Based on an initiative by Richard Branson and Peter Gabriel, Nelson Mandela announced the formation of The Elders in July 2007 in Johannesburg on the occasion of his 89th birthday. Members of The Elders are: Martti Ahtisaari, Kofi Annan, Ela Bhatt, Lakhdar Brahimi, Gro Brundtland, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Jimmy Carter, Graça Machel, Mary Robinson and Desmond Tutu (Chair).
The Elders are a group of global leaders, brought together by Nelson Mandela, who use their collective experience and influence to promote peace, justice and human rights worldwide.
They include the former holders of some of the world’s most important and demanding posts, and individuals with an extraordinary track record on peace-making, reconciliation and social change.
Independent of government and no longer holding public office, the Elders are helping tackle some of the world’s most intractable problems, through both private advocacy and public work.

Peter Gabriel first learned about former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in Rolling Stone. He doesn’t remember the exact date, but a 1975 article about Georgia’s Allman Brothers Band and their support for Carter’s presidential campaign is likely what caught his eye.
“I’ve always been interested in American politics, and I was fascinated to read that the Allman Brothers had played a critical role in getting some early funding for this ‘peanut farmer with principles,’” Gabriel reminisces on a recent Zoom call from his Real World Studios in Southwest England.

In the last seventy decades in the wake of the First and the Second World Wars, as nations united so as to prevent the scourge of war, and if not, to at least ameliorate its effects on the innocents, peacemaking became a full-time and hopefully, sacrosanct activity. But, as said, both the peacemakers and the peacekeepers seemed to somehow attract the worst from the people whom they sought to protect, with zealots of either side or other vested interests, gunning for them.
Mahatma Gandhi is the best example in the Indian context, over accusations that he was not mindful of the interests of his "own" people, and calling for amity at a time when a sort of "blood lust" seemed to have seized people. But, there are more examples of those who sought to solve problems in faraway lands, where they had no stake at all, and still went to pay for it.

Director Greg Barker doesn’t quite have the track record or the mystique of Werner Herzog, but he enters Herzogian territory with “Sergio,” his drama about United Nations diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello that premieres on Netflix on Friday.
Barker’s new “Sergio,” which stars “Narcos” star Wagner Moura as the celebrated Brazilian who worked for peace around the world for more than 30 years, is the second “Sergio” that the director has made, the first being his 2009 documentary. That puts Barker in the company of a small group of directors who’ve made a documentary about a subject, and then later adapted the same story into a narrative feature – among them Herzog with his 1997 documentary “Little Dieter Needs to Fly,” about Vietnam War Pow Dieter Dengler, and his 2006 feature “Rescue Dawn, which starred Christian Bale as Dengler; Dan Krauss with the 2013 doc and 2019 narrative features “The Kill Team”; and Fenton Bailey...

The Elders today called on Zimbabwe’s political leaders and all figures in authority to commit to a truly inclusive national dialogue and prioritise the economic and social needs of ordinary citizens over party politics, factionalism and self-interest.
Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders and former President of Ireland, and Graça Machel, Deputy Chair of The Elders and former Mozambican freedom fighter, visited Harare from 6-7 September. They met President Emmerson Mnangagwa for talks at State House, following on from their previous meeting in July 2018 with the late Kofi Annan, then Chair of The Elders.
They also met Nelson Chamisa, leader of the opposition Mdc-Alliance party, and representatives of civil society, women’s groups, church leaders and representatives of the international community. They were particularly impressed with their conversations with women from across Zimbabwe convened in a dialogue platform by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches. This inclusive model offers a path for the whole country.

Ron Howard is fast becoming a noted music documentarian: His 2016 film, “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — the Touring Years,” released by Abramorama in theaters and Hulu on television, was a Grammy winner. His follow-up is “Pavarotti,” a doc about the man who became one of the most successful and beloved opera singers in history. The movie, which opened on June 7, features seminal performances by the late tenor as well as intimate interviews, including never-before-seen footage and appearances by such fans as Princess Diana, Bono, Nelson Mandela, Spike Lee, Kofi Annan, Stevie Wonder and Sting.
To craft the film, Howard reteamed with “The Beatles” project editor Paul Crowder and co-producer Nigel Sinclair, who were involved from the start, says the director. “As with the Beatles film, it really helps to have an editor who’s very musical,” Howard says, “and Paul, who’s also a director, brings all that: his musicality,...

The Elders announced this week with great pleasure that three new members have joined the group: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Laureate 2011; Juan Manuel Santos, former President of Colombia and Nobel Peace Laureate 2016; and Zeid Raad Al Hussein, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights 2014-18.

