The filmmakers behind Super Duper Alice Cooper dub their work the first "doc opera", and it comes pretty close to living up to that hype. Tracing the remarkable career of the band Alice Cooper (a moniker derived from a drunken Ouija board session), we get a nice overview by directors Reginald Harkema, Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of the hedonistic rock of the 70s right through to the present day."Alice Cooper" became not just the band's appelation but the legal name of its flamboyant yet macabre lead singer. From "I'm Eighteen" to "School's Out", Cooper's songs continue to be a staple of Classic Rock radio. The story behind this rise, as well as the many slips along the way (be they professional or personal)...

Music fans rejoice! Two of Canada's greatest documentarians have returned to Hot Docs in 2014 to examine one of the most enduring stories in rock 'n roll: Alice Cooper, in "Super Duper Alice Cooper." Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen are a pair of super-duper filmmakers that have so far given us "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey," "Global Metal," "Iron Maiden: Flight 666," and "Rush: Behind the Lighted Stage."
This production super duo have a real knack at getting you to care about bands you may have never wanted to know anything about. Alice Cooper has legions of fans around the world, and they will love this film, but for many, he's just the guy in the scary make-up. If that describes you, prepare for a highly enjoyable Alice Cooper education.

The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival is winding down, and it's time for Part 1 of our wrap-up of the horror films we took in this year with a look at Summer of Blood, Super Duper Alice Cooper, In Order of Disappearance, and The Canal.
Are we knee deep in film festival season or at the tail end, transitioning from film geekery to... well, just plain geekery with a comic-con every weekend til August? It's hard to keep track these days. Lucky for you, Dread Central sends henchmen to every event worth talking about.
Today I fill those shoes as we run the streets of New York City to catch the freakier films of the Tribeca Film Festival alongside Heather Buckley (on interview duty) and Drew Tinnin (backing us up on all points). As we head toward the close of the event, we thought we'd give you a taste of what we've been taking in.

As directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn proved with 2010's "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage," they can take even the nerdiest, most seemingly inoffensive band, and turn out something fascinating, amusing, insightful and even at times moving. And on paper, tackling shock rocker Alice Cooper—whose onstage persona inspired decades of artists to actively piss off parents—should be an obvious next step. Yet surprisingly, and disappointingly, the filmmakers—along with third co-director Reginald Harkema—miss the mark with the mostly dull and uninvolving "Super Duper Alice Cooper," a portrait of the rock star that lacks the very edge and sense of danger that the artist himself exuded in his prime. And given the access the team behind the movie had not only to Cooper himself, but many key players around him, frustration mounts as one realizes that this could've been so much more. Famed promoter and manager Shep Gordon,...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

My introduction to punk rock came around 1980. I was in Grade 5 and some of my friends had started getting into it, gathering in bedrooms to listen to someone's copy of "Never Mind The Bollocks," "Here's The Sex Pistols" or "The Clash." I envied their newfound commitment to the fashion and the attitude. I liked the music and I wanted to be a part of the scene, too. But I couldn't.
I liked Rush.
It's not that being a Rush fan was ever cause for being ostracized. It was almost unavoidable, especially if you were a kid from southern Ontario at that time. I was reminded of that recently after spotting a "Yyz" license plate while driving into Toronto one day on the 401. Rush just rocked, plain and simple, and were an essential addition to the steady diet of Led Zeppelin, The Who and Jimi Hendrix passed down from our elders.

Of all the genres of music that exist in the world, metal probably receives the least credit. It's controversial, for sure, and aside from rap, it's the only other music that has an unfair, biased connotation to it. People think "metal" and they think of long, hair-sprayed hair, or ridiculous glam performances from the '80s. The truth is, metal is a wide, expansive genre with several different subgenres -- including, but definitely not limited to, Norwegian black metal, nu metal and thrash metal.
Canadian metalheads Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn are the uncontested historians of metal. Their debut metal feature, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, was released in 2005 to amazing reception, and since then they've been creating more documentaries. Their latest, Metal Evolution, is an 11-episode collection of historical and expository vignettes, focusing on how metal has grown into its own distinct genre.

If I’m having a particularly crappy day, and there seem to have been quite a number of those lately, there’s a sure-fire way to perk myself up: Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen. Now pull your head out of the gutter, we’re not talking kinky sex or anything. What I am talking about is hard rock documentaries – some of the best. Ever.
For the uninitiated, Dunn and McFadyen first arrived on the scene in 2005 with Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, a comprehensive introduction to the world of metal. Dunn, an anthropologist, put his two passions (music and anthropology) to good use and the resulting doc was entertaining and informative while not bloated with information. They followed it up a few years later with a second documentary, this one on fans of heavy metal throughout the world and the result, Global Metal was an introduction to not just fans of...

