- Terry Venables is an English former football player and manager. During the 1960s and 70s, he played for various clubs including Chelsea F.C., Tottenham Hotspur F.C. and Queens Park Rangers F.C., and gained two caps for England National Football Team.
As a club manager, Venables won the Second Division championship with Crystal Palace F.C. in 1979. He reached the 1982 FA Cup Final with Queens Park Rangers F.C. and won the Second Division in 1983. With FC Barcelona, he won La Liga in 1985 and reached the 1986 European Cup Final. He guided Tottenham Hotspur F.C. to FA Cup victory in 1991. He also managed Middlesbrough F.C. and Leeds United A.F.C.. - He succeeded Graham Taylor as the manager of the England men's national football team in 1994 but stayed in charge for just one tournament, Euro '96. He announced he was standing down after the tournament before it began due to imminent legal wrangles relating to his business interests. Doubts over his probity had actually seen him overlooked for the job when Taylor had been appointed in 1990. Nevertheless, during his short stint in the England job, former player Gary Lineker said that Venables had raised the England team "from the depths to one of the best in the world again".