The Elders have expressed deep concern at the worsening social and economic crisis in Zimbabwe amid reports of killings, arrests and intimidation of opposition and civil society figures and a shutdown of internet access.
Repression and violence would further erode trust in state authorities and imperil Zimbabwe’s much-needed transition towards a more inclusive, prosperous and sustainable future.
Zimbabwe’s leaders need to be extremely cautious in their use of the security services. The Elders expressed particular alarm at the use of live ammunition by police and security services in recent days, especially given the findings of the official commission of inquiry into the post-election violence of 1 August where six people were killed by live rounds in Harare.
Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders, said:

The Elders announced today that their new Chair will be Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Mary Robinson becomes The Elders’ third Chair since the group was founded by Nelson Mandela in 2007, following Archbishop Desmond Tutu (2007-13) and Kofi Annan (2013-2018).
Ban Ki-moon, former Un Secretary-General, and Graça Machel, former Education Minister of Mozambique and co-founder of The Elders, will serve as joint Deputy Chairs, succeeding Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Prime Minister of Norway, who has held the role since 2013.
Mary Robinson said:

The Elders today urged world leaders to meet and increase their political ambition and financial commitments so radical action is taken to keep global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
They voiced alarm that the new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Ipcc) indicates this target will be missed unless immediate action is taken to curb global emissions and end all reliance on fossil fuels.
Gro Harlem Brundtland, Acting Chair of The Elders and former Prime Minister of Norway, said:
“This report is not a wake-up call, it is a ticking time bomb. Climate activists have been calling for decades for leaders to show responsibility and take urgent action, but we have barely scratched the surface of what needs to be done. The Elders today called on India’s leaders to increase public financing on health and show sustained political commitment to deliver Universal Health Coverage (Uhc) which would help lift tens of millions of people out of poor health and poverty.
Speaking at the launch of their new report on Uhc in India, The Elders warned that the country is currently facing a “public health crisis” which risks impeding economic growth and makes it harder to achieve the wider Sustainable Development Goals.
India currently has around 600 million people without effective health coverage, the largest number worldwide, and 63 million people are living in poverty because of health costs.
The Elders’ report contains four key recommendations to achieve Uhc, which means that everybody receives the health services they need without suffering financial hardship:
1. Increase public financing for health to 2.5% of Gdp by 2021

The Elders today urged Zimbabweans at every level in society to uphold the democratic rights to justice and peaceful protest, and refrain from words or actions that could incite violence, drawing on the counsel of their late Chair, Kofi Annan (1938-2018).
Ahead of the ruling by Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court on the petition filed by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change Alliance regarding the 30 July election result, The Elders called on political leaders to act responsibly to avert further bloodshed.
They recalled the words of Kofi Annan, who visited the country in July with his fellow Elders Mary Robinson and Lakhdar Brahimi, with the support of the Kofi Annan Foundation, that “nothing other than the democratic will of the people should be allowed to determine the future of Zimbabwe.”

The Elders are shocked and deeply saddened at the passing of their dear friend and colleague Kofi Annan, who was the globally admired and respected Chair of The Elders.
A founding member of The Elders, Kofi Annan succeeded Archbishop Desmond Tutu as Chair in May 2013. He played a vital role in leading The Elders’ work, and was a voice of great authority and wisdom in public and private, most recently on visits to South Africa and Zimbabwe in July 2018.
As the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, he was a constant advocate for human rights, development and the rule of law. The first Secretary-General to reach the post from within an organisation he served for over 40 years, Kofi Annan had a life-long commitment to the cause of peace and was known for his staunch opposition to military aggression, notably the Us-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The Elders today call on all parties in Zimbabwe to show restraint and calm as the country decides its future.
Led by Kofi Annan, The Elders condemn the violence and tragic deaths that followed the 30 July vote.
Following a pre-election visit to Harare in July to encourage a free, fair and transparent process*, The Elders urge all political parties to publicly recommit and adhere to the Peace Pledge signed on 26 June, refrain from violence and its incitement, and confine any challenge to the election result to the due process of law.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, the Kofi Annan Foundation and Nobel Peace laureate, said:
“The scenes of violence that have erupted in parts of the country after the election are completely unacceptable. We call on all those responsible to step back from the brink, and give the people of Zimbabwe the opportunity of a peaceful transition to democracy.