Canadian filmmakers Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn are set to shoot Satan, a feature length documentary about the Prince of Darkness for Alliance Films. Fresh from a Grammy nomination for their latest theatrical documentary "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage", McFadyen and Dunn are also returning to their roots in chronicling the hard rock/heavy metal music genre with the TV series "Metal Evolution: The Series" for VH1 and CTV. At the same time, with heavy metal music long linked to Satanism, the Canadian duo will also stay in the theatrical world with a close-up of Beelzebub from Banger Films, their production shingle. With more than a quarter of Americans believing the Devil is real, the Canadian documentary aims to explore the historical origins and transformation of Satan as a symbol of...

The Exorcist. Rosemary's Baby. The Omen. The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The Last Exorcism. Next Friday's The Rite. For decades the devil's exploits have translated into big box office dollars so it makes sense that someone would want to make a documentary covering all things Big Red!

Rush is a band that has been playing live since 1968 and recording and touring since 1974. They rank just behind The Beatles and the Rolling Stones for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio album sales. They have toured the globe many times over in support of their 19 studio albums and have played to millions of people for 36 years. Despite all of this, little is known about this Canadian rock group outside of the circles of their most ardent fans. Rush is comprised of three fairly private individuals who don’t think of themselves as interesting enough to warrant media scrutiny. Fortunately, there are those who disagree. Among them are filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen, both Rush fans who met with the Holy Rock Triumvirate in August 2007 during a stop in Dallas, TX while on tour in support of their “Snakes and Arrows” album. The first time I heard Rush, everything else I was doing suddenly didn't matter. My body just started releasing Dopamine like some sort of excited puppy with a weak bladder. I had been playing drums for about five years at the time and was listening to guys like Rod Morgenstein of the Dixie Dregs, John Bonham, Steve Smith, who played with Ahmad Jamal, Montrose and Jean-Luc Ponty before joining Journey, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd and Stuart Copeland; anyone who gave me inspiration. As I sat there completely immersed in the syncopated precision of this Canadian power trio, I remember thinking to myself, "Who are these Gods?" Twenty-five years later, that question was skillfully answered by writers/directors Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen, creators of Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and Iron Maiden: Flight 666. Their latest in-depth documentary, Beyond The Lighted Stage...

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage Directed by: Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen Featuring: Neil Peart, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson Interviews: Sebastian Bach, Jack Black, Les Claypool, Billy Corgan, Kirk Hammet, Taylor Hawkins, Vinnie Paul, Mike Portnoy, Trent Reznor, Gene Simmons, Matt Stone, Zakk Wylde There are three types of people in the world: people who love Rush, people who hate Rush, and the rest of the world who have never heard of Rush. Regardless, after 36 years the band has accumulated two-dozen gold records and fourteen platinum records, and are responsible for influencing many of the modern metal and hard rock bands of today. Their story, like any other band, has its ups and downs and the most interesting aspect is that they have strayed away from complete mainstream acceptance from traditional press and critical praise. Director Sam Dunn (Metal: A Headbanger's Journey,Iron Maiden: Flight 666) has thoroughly dug through...

HollywoodNews.com: VH1 Rock Docs’ latest feature will be “Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.” The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival Audience Choice Award documentary gives a comprehensive exploration of the history of legendary Canadian power trio, Rush – from their early days growing up in the suburbs of Toronto, through their landmark albums and tours, and finishing with them in the present day. This documentary offers an in-depth look at the band’s evolution: starting with their progressive hard rock sound of the 70’s, through their popular rock sound of the early 80’s, continuing through the keyboard influenced mid/late 80’s, and deciding in the 90’s to return to a sound more resembling that which made them famous.

In honor of the passing of Ronnie James Dio, the heavy metal singer who is most famous for his work in Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven and Hell, here are several clips from the excellent documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. In the doc, directors Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen, and Jessica Joy Wise traveled the world to interview the legends of heavy metal, not just as lifelong 'bangers but with an eye towards its musical family tree, thematic elements, battles with censorship, and much more. Dunn's academic background as an anthropologist makes Metal much more than a fanboy's tribute. (For a true fanboy tribute, check out Tenacious D's song "Dio.")
Although outsiders might have poked fun at Ronnie James Dio's theatrics, his stunning range, or his predilection for fantasy novel swords-and-dragons imagery, metal fans remain loyal to the man who brought us songs like "Heaven and Hell...

North America's largest Documentary festival, HotDocs, has wrapped up and audiences really, really liked Thunder Soul, a film chronicling the reunion of the Kashmere High School Band - 35 years after their initial success - in honour of their mentor (who turned the school's mediocre jazz band into a legendary funk powerhouse over three decades ago.)

