Always one to balk in the face of convention, RZA this fall will turn the orchestral concept of “chamber music” — small ensembles playing ornate works — into “chambers music”: a symphony orchestra interpreting Wu-Tang Clan’s blockbuster 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) live onstage. The performances will take place at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre on Nov. 7, 8, and 9 — the last date of which marks the album’s 30th anniversary. The gigs are billed with a mouthful of a title: “36 Chambers of Shaolin and a Ballet Through Mud.” On Instagram,...

Key Art for Mixtape, streaming on Paramount+, 2023. Paramount+ announced that Mixtape, a new documentary exploring how the creation of mixtapes launched hip hop into mainstream culture, will premiere exclusively on the service Tuesday, August 1 in the U.S. and Canada and Wednesday, August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America and Brazil, with further international markets to follow later in the year. Mixtape is the story of hip hop refusing to take no for an answer. Before radio play, the internet, and social media, there were mixtapes. DJs were tastemakers, trendsetters and creators of the sound that became the biggest musical genre on the planet. The importance of mixtapes goes well beyond the tapes themselves. Mixtapes were a form of currency and a signifier that someone was “in the know” and had their ear to the streets. The culture was too strong to be stopped, and the artists were too...

Dmx’s first foray into major-label hip-hop was a failure. In the early 1990s, he released “Born Loser,” a loping anti-anthem for the down-and-out: “Even when I was little, nothing went my way/I got beat up and chased home from school every day,” Dmx rapped. The single’s tone turns defiant — “Since I was born with no hope, I ain’t got nothing to lose” — but that didn’t help the track’s commercial fortunes.

She’s no stranger to controversy, and when Nicki Minaj got a marriage proposal from DJ Khaled last week, rumors began to fly.
Thankfully, the “Roman Holiday” rapper told Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex that the whole ordeal was actually a promotional stunt.
Nicki explained, "I was shocked just like the rest of the world. I was cracking up laughing with the rest of the world 'cause Khaled is a master at what he does."
"It was just another way for him to kinda give the world a glimpse on the feeling of this record. Nobody in my real life took it seriously. Everybody just hit me like, 'Lol. Yo, Khaled is crazy.'"
Minaj also shared that romance won’t likely ever be in the air for them. "Khaled is my brother and Khaled was not serious with that damn proposal, ya'll. Please let it go. He was kidding. He's not attracted to me,...

Nicki Minaj finally has an answer to DJ Khaled's impromptu video proposal: You're joking, right? After staying mum on the subject since the famed DJ asked for the hip-hopster's hand in marriage last week, Minaj called into New York's Hot 97 radio station on Monday and laughed off the whole thing as one big prank. "I was shocked just like the rest of the world and I was cracking up laughing with the rest of the world, 'cause DJ Khaled is a master at what he does," Minaj told Funkmaster Flex. She continued: "Khaled is my brother and Khaled was not serious with that damn proposal, y'all. Please let it go. He was kidding…He's not attracted to me, he...

Four days after DJ Khaled proposed to Nicki Minaj in a video for MTV News, the ‘Starships’ rapper finally responded. Did she say yes? Did she say no? Keep reading to find out!
DJ Khaled laid his heart on the line on July 25, proposing to Nicki Minaj in an amazing, heartfelt video for MTV News. Nicki, 30, finally responded with an answer during an interview with Hot 97′s Funkmaster Flex on July 29.
Nicki Minaj Responds To DJ Khaled’s Marriage Proposal
Like many fans, Nicki didn’t take DJ Khaled’s proposal too seriously.
I was shocked just like the rest of the world and I was cracking up laughing with the rest of the world ’cause Khaled is a master at what he does.
Calling Khaled, 37, a master seems appropriate because the rapper managed to promote his upcoming album Suffering From Success during the proposal. In the video, the rapper...

Is Nicki Minaj ready to be Mrs. DJ Khaled? Not exactly. Speaking with Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex July 29, the "Starships" rapper, 30, finally piped up about Khaled's emotional, out-of-nowhere video proposal from July 25, in which he (earnestly?) asked for Minaj's hand in marriage. "I was shocked just like the rest of the world," said Minaj. "I was cracking up laughing with the rest of the world 'cause Khaled is a master at what he does." (Khaled insisted to Us Weekly over the weekend that he was, [...]...

