First-time filmmaker Asimina Proedrou makes her auspicious debut with “Behind the Haystacks,” a family drama set against the Greek refugee crisis that won six awards after premiering at the recently wrapped Thessaloniki Film Festival.
The film tells the story of a middle-aged fisherman who, faced with mounting debt, begins to smuggle refugees across a lake on Greece’s northern border. After tragedy strikes, exposing the hypocrisy at the root of his small town, he and his family must face the consequences.

Four Greek fiction features and two documentaries have been selected for this year’s edition of Thessaloniki Goes to Cannes, the Cannes Film Market’s pix-in-post industry showcase. The projects will be presented to potential sales agents, distributors and festival programmers during a presentation at the Palais des Festivals on July 12.
The event is a collaboration between the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the Greek Film Center, and the Cannes Film Market. Greece is the only country in Southeastern Europe and the Balkans to take part.
This year, the event’s organizers received even more applications than in years past, according to Yianna Sarri, head of the Thessaloniki Film Festival’s industry arm, Agora. “It seems that even during the pandemic, film directors found a way to be more creative,” she said.

The Prishtina International Film Festival has wrapped its 11th edition, which ran from 16-21 July and screened over 70 films, with an awards ceremony held at the National Theatre. The winner of the Balkan film competition at the 11th Prishtina International Film Festival, a strand also known as the “Honey and Blood” programme, was Albanian director Robert Budina’s feature A Shelter Among the Clouds, as decreed by jury members Karin Dix, Daniel Mulloy and Eponine Momenceau. Furthermore, the film’s leading actors, who both originate from Kosovo, Arben Bajraktaraj and Irena Cahani, snagged the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards, respectively. The jury bestowed the Best Director Award upon Turkey’s Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun for his film The Announcement, which also picked up the Fipresci Jury Award. The international jury for PriFest’s European competition, comprising Claudia Landsberger, Armond Morina and Vladimir Anastasov, handed first-time Slovenian director-screenwriter Darko Štante’s Consequences.

Principal Photography of new feature film 'As If I'm Not There' is set to commence on 5 October. The film, adapted and to be directed by Juanita Wilson is her feature film debut. An Irish/Macedonian/Swedish co-production involving Octagon Films (Ireland), Sektor Films (Macedonia) and Stella Nova Films (Sweden) and based on the acclaimed novel by Slavenka Drakulic, the film will be produced by James Flynn (Octagon Films) and Nathalie Lichtenthaeler (Wide Eye Films) and co-produced by Vladimir Anastasov (Sektor Films) and Lena Rehnburg (Stella Nova Films). Shooting in Macedonia will commence on Monday, the 5th October with Tim Fleming (Once) as the director of photography. The film will star Fedja Stukan and Natasa Petrovic and is set in Bosnia during the 1990's Balkan Conflict. 'As If I'm Not There', the feature film debut from writer/director Juanita Wilson (The Door) has secured EUR220,000 funding from the latest Eurimages co-production fund. The Irish / Macedonian / Swedish co-production is produced by Irish producers Nathalie Lichtenthaeler (The Front Line) from Wide Eye Films and James Flynn (Ondine) from Octagon Films. Lena Rehnberg (Let the Right One In) of Sweden's Stella Nova Films and Vladimir Anastasov (The Border Post) of Macedonia's Sektor Film Dooel are also producing. Filming is scheduled to begin on location in Macedonia and Sweden in September 2009 with a seven week shoot planned. Irish Dop Tim Fleming (Once, Wide Open Spaces) is lensing.
