Last April, Sphere Media took the Canadian Screen Awards by storm with 22 awards for its scripted content, including a record 12 wins for the historical Black drama “The Porter” and seven for queer comedy “Sort Of.” It was a big night for Canada’s third-largest independent producer, and in particular for Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere’s president of scripted and feature films for English Canada.
Previously, Kawaja spent decades heading up Sienna Films with her business partner, Julia Sereny, helming several award-winning projects like “Cardinal,” “Trickster” and “One Dead Indian.” The duo sold the company to Kew Media Group in 2017 and in 2020, Montreal-based Datsit Sphere snatched it up when Kew was placed into receivership. Last year, Sphere restructured and rebranded under a single banner with the intention of streamlining content creation, production and distribution.
Now, it’s full speed ahead.

Jordan Canning isn't new to the Toronto International Film Festival -- her short film "Seconds" won the fest's Rbc Emerging Filmmakers Competition in 2012. But "We Were Wolves" marks the first time the promising Canadian writer/director took a feature to Tiff.
Shot over the course of two weeks at their cinematographer's family cottage in northern Ontario, the indie drama was a labour of love for the small cast and crew, who found themselves handling multiple jobs, everything from craft services to lugging gear around the isolated island they shot on. Peter Mooney ("Rookie Blue") stars as Nick in the film, a responsible young father trying to settle affairs after his dad's death, when his estranged, slacker older brother Danny (co-writer Steve Cochrane) shows up out of the blue with his own ideas on what to do about their father's cottage. Longstanding grudges and years of resentment bubble up over that weekend,...

The Chase
Written by Philip Yordan
Directed by Arthur Ripley
U.S.A., 1946
*A fair warning to readers: those sensitive to spoilers had best watch the film under review before reading the article. To properly dive into its themes and story, major plot points will be revealed.
Surprises in movies are a great gift the storytellers can offer viewers to wake them from the state of comfort, or boredom depending whom one asks, which sets in when plot points are too familiar and the dramatic beats too predictable. For some it can be a chore to get through just as it may offer the right type of simple escapism for others. Sometimes, however, the ingredients need be shaken and stirred. In an amusing case of coincidence, this week’s column entry, the 1946 film The Chase, arrives only weeks after Steven Soderbergh’s supposed final theatrical feature, Side Effects, opened in theatres.

Alliance Films will release the dramatic thriller Afghan Luke into theatres September, 2011. The film involves two journalists sent to the remote country of Afghanistan in search of a story on Canadian snipers gone bad. What they find is a story on hashish production instead. Then, they get too close to their subject and mayhem ensues, as suggested by the film's first poster. Nick Stahl (Mirrors 2), Colin Cunningham ("Falling Skies") and Torrance Coombs ("The Tudors") are some of the principal cast members starring and those who enjoy war torn thrillers can have a closer look at this title when it releases in a limited fashion through Alliance Films late in September.

I don't know what's with Newfoundlanders, but they seem to not only enjoy making coming-of-age stories, but also excel in it. Obviously, Adriana Maggs's Grown Up Movie Star isn't perfect, but it sure has its charms.
Set in Newfoundland, a Canadian province in the Atlantic Ocean, the film is about coming out of the closet as much as it is about the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Ray (Shawn Doyle) is a former NHL player whose career ended after being convicted of drug trafficking. Now, he's back in his childhood town, has no sense of purposes and tries to raise his two daughters - Ruby (Tatiana Maslany) and Rose (Julia Kennedy) - in any possible way. In fact, Shawn's wife (Maggie Meyer) left him in order to make it big in Hollywood.
