The third decade of the millennium looks quite different for the Korean entertainment scene compared with just a few years earlier.
In March 2020, “Parasite,” a Korean-made film noir made history by winning three Oscars, including best picture. The following year, Korean veteran Youn Yuh-jung took the Oscar for best supporting actress in “Minari,” while in 2022 “Squid Game” leading man Lee Jung-jae looks poised for Emmy accolades.
K-pop has broken out to become a phenomenon that tops charts, fills global stadiums and airwaves, and the social media warriors of group BTS, who call themselves “Army” would even claim to have had a small influence at the last U.S. presidential election.
In TV and streaming, Disney and Apple are now major investors in Korean programming. They proudly tout their K-cred at the same time they find themselves in a race to catch up with global, regional and even Chinese operators such as Netflix,...

All aboard: TNT has finally set the premiere date for its TV adaptation of “Snowpiercer,” which stars Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs.
The post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama, which is based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel series and the Bong Joon Ho-directed film of the same name, will premiere Sunday, May 31 at 9/8c on the cable channel.
In case you forgot, this is the long-gestating show that started at TNT, moved to TBS and then moved back to TNT. It’s also the show that Josh Friedman wrote the original pilot for and was set to serve as showrunner on, only to be fired over “creative differences” in February 2018 and replaced by “Orphan Black” co-creator Graeme Manson — a decision he did not take well.

Futuristic thriller Snowpiercer, starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, will air on TNT after all. The network just made the surprising announcement; the series will debut on TNT in spring 2020. The news comes months after WarnerMedia in May announced that Snowpiercer, which had been developed and ordered to series by TNT, was moving to TBS. Comedy-centric TBS was to make its first foray into drama programming with Snowpiercer, which in May also was renewed for a second season ahead of its debut.
TBS this afternoon announced a straight-to-series order to the one-hour action drama Obliterated.
“We’ve had the unique opportunity to more thoroughly test and explore where this show will best perform. While we are still adding dramas to TBS (such as Obliterated), after further research and consideration we’ve decided to keep Snowpiercer on TNT,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and president, TNT, TBS, and truTV.

China’s Huanxi Media Group Limited has bought the exclusive broadcasting right in the mainland for the forthcoming sci-fi TV series “Snowpiercer” from ITV Studios Global Entertainment. The show is based on South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho’s film of the same name and is set to debut on TBS in the U.S. in the spring of 2020. Netflix has licensed the international Svod rights outside of China and the U.S.
The series stars Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”) and Tony Award-winner Daveed Diggs, and is produced by Tomorrow Studios, a joint venture between its CEO, Marty Adelstein, and ITV Studios. The long-gestating “Snowpiercer” series is on the move.
WarnerMedia announced Wednesday ahead of their upfront presentation that the series, based on the 2013 film of the same name (pictured above), will now air on TBS instead of TNT as originally planned. In addition, the series has been renewed for a second season well ahead of its planned spring 2020 debut.
The move to TBS comes despite the fact that for the past several years, TBS has defined itself as a comedy brand with shows like “The Last Og,” “Search Party,” and “Angie Tribeca,” the last of which was recently canceled. TNT, meanwhile, has focused on dramas like “The Alienist” and “Animal Kingdom.”
“Snowpiercer is the perfect show to kick-off TBS’ entry into dramas with intricate storytelling, stunning visuals and first-class acting,” said Brett Weitz, general manager for TBS and TNT. “We believe in the longevity of this series and that audiences will...

Exclusive: Like Crazy director Drake Doremus is to direct romantic-drama Aurora for Korean production and distribution powerhouse Cj Entertainment, I can reveal.
The Handmaiden and Snowpiercer backer Cj, which is ramping up its multi-territory production slate, is developing, producing and financing the movie, which is being scripted by Salvador Paskowitz, co-writer of The Age of Adaline.
The project, currently in development, is described to me as a “sweeping romantic drama with a supernatural elements.” It follows a widower who, 25 years after his wife’s death, continues to live alone in Iceland. When a young man comes into his life with a mysterious connection to his past the two develop an uneasy relationship, causing them to question their identities and their past lives.
Producing for Cj Entertainment will be Tae-sung Jeong, CEO of Cj Entertainment, Francis Chung, VP of Global Co-Productions and Head of U.S. Production as well as director Doremus.

We predicted Snowpiercer would break into Cannes of 2013. That didn’t happen. We began to think about Toronto….and nope. Normally we would never associate Park City with a film that had a production budget that tallies up to the production budget of say….ten year’s worth of Next film selections combined, but seeing that there has been loads of positive press, and there is a badly needed window of opportunity left for a North American premiere this might be great timing for South Korea’s box-office favorite to unveil on U.S soil, plus there might be a chance that the final edit would have finally been approved by both parties. Bong Joon-ho might not have been at the fest as a director, but he has a connection with the fest as the writer on Park Ki-Yong’s Motel Cactus (’98) and was invited as a jury member for the 2011 edition.

Snowpiercer
Director: Bong Joon-ho
Writer(s): Joon-ho and Kelly Masterson
Producer(s): Steven Nam, Chan-wook Park, Jeong Tae-Sung
U.S. Distributor: The Weinstein Co.
Cast: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Alison Pill, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner
Continuing in our exceptional year graphic novels-to-film adaptations that we’re stoked about, in comes South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho whose fascination for Snowpiercer stems from a visit at a bookstore. I’m curious to see how the South Korean filmmaker who gave The Host and more recently, the underrated Mother , can wrangle in the most stubborn of fiction subgenres – the apocalyptic film.
Gist: Based on the French graphic novel by Benjamin Legrand and Jacques Lob, Snow Piercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snow Piercer,...

Since producing the critically praised "Spring in My Hometown" and helping to found the Pusan International Film Festival's marketplace, the Pusan Promotion Plan, in the 1990s, Jeong Tae-sung has served as chief operating officer at Showbox, one of South Korea's biggest movie companies. At Showbox, a Mediaplex affiliate, Jeong has been involved in many of the biggest blockbusters in Korean history, including "The Host" and "Taegukgi". Just ahead of the Aug. 1 Showbox release of "D-War", the most expensive Korean movie ever made, Jeong chatted with The Hollywood Reporter's Korea correspondent, Mark Russell.
THR: Is everything on track for "D-War"?
Jeong: Yes, we just had the first screening of the finished film anywhere in Los Angeles last week. It opens in Korea on Aug. 1, on over 500 screens. Then, it opens in the United States in mid-September on around 1,500 screens.
We are targeting both young people and families in Korea, along with people in their 30s who might fondly remember director Shim Hyung-rae's children's movies of the 1980s and '90s. In fact, this time we are focusing our marketing on Shim, because everyone in Korea knows him and his films.
Even though his last film (the 1999 monster movie "Yonggari") did not do well, he did not give up.
