Blumhouse Television and Ucp, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, are adapting Leigh Whannell’s 2018 sci-fi, thriller Upgrade into a television series for Whannell to direct.
The series, which Whannell co-created and will executive produce along with showrunner Tim Walsh, picks up a few years after the events of the film and broadens the universe with an evolved version of Stem and a new host – imaging a world in which the government repurposes Stem to help curb criminal activity.
A writer’s room has commenced to write and adapt the series’ first season. Krystal Ziv Houghton and James Roland, who ran the second season of The Purge, have joined Whannell and Walsh.
The film, which Whannell wrote and directed, starred Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel and Harrison Gilbertson. In the film, after his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Marshall-Green) is approached by...

Leigh Whannell may be coming off notable acclaim for his most recent directorial effort in a modern re-telling of The Invisible Man, but it seems that the director’s next move will see him revisit the mythos of one of his previous efforts, the 2018 Blumhouse-hailing sci-fi film, Upgrade, this time for the small screen.
Blumhouse Television and Ucp are going into development on an Upgrade sequel television series, reports Deadline. The series will be co-created and executive produced by Whannell, with day-to-day duties set under the purview of appointed showrunner Tim Walsh, who will share co-creator credit with Whannell.

USA Network has canceled both “The Purge” and “Treadstone,” TheWrap has confirmed.
The decisions come as the network shifts its programming strategy to focus on live and unscripted programming such as WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” or the network’s reboots of “Temptation Island” and “Biggest Loser.”
USA also recently opted to cancel another of its scripted series, “Dare Me,” after one season.

Both “The Purge” and “Treadstone” have been canceled at USA Network, Variety has confirmed.
“The Purge” aired two seasons on the cabler while “Treadstone” had aired one. Both were produced at least in part by Ucp and based on Universal film franchises, with “Treadstone” being set in the “Bourne” universe.
The cancellations come roughly two weeks after USA canceled freshman drama “Dare Me.” Like many cable networks of late, USA is moving more toward unscripted programming like “Temptation Island” and “The Biggest Loser,” as well as the network’s flagship show “Monday Night Raw” from WWE. The network is also focusing on more event-style scripted programming, like its upcoming Evel Knievel limited series starring Milo Ventimiglia. USA will also air the upcoming second season of “Dirty John,” with Season 1 having aired on fellow NBCUniversal network Bravo.

The Purge Season 2 Episode 2
The Purge has traditionally been concerned with that 12-hour period of mayhem and nothing else. There might be a little preparation beforehand as people flee the cities and lock themselves behind strong doors, but for the most part, what happens after the Purge has never been addressed before now. What happens to all the bodies? Who puts out all the fires? How crazy would hospitals be in the wake of an all-night fiesta of violence?
The answer to all these questions are revealed in “Everything Is Fine,” which is an episode title that doubles as a mantra for the various survivors of the previous night's Purging. For most people, the day after the Purge seems to be a time to forget that the previous day ever happened.

Well, they've finally stanched the bleeding. After hemorrhaging ratings all summer long, Syfy has cancelled its grindhouse-style Blood Drive TV show after just one season. Creator James Roland spilled his guts about the TV show's fatal prognosis in a blog post published last night. Airing on Syfy, Blood Drive stars Alan Ritchson, Christina Ochoa, Thomas Dominique, Colin Cunningham, Marama Corlett, and Darren Kent. The dystopian sci-fi TV series centers on Arthur Bailey (Ritchson), one of the last upright cops in Los Angeles, who is pulled into an underground cross-country odyssey with femme fatale Grace D’Argento (Ochoa). But this isn't just any old race -- the cars run on blood. Read More…...

It’s a sad day for fans of the ol’ ultraviolence, as Syfy’s “Blood Drive,” a gleefully disturbing mash-up of horror and sci-fi tropes, will not be returning for a second season. In a heartfelt letter to fans yesterday, creator James Roland described how much making the show meant to him — and how disappointed he was that it had been canceled.
“I got to make a show that I love so much I actually watch episodes as a fan (don’t tell anyone it makes me sound like a douchebag). The past two years are maybe the best of my life, creatively and personally. But none of that prepared me for how incredible it was seeing the show connect with you all on a deep level,” Roland wrote.

Sadly, Syfy have cancelled Blood Drive after one season...
It's a grim week for Syfy viewers.
News broke a few days ago that fan favourite Dark Matter had been cut short after three seasons on the network, and it's now been confirmed that another series has been cancelled - the grindhouse-inspired Blood Drive.
Creator James Roland revealed the news over on his blog, Midnight Grindhouse (via Deadline):
“Unfortunately, your suspicions are correct," he wrote. "Syfy has canceled Blood Drive after one season. If this news makes you angry or sad, you’re not alone. I found out not too long ago, but have been trying to think of a way to tell you guys since I felt it was up to me to let the fans know. Ultimately I decided to wait until after the final episode aired so the news did not taint your experience.