The Elders today condemned the decision of the United States to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council as an alarming act of isolationism that will make it harder to defend the rights and dignity of vulnerable people worldwide.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former Un Secretary-General, said:
“The Human Rights Council is an integral part of the international system that helps protect fundamental rights and values. I deplore the Us withdrawal, which stands at odds with its historic traditions and sends a signal to others that they too can ignore the Council.”
The Elders were particularly concerned that the Us decision to leave the Council follows a series of similar isolationist measures by President Donald Trump, including withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Un Global Compact on Migration, and the Iran nuclear deal.

The Elders welcomed the historic summit held in Singapore between Us President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (Dprk).

When so much is at stake, we should not judge its outcome as one of ‘winners and losers’; the only winners must be ordinary people on both sides of the 38th Parallel and beyond who wish to live in peace, security and prosperity.”

The Elders today strongly criticised the Us decision to move its Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem as a serious blow to peace between Israelis and Palestinians, and urged other countries not to follow suit.
They reaffirmed their long-held position that the city of Jerusalem must be shared between Israelis and Palestinians as part of a two-state solution based on the internationally-recognised 1967 border, which respects the human and political rights of all its residents.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former Un Secretary-General, said:
“Repeated Un resolutions make clear that the status of Jerusalem can only be changed by agreement between the parties, and then endorsed by the United Nations. Today’s ceremonial opening of the new Us Embassy in Jerusalem is regrettable and makes it harder to maintain the prospect of a viable two-state solution.”
The Elders urged the governments of those countries reportedly contemplating following the Us not to do so.

The Elders today called on the Israeli Government to fully comply with international humanitarian law and respect the right to peaceful protest of Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.
Their call follows the killing of 48 demonstrators and injury of almost 7,000 others, many of them children, by the Israeli army in the past month.
They warned of the danger of more casualties in the run-up to 15 May, when Palestinians mark what they call the “nakba”, or catastrophe – a day after Israel commemorates the 70th anniversary of its independence. Two-thirds of Gaza’s residents are classified by the Un as refugees, having been expelled from or fled nearby Arab towns and villages in 1947 and 1948, or else are their descendants.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former Un Secretary-General, said:
“This is a sensitive – and important – anniversary for Israelis and Palestinians alike. But Israel’s heavy-handed military tactics are inflaming the situation needlessly.

Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, former Un Secretary-General and a Nobel Peace Laureate, said:

The Elders today expressed their deep concern about the potential risks posed by “Brexit” — the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union — to the Good Friday Agreement that has helped secure peace in Northern Ireland for the past two decades.

The Elders have urged the governments of 31 countries, including Brazil, India and South Africa, to sign a Un Code of Conduct initiative committing them not to obstruct credible Security Council resolutions designed to halt or prevent mass atrocities.
The Code of Conduct was launched by the Accountability, Coherence and Transparency (Act) group of countries in October 2015 in response to the Security Council’s failure to take action in Syria, and it has now been signed by nearly two-thirds of Un member states.
The Elders believe that recent events in Syria underscore the need for concerted action to prevent mass atrocities including chemical weapons attacks.
In letters to the foreign ministers of the 31 countries, The Elders emphasised the need for all Un member states to take a proactive role in preventing mass atrocities, and strongly endorsed the Act Code of Conduct as a means of holding the Security Council to account.

The Elders today expressed their deep alarm at the prospect of a further escalation of the Syrian war following the latest reported chemical weapons attack, and called on all parties to avoid further military action which could provoke uncontrollable war.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former United Nations Secretary-General, said:
“This is an extremely delicate moment when cool heads and sober judgement are required. A rush to further military action should be avoided. This will allow a thorough independent investigation into the alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma to take place. Only in this way can responsibility be assigned and any suggestion of impunity for the use of banned weapons be addressed head-on.”
Following the alleged use of poisonous gas against civilians in a small, rebel-held district near Damascus on Saturday evening, international tensions have been raised further by a missile attack against a Syrian airbase.

The Elders express their condolences at the death of South African anti-Apartheid campaigner and former first lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela became an international symbol of resistance to apartheid following the imprisonment of her then husband, Nelson Mandela.
Praised for her courageous defiance during a brutal period of state terror in apartheid South Africa, her resolve – even in the most difficult personal circumstances – inspired many to continue.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders said,

The Elders warned today that new nuclear doctrines and defence rhetoric from the United States and Russia risk a dangerous escalation of tensions that threaten the foundations of global multilateral security infrastructure.
They expressed their concern at the review of nuclear posture recently announced by the United States that raised the prospect of “low-yield” nuclear weapons and a possible nuclear strike in response to a non-nuclear threat.
The Elders also voiced their alarm at the claims in President Vladimir Putin’s state of the union address that Russia has developed a new array of nuclear weapons delivery systems designed to avoid detection.
More fundamentally, The Elders warned that provocative statements from the two sides weakened existing nuclear non-proliferation agreements, and the prospects for their renewal – and that this sends a dangerous signal to other nuclear powers and those with aspirations to secure nuclear weapons for themselves.

