Steven Hoffenberg, who went to prison for a Ponzi scheme he said he built with Jeffrey Epstein, was reportedly found dead on Tuesday at his home in Derby, Connecticut. The cause and manner of death are yet unknown, as the body was seemingly in a state of advanced decomposition. Back in 2002, when I was reporting on Jeffrey Epstein’s finances for Vanity Fair magazine, he was not a household name. During that time, I paid a visit to the Federal Medical Center, Devens in Devens, Massachusetts, to meet with an inmate, one Steven Hoffenberg.
We sat in a little room near a recreation area, Hoffenberg dressed in the requisite orange jumpsuit, while I, several months pregnant with twins, was dressed per prison requirements: as shapelessly as possible.

Then a keeper of the key to those secrets was arrested in New Hampshire last summer.

Millionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein, the center of Netflix's documentary Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, led a mysterious and yet completely public life. The native New Yorker, who was 66 when he died in 2019, kept details of his private life private but ran in high-profile social circles - which is where he allegedly brought many underage girls over the years as part of an elaborate sex-trafficking ring.
His survivors are telling their own version of events in the Netflix documentary, which is weaved in with a more detailed look at Epstein's rise to millionaire status and the various crimes of which he's been accused. For more background on Epstein and some of the key events referenced in the documentary, keep reading. And you can stream the documentary on Netflix starting May 27.
