Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter. This time we’re taking a look at 2 different campaigns, one for a comic book based wrestling federation and the other a new horror movie from the people behind The Special.
Championship Wrestling League #1
Championship Wrestling League is a brand new wrestling promotion, except it’s not on your TV or on YouTube, it’s in a comic book. Pretty much combining two of our favourite things (besides movies) that we love here at Nerdly! The Kickstarter campaign, which ends this week, is for the first issue in a five issue arc that will showcase the Cwl roster as well as follow the feud between Cwl Champion King Terrance King and Scotty Sundown...

What’s that, yet Another horror film featuring ghost hunters? Surely that subject has been done to death by now… In fact it’s so played out that the idea of ghost hunters in horror has led to more horror comedies than actual horror films. However Portal sticks firmly in fear with it’s tale of Steven, an ambitious ghost hunter (Ryan Merriman), who is winning a losing battle against the falling ratings for his show Ghostseekers and his competitors Ghost Trackers – who seemingly having more money, and more clout, to produce a much more successful ghost-hunting show.
Desperate for a hit season finale Steven steals information on a haunted house, the Dalvas House, from his competitors. However the whole thing...

Today is the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Wars, now known as Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. It’s about as iconic as a film can get and subsequently spawned the gargantuan media franchise that we all know and love today. Yet, beyond all the famous “Use the Force,” Death Star battles, and Mos Eisley Cantina stuff, there’s one tiny goof that fans have come to adore.
I’m talking, of course, about the famous Stormtrooper who bumps his head on a blast shield door. Until now, it’s been a little hazy who exactly was in the costume, but THR have finally figured it out: it’s actor Laurie Goode. Interestingly, Goode only got the role as the original man cast, Peter Dukes, called in sick at the last minute.

So being the nerd I am I love seeing characters from some of my favorite storied being taken up by fans. No they may not have the budget of a summer blockbuster but something can be said for when you know the characters enough you produce a compelling story that truly captures these heroes and villains. Basically I love fan films. I've been very lucky to talk to lots of creators out there. Mark Cheng from Red Retrieval, Chelton Perry from Teen Titans Project and a few others. Well after watching Sweet Madness by Peter Dukes I've got another favorite added to my list.
So Sweet Madness is a Harley Quinn short and while some would say the character is over exposed I can agree with them on the terms that Harley is a good guy. No I tend to lean towards the Harley that's a villain, sure she's likable...

We recently came in contact with Peter Dukes, a talented filmmaker and founder of Dream Seekers Productions, and received the scoop on preparations for his sixteenth film. Ever heard of a naughty little vixen named Harley Quinn?
That’s right. Dukes, who normally leans toward the horror genre on projects, admittedly does not normally do fan films he is breaking his own rule just this once to show some much needed Harley love that we haven’t seen nearly enough on film. When asked about the reasoning behind undertaking such a project, Dukes stated:
“It's of the utmost importance to me that this film respects the origins of Harley, as I'm a huge fan, but I'm also not afraid to be bold. To bring to life our own unique renditions of Harley and the Joker, and place them within a story that I feel will stand out from the pack...

“Your mama’s dead, and your father probably wishes that you were.” A boy hides from home invaders in Daniel, the latest horror short from writer/director Peter Dukes, but there may be a bigger threat at work than the man stalking the house’s halls with a baseball bat in his hands. With a three minute runtime, Daniel wastes no time hitting home with true terror.
The 15th short from Peter Dukes, co-founder of Dream Seekers Productions, Daniel stars Dominic Pace, Varda Appleton, Peter Le Bas, J.P. Giuliotti and Jake Ryan Scott. It was produced by Dukes under his Dream Seekers Productions banner, with co-producers Shane and Colin Mehigan, Dorothy Chanboon, Gregory Feitel, Andreas Martinsen, Scott J. It’s that time of the year. For whatever reason this is the time of the year that I receive quite a few requests to review shorts. Whether it has to do with festival season, the Halloween pre-season or whether I just start posting more about shorts because I judge the Killer Film Festival, the influx of short film review requests hits my inbox. This makes me an extremely happy reviewer. Disclaimer: I truly enjoy short horror films. I’d say it began with Creepshow and Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors. I got Creepshow from Dad; Dr. Terror from Mom. Both stuck, and one, became my namesake (which I did not give myself I assure you). What could be better than the encapsulation of a creepy idea or shocking concept with a 20 minute window? Tell your story. No filler. The more filler, the more we know you don’t know how to scare us.

Sometimes in life there are rules you can’t break, but everyone especially in their younger years goes through life lessons that they must experience rather than be told. Such is the case of the teenage reaper in Peter Dukes’ Dream Seekers Productions’ Little Reaper.

Details on the Karen Black Fund: “Karen has been waging a battle for over two years with cancer. She has not talked about this publicly because she was hoping it would be cured and she could call herself a cancer survivor. Karen was diagnosed with ampullary cancer in November of 2010. After suffering through nausea, fainting and losing over thirty pounds, she was finally declared Ned – No Evidence of Disease in July. But by December 2011 a small tumor developed and another surgery was in order, which left her completely bed-ridden. Her cancer seemed conquered though. By spring 2012 she was doing a lot better...

Independent filmmaker Peter Dukes (The Beast, A Goblin’s Tale) is hard at work with post-production on his latest short film Little Reaper.
His Dream Seekers Productions has released a new teaser poster and a few stills from the film for us.
A couple of months ago, I had an exclusive interview (read here) with Dukes as he spoke about his past films and the upcoming Little Reaper.
Dukes’ describes Little Reaper as a quirky horror/comedy about the grim reaper’s difficult teenage daughter.
“She's kind of feisty and independent, who really doesn't want to be a reaper but she is forced to take over her father's duties for one day and of course chaos ensues.”
Dukes goes on to say “It's this crazy horror film; it's got a lot of comedy in it. I like to challenge myself; I haven't really tackled comedy before,...

His films run the gamut of genres and include horror, fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, drama, and soon to be comedy. Peter is truly an exceptional artist with an eye for film that only a handful of indie filmmakers have today. Dream Seekers Productions pride themselves on bringing unique, challenging and innovative films to life when they might not have a life elsewhere. They hope to remind moviegoers how inspiring, thought-provoking and wonderful cinema can be.

"The Beast" is a short film that centers around three characters, Jacob, his father Michael and his uncle Douglas. It is a full moon and Michael and Douglas are tying up Jacob to a tree to keep others safe. Jacob is afflicted with the curse of the werewolf, and his father refuses to kill him.
Bill Oberst Jr. plays Michael and gives a wonderful performance. You can see the pain in his eyes as he sees his son go through this. He can't bring himself to terminate him, even though he knows it is the right thing to do.
Peter Le Bas also gives an excellent performance as Douglas. He tries to convince Michael to kill Jacob. When Michael declines, Douglas tries to take matters into his own hands and end Jacob's life. Michael attempts to stop Douglas and during their struggle, Jacob is able to escape.
