.
That said, other sources are telling us that scripts are constantly changing, and that Clayface is a big addition to Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2. Let’s wait until the dust settles here and something moves forward. It remains to be...

Fresh off a standout performance in director Sophie Hyde's affecting drama, "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande," Emma Thompson is set to dramatically switch things up. The esteemed actress will soon play the role of "a widowed fisherman" who becomes involved in a teen's kidnapping in the action thriller "The Fisherwoman." Announced via Variety in early February, the film will be directed by Brian Kirk, who's known mostly for his work on TV shows including "Luther," "Dexter," and "Game of Thrones." And while little is known about the project at this time, it's intriguing if only for Thompson, who continues to make diverse and interesting role choices.
The actress has always sought out challenging projects. When asked for her advice to up-and-coming actors, she told BAFTA back in 2013, "Make your choices carefully and don't do things just because they might pay well, do the things that really interest you.

Move over Liam. Put that gun down, Gerry. There's a new action star in town. And her name is Emma Thompson. Proving that she can do anything she darn well pleases, Thompson is starring in action thriller The Fisherwoman.
Brian Kirk is on to direct, working from a script by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb. The story will see Thompson as a widowed fisherwoman who, while trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard, interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager and soon finds she is the young victim’s only hope.
"Dame Emma Thompson is a phenomenally talented artist and the perfect incarnation of our film’s titular character," says Jon Berg, president of production at Stampede Ventures, which is putting up some of the financing for the movie. "We couldn’t be more honored and excited to see her embody a character that shares her unique strength, grit and intelligence."

Houston, we have an ensemble. The plucky new comedy “Space Cadet,” from Stampede Ventures, has added more star power to a fleet led by the previously announced Emma Roberts.
While character details are under wraps, Gabrielle Union will join Roberts in the film about a Florida party girl who turns out to be the only hope for the NASA space program, after a fluke puts her in training with other candidates. They may have better resumes, but not her smarts, heart and moxie. Liz. W. Garcia is directing form her own script, which we pray will feel like “Legally Blonde” in space.
Tom Hopper also comes aboard with Colombian pop star Sebastián Yatra (Spain’s “The Voice Kids”), sketch veteran David Foley (“The Kids in the Hall”) and Desi Lydic (“The Daily Show”).
Production will begin next week. Greg Silverman and Jon Berg will produce on behalf of Stampede Ventures,...

“Batman and Robin will never die!” Those triumphant words, spoken in 2008’s Batman #676 by Grant Morrison and Tony S. Daniel, may have occurred in the comics, but they could apply to the movies as well. Case in point, despite numerous claims that he’s done with playing Batman after a cameo in The Flash, a recent Instagram post from Jason Momoa indicates that Ben Affleck will return as the Dark Knight for next year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
This, of course, raises several questions about the current state of the DC movie universe. After all, Robert Pattinson starred in The Batman just earlier this year, and Michael Keaton has been touted as the primary Batman in The Flash and Batgirl. Does the reunion of Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Momoa’s Arthur Curry mean that the Snyderverse has indeed been restored?

For some, the phrase “Release the Snyder Cut” has been a rallying cry for artistic integrity. They use the phrase to push back against mega-corporation Warner Brothers, demanding that director Zack Snyder be given the opportunity to complete his vision for DC Comics heroes the Justice League, which he began with Man of Steel in 2012. For them, the phrase rejects the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League, which was completed by Joss Whedon after a family tragedy pulled Snyder away from the production.
But for others, “Release the Snyder Cut” is a threat, a demand to silence all criticisms of Snyder’s work and a punishment for perceived threats to the director’s films. Victims of online harassment campaigns have ranged from Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, who produced the theatrical cut of Justice League, to director Adam Wingard, whose movie Godzilla vs. Kong appeared on HBO Max two weeks after...

Zack Snyder was becoming increasingly agitated. Over the course of several weeks in the spring of 2020, the director repeatedly demanded that the names of two producers – Geoff Johns and Jon Berg – be removed from his upcoming re-cut of Justice League, the DC superhero movie that had tanked back in 2017. His high-powered CAA agent began calling Warner Bros. daily to check on why the pair hadn’t been excised from the list of credits. Simultaneously, Snyder’s wife Deborah, another producer on the film, started pressing an executive in the studio...