Blood Drive starts where it left off for this week’s Episode 2 — with tanks full of blood and now humans being served up as food at a diner. Last week’s premiere got off to a gruesome grindhouse start with Christina Ochoa’s Grace D’Argentino feeding two roadside assailants to her human blood-fuelled car. Exclusive: Read our interview with Blood Drive creator James Roland The series takes place in a “futuristic” 1999 where water and oil have all but run out and are only available at huge expense. Climate change has taken hold causing soaring temperatures, and people have built cars that...read more...

Here is the natural reaction to watching even just the first episode of “Blood Drive”: “This is seriously on ad-supported television?” Officially, Syfy isn’t subject to FCC rules, but what this weird-ass show gets away with goes well beyond anything you might have ever seen before.
At first, “Blood Drive” seems like a “Death Race 2000” riff with an important and bloody new angle, focusing on a cross-country car race across a dystopian America where all the cars are fueled by human blood.

But the premise pushes well beyond that basic twist. Let’s be completely clear here: The guys at Starz Standards and Practices would probably watch “Blood Drive” and say to themselves, “This seems a little excessive.” Hell, Quentin Tarantino or John Waters might blush.
And that’s by design.

Burning rubber on the small screen tonight is the first episode of Blood Drive, a new Syfy series that's both a lurid love letter to Roger Corman's Death Race movies and the gory, glorious drive-in days of old, while also making a mark with its own crimson-stained swagger. Taking place in a world circa 1999 where water is coveted above currency and violence is commonplace, Blood Drive is populated with intriguing characters looking to make it across the finish line in a cross-country race with a big prize and an even bigger penalty for losing. There is nothing else on television quite like Blood Drive, and with the series premiering tonight on Syfy at 10:00pm Et, I had the pleasure of speaking with lead actor Alan Ritchson about playing Arthur Bailey, a moral compass in a world gone mad.

Later tonight Syfy debuts perhaps one of its most unusual project to date in the form of Blood Drive. The series, which is the brainchild of Weeds writer James Roland, is perhaps the first time we have seen grindhouse-style storytelling adapted for television. We caught up with James to ask him about some of his inspirations for the series as well as future ideas. Monsters & Critics: Having looked at some of your past writing credits as a television writer, it looks like Blood Drive is somewhat of a break from the norm for you. What made you want to do a grindhouse-style...read more...

It's a strange month for TV, a sort of negative zone after the networks wrap up their big-ticket programming and before they launch their summer favorites. (Game of Thrones doesn't come back until July, so we can all chill, if not Netflix-and-chill, for another few weeks.) While a few favorites will make their long-awaited returns this month – good to see you again, Preacher! How ya been, Orphan Black? – there's no better time to investigate something new and/or more unusual. Say, a Florida noir touched up with ridiculous humor, or...

Gas prices are a worry of the past in the post-apocalyptic world of Blood Drive, where cars run on crimson juices and maniacs reign supreme. To help get viewers revved up for the series premiere on June 14th, Syfy has revealed new character images of the show's eclectic cast.
You can view the new Blood Drive character images and previously released trailer below, and in case you missed it, check out the official key art for the series.
"Get uncomfortable…! In the tradition of classic grindhouse movies, Blood Drive (premiering June 14 at 10/9c on Syfy) is a new series soaked in high-octane chaos and just barely approved for television. After Los Angeles’ last good cop (Alan Ritchson) is forced to join a twisted cross-country death race, his only hope of survival is a dangerous femme fatale who has the need for speed (Christina Ochoa). First announced way back in the summer of 2015, the Syfy/Universal co-production Blood Drive is a high-octane, over-the-top scripted series in the classic grindhouse movie tradition. Set in a near-apocalyptic future, the 13-episode series centers around La’s last good cop who is forced to join a twisted, gory cross-country death race – with cars powered by blood (Blood Car meets Death Race anyone?). Blood Drive stars Alan Ritchson, Thomas Dominique, Christina Ochoa, Marama Corlett, and Colin Cunningham; the shows comes from James Roland (Weed) who is a co-executive producer on the show.
The official synopsis:
Los Angeles in the near future: where water is as scarce as oil and climate change keeps the temperature at a cool 115 degrees in the shade. It’s a place where crime is so rampant that only the worst violence is punished and where Arthur Bailey (Ritchson) — the city’s last good cop — runs afoul...

The show revolves around a cross-country death race that involves sex, violence and cars that run on blood. “In the distant future of 1999, a global shortage has ravaged civilization. Instead of going green, we went red,” announces the helpful voiceover guy in the trailer below.