The Elders have urged Bulgaria to use its tenure as holder of the European Union Presidency to push for greater action and ambition across the 28-nation bloc to resettle the world’s most vulnerable refugees.
In a letter to Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, The Elders noted that the Un has identified 1.2 million refugees worldwide as being most in need of resettlement, including unaccompanied children, vulnerable women and people with complex medical needs.
They said that the Union Resettlement Framework currently being negotiated by the EU Parliament and Council presents an historic opportunity to address this critical issue.
Bulgaria’s Presidency should step up and show leadership by increasing the number of resettlement places across the EU from the 14,000 offered in 2016, especially in light of President Trump’s decision to significantly cut the Us resettlement programme.

The United Nations classified the Drc as a Level 3 Emergency comparable to Yemen, Syria and Iraq.
The Elders also expressed their grave concern at the severe violence and human rights abuses across the country and the growing political instability sparked by the refusal of President Joseph Kabila to abide by the two-term limit as set out in the constitution.

The Elders are deeply saddened at the untimely death of Pakistani lawyer and human rights defender Asma Jahangir.
Asma Jahangir was internationally respected for her pioneering work in her home country and beyond. She worked closely with her sister Hina Jilani, who is a member of The Elders, to set up Pakistan’s first ever free legal aid centre and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Her commitment to freedom and justice transcended borders and made her a defiant critic of authoritarian regimes who sought to cloak their repression in the guise of cultural traditions.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, said: “Asma Jahangir’s tenacity, clarity of vision and unbending principles helped win countless victories in the struggle against authoritarianism.
The Elders today condemned Us President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as a grave threat to peace across the Middle East.
They reaffirmed their own position that the city of Jerusalem must be shared between Israelis and Palestinians as part of a two-state solution based on the internationally-recognised 1967 border, which respects the human and political rights of all its residents.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders and former Un Secretary-General, said:
“There will be no lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians unless both parties’ rights and claims are respected in the historic city of Jerusalem. I deeply regret today’s decision by the Us President, reversing a long-held position and breaking with the international consensus on Jerusalem. I hope Palestinians and regional Arab powers will react with restraint, and Us allies will do all they can to realign Washington’s policy with international norms.

The Elders today called on all political, military and civil society leaders in Zimbabwe to work together towards free and fair elections and a peaceful, inclusive transition following the resignation of former President Robert Mugabe.
They urged all stakeholders to implement immediate socio-economic measures to address urgent issues that affect ordinary Zimbabweans’ welfare and provide relief to their pain and suffering. Zimbabwe’s neighbours in the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) countries must do all they can to support a successful political process that respects human rights and returns stability and growth to the country.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, said: “The period between now and the 2018 election is critical both for reconciliation and organised transition in Zimbabwe. All stakeholders should come together and engage in serious debate on a future vision and public policy.”
Graça Machel, co-founder of The Elders and a former freedom fighter in Mozambique, said:...

The Elders today strongly condemned “slave auctions” of African migrants in Libya and urged the international community to take all necessary steps to protect the rights and dignity of all people, especially vulnerable foreigners, in the conflict-wracked country.
They shared the concern and dismay expressed by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and called for an immediate end to these practices and other criminal acts of human trafficking.
Kofi Annan, Chair of The Elders, said: “I am shocked and angered by the recent media reports of African migrants being sold as slaves in Libyan auctions. The Libyan authorities must take urgent steps to eradicate these abuses, and the international community must provide necessary political and logistical support to bring criminals to justice.”
The Elders reiterated their call for increased legal pathways for migration so displaced people do not have to rely on smugglers and organised crime networks.

The Elders today called on Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners to lift the land, sea, and air blockade of Yemen to avert an escalation of the humanitarian disaster in the war-stricken country.
They shared the concerns of the United Nations and relief agencies that closing aid channels aggravates the already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen, where millions of people are at risk of famine, cholera, and other health crises.
The Elders were particularly alarmed at reports that the International Committee of the Red Cross (Icrc) was unable to get clearance to ship chlorine tablets from Saudi Arabia into Yemen, noting that over 900,000 cases of cholera have been reported since April 2017.
The Elders also condemned all military actions in Yemen and the region that target or threaten civilians.