It has been almost a year since Hot 97 D.J. Peter Rosenberg said some rude things about Nicki Minaj's "Starships," causing Nicki to drop out of Summer Jam and spawning a weeklong debate about the definition of hip-hop. (For a refresher, please revisit Nicki's interview with Funkmaster Flex, which was never-ending and amazing.) So as an anniversary present — and just in time for this year's Summer Jam — Nicki agreed to a sit-down with Rosenberg. The result was not nearly as fun as the Flex call-in, but they made up, kind of, and surely paved the way for a surprise Minaj appearance on Sunday. Also, "I just don't know your résumé" is a funny thing to say to someone sitting right in front of you.

TLC's failed reality show "Starter Wives Confidential" -- featuring the exes of 50 Cent, Lamar Odom, Dmx, and Funkmaster Flex -- was pulled off the air Only because the Ratings Sucked ... despite speculations otherwise. You'll recall, the reality show was cancelled a few days after its Jan. 29 debut. Many believed it was due to a slew of problems plaguing the show -- including 50 Cent's outspoken dislike of his ex's participation. Even one of the stars, Monica...

Only a few days after its January 29 debut, it appears to be a “grand opening, grand closing” for TLC’s new series, “Starter Wives Confidential.”
According to cast member Monica Jospeh-Taylor, the reality show, which followed the lives of celebrity exes, will now air exclusively online for unspecified reasons. Taylor, who is the ex-wife of DJ Funkmaster Flex, expressed her thoughts on the abrupt change via her personal blog.
It’s no secret Starter Wives Confidential was plagued by legal inquiries and possible lawsuits from the beginning. Starting with Shanequa Tompkins being missing from all the episodes, her ex 50 cent allegedly had an agreement or contract with her of some sort that either prevented or made it difficult for her to partake in the show. I know before taping even began I was questioned about my posts relating to anyone connected with Lamar Odom. Luckily TLC had no control over...

In the world of celebrity spouse reality shows, it doesn't get any uglier than TLC's new offering.
"Starter Wives Confidential," premiering Tuesday, Jan. 29, looks at seven women who stood by their men through thick and thin -- until success, fame, infidelity or violence ended their relationships. Unfortunately, the only thing that stinks worse than the show's dirty laundry may be the show itself.
The ringleader is TV personality and media entrepreneur Monica Joseph-Taylor, estranged spouse of hip-hop DJ Funkmaster Flex. She organizes a cadre of women in similar situations to appear on the show: Zakia Baum, ex-girlfriend of rapper Maino; Cheryl Caruso, ex-wife of convicted mobster Phil Caruso; Josie Harris, ex-girlfriend of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.; Liza Morales, ex-girlfriend of NBA player Lamar Odom, who's currently married to Khloe Kardashian; Tashera Simmons, ex of rapper Dmx; and Shaniqua Tompkins, ex-girlfriend of rapper 50 Cent.
In the pilot episode, Joseph-Taylor gathers three...

Rick Ross and Young Jeezy have been involved in a fight backstage at the Bet Hip Hop Awards, reports TMZ. The rappers are said to have "started pushing and shoving each other" in the parking lot at the venue last night (September 29) before bodyguards and security stepped in and the police were called. DJ and MTV host Funkmaster Flex - who also attended the awards - first broke news of the scuffle online. "Jeezy and Rick Ross just had words backstage!! Pushing and shoving!!!" he tweeted. "Beef just spread to the parking lot!!!" he added minutes later, before suggesting that a firearm may have been involved. "Shortly after 7:15 pm Saturday, a fight broke out in the parking lot at the Atlanta Civic Center between two groups," confirmed a spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department. "Officers on scene responded to break (more)...

Looks like the feud ain't over yet between rappers Young Jeezy and Rick Ross. According to numerous tweets from Funkmaster Flex (and others), the two rappers got into an altercation backstage at the Bet Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, which allegedly spilled out into the parking lot. The feud between the two dates back in August 2010, when Jeezy released "Death B4 Dishonor"—which contains lines that were supposedly disses directed toward Ross. Tonight, though, things apparently got physical. "Jeezy and Rick Ross just had words backstage!!" DJ and MTV host Funkmaster Flex tweeted. "Pushing and shoving!!!" "Beef just spread to the parking...