New York -- The ninth annual Tribeca Film Festival, which concluded Sunday, attracted some 410,000 visitors, the second-highest attendance figure in its eight-year history.
The number includes an estimated 300,000 attendees at the free Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and Tribeca/Espn Sports Day held May 1. Around 94,000 people attended the 496 in-theater screenings and events, dropping from a high of 203,000 in 2006 as screenings have slowly been pared back from more than 800 that year.
But one Tribeca figure that hasn't yet been revealed could have the biggest implications for audiences, sales and distribution at other festivals: the number of $45 Premium passes sold for the inaugural Tribeca Film Festival Virtual. The weeklong online program, overseen by fest executive director Nancy Schafer and recently appointed Tribeca Enterprises chief creative officer Geoff Gilmore, streamed eight world and North American premiere features from the fest's lineup, plus shorts, panels and other video content.

A documentary about Canadian prog-rock pioneers Rush has won the audience award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage had its world premiere at the Festival, which was honored during Saturday night's wrap party as the crowd favorite.
The win nets directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn $25,000, and to paraphrase the band's Geddy Lee from the McKenzie Brothers' "Take Off," you know, twenty-five-thousand bucks is twenty-five-thousand bucks. The film is a chronology of the band's progression, and you won't have to wait long to see it: Apparently, a limited release is scheduled for June, when one of the longest-lived rock bands heads back out on the road.

Is Rush making a comeback? Fans of the Canadian progressive rockers will argue the band never really went away. But a larger audience is tapping into the writers of “Spirit of the Radio” and “Limelight” thanks to a new documentary, “Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage,” which took home the 2010 Heineken Audience Award at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, according to Reuters.
Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s Canadian feature received the $25,000 award at the Tff wrap party.
“The best documentary films are just great stories with characters who jump off the screen, and that is certainly the case with ‘Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage,’” said Tff executive director Nancy Schafer.

Rush is probably the strangest anomaly in rock music. They have sold the third most number of albums worldwide of any band (after The Rolling Stones and The Beatles), but have never had a number one single. Their fans are arguably the most devoted in the world, and yet (until recently), Rush has been panned by critics. Rightly called the biggest cult band in the world, these Canadian rockers have only just now had a documentary made about them: Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn.
I’m not a Rush fan, and most of the information imparted in the doc was unknown to me, and so held some interest. McFadyen and Dunn make the smart decision to focus almost exclusively on the music: how the three found their passion, their influences, development, and the strange roads they often took. Rush fans are the most obvious intended audience for the loving documentary Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage. After all, the band has been around long enough for the battle lines to be clearly drawn, and the documentary by Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen makes no bones about the fact that Rush has never been critically accepted or particularly hip. In the cruel world of heavy metal you're either with Rush or against them, and though the film kicks off with some talking head interviews with more than a dozen notable musicians-- Billy Corgan, Gene Simmons, even Jack Black-- confessing their love for the band, you can tell there's a little shame attached. But dammit, if liking Rush is wrong, I don't wanna be right. Going into the film knowing nothing about the band beyond that one scene in I Love You Man, I didn't come out instantly dying to...

One of the most interesting parts of Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen’s documentary Metal: A Headbangers Journey, and one of the main reasons I picked up the DVD, is their family tree of heavy metal which outlines the roots of the musical genre from infancy into its various forms as they appear in today’s diverse music markets.
One of the most disturbing branches of the tree, and one that was only touched on in passing, was Norwegian Black Metal bands, an extreme and violent subculture of musicians who apparently, committed crimes (from church burning to murder) in the name of their music. Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell’s documentary Until the Light Takes Us explores this subculture from the inside. How? The filmmakers moved to Norway for a few years prior to filming in an effort to build a trusting relationship with members of various bands.

It's February 1st, 2008, in Mumbai, India. Thousands of crazed Indian rockers bounce in unison as British metal icons Iron Maiden perform “Aces High.” This is the first show of twenty-three in a most ambitious undertaking. Filmmakers Sam Dunn and Scot McFadyen are along for the ride, aboard a custom outfitted 757, complete with the band, the entire road crew, and twelve tons of equipment. They're destined for the far reaches of the globe and, perhaps, rock n' roll history. Iron Maiden: Flight 666 chronicles the first leg of the band's 2008 “Somewhere Back in Time” tour, taking them 50,000 miles around the globe, playing some of the most unlikely venues imaginable. The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival on Thursday announced the short-film lineup for this year's fest, which runs March 13-21 in Austin, Texas.
A total of 127 shorts, selected from 2,071 submissions, will screen at the festival in eight categories. Music videos and high school shorts will screen as well.
"We're always very proud of our shorts programs," film conference and festival producer Janet Pierson said. "Not only are they carefully curated with an eye towards a cohesive and entertaining 90-minute program, but we feel shorts provide an extremely fertile ground to discover new filmmaking talent."
Several features were added to the full lineup released last week, including Alex Vlack's Bill Withers documentary "Still Bill," Barbara Kopple's Woodstock work "My Generation," Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn's rockumentary "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" and Marc Webb's fictional feature "500 Days of Summer," starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
