Pop superstar Janet Jackson reveals much more of herself than she’s ever done before in the Lifetime-a&e documentary series aptly titled Janet Jackson.
The singer-actress discloses why her first marriage, to James DeBarge, failed (his drug use); her dream as a young woman; and why she counseled Justin Timberlake to avoid public comment after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime show when he inadvertently ripped off Janet’s top, exposing her breast (she wanted to protect his career).
Contenders TV Docs + Unscripted — Deadline’s Complete Coverage
“Through this film, she’s been incredibly open and incredibly honest. And at times that has been very difficult for her,” Benjamin Hirsch, director of the four-part series, noted during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “I admire her honesty and her ability to do that.”
Jackson serves as an executive producer on the series.

Janet Jackson is one of the most influential entertainers the music industry has ever known, paving the way for younger icons like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Britney Spears. But her reign began when she was just a young child, performing at the MGM Casino on the Las Vegas strip with her famous siblings and later starring in TV shows like "Good Times," "Diff'rent Strokes," and "Fame."
After signing a deal with A&m Records in 1982, the then-budding pop star was well on her way to cementing her icon status. Hit singles like "Nasty," "Rhythm Nation," and "That's the Way Love Goes" helped Jackson become one of the best-selling artists of all time, selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Now, 40 years later, Jackson is opening up about her life and career like never before in the long-awaited "Janet Jackson." documentary, which premiered simultaneously on Lifetime and A&e on Jan. 28 and 29.

Over two nights, Janet Jackson’s story is being told in detail — by none other than Jackson herself.
Airing simultaneously on Lifetime and A&e, Janet Jackson is a four-part docuseries that mixes a traditional retelling of a pop star’s life from childhood until now with some juicy revelations; the series straddles the difficult line between rare intimacy from an extremely private public figure and the tight control that comes from letting said figure dictate that narrative. (The first two episodes premiere tonight; the second two air on January 29th.

In the first two of its four parts, the doc depicts a rising star whose decision to take her career by the reins represented a split from her famous family, through old footage as well as interviews with Jackson closer to the present day. Those interview segments, though, struggle to reveal much about a figure whose poise, and whose commitment to privacy, makes “Janet Jackson” a challenge. Janet Jackson seems at times to be operating at cross-purposes with “Janet Jackson” — which would make for an intriguing battle of wills, but for the fact that the real Janet wins so handily.

Believe all the hype about Lifetime and A&e’s two-night special “Janet Jackson.” It’s truly a side of the global superstar the public has never witnessed, including revealing never-before-seen footage from her life. The “Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty” singer is a unicorn in the music industry in that her stardom stretches back to the 1970s but still has relevancy today, a fact supported by the social media success of her recent cover of Allure magazine. It can’t be overstated what Janet Jackson represents as a woman and a woman of color in the music industry and the entertainment industry overall, especially in 2022. To still be standing is one thing, but to have something to say is golden. And Janet Jackson has plenty of tea to spill.

Not every fairy tale in Hollywood has a happy ending.
In Hollywood some marriages start and end in the blink of an eye – and no one knows this better than these starlets. Here's a look at the forgotten first husbands of some very famous women.
1. Damon Thomas (Kim Kardashian)
Before her lavish wedding extravaganza to Kanye West this past May and Kris Humphries in 2012, music producer Damon Thomas was the first to put a ring on it. Kardashian was only 19 years old when she wed Thomas in 2000. They divorced three years later.
2. Ojani Noa (Jennifer Lopez)
Jenny from the block has had her fair share of J.Lovers but Ojani Noa was the lucky lad who first walked Lopez down the aisle in 1997. Their marriage was short lived, however, and they divorced 11 months later. She was later married to Cris Judd from 2001-2002 and Marc Anthony from 2004-2014 (they separated in 2011).

Janet Jackson is apparently ready to give married life another shot: She's engaged to billionaire boyfriend Wissam Al Mana and the couple are planning a spring wedding in Qatar.
According to Us Weekly, citing sources close to the Jackson family, Jackson received a "huge, expensive ring" from Al Mana earlier in the year. The couple's wedding plans sound equally luxurious and are said to involve flying the entire Jackson clan to Qatar by private jet and the creation of a custom menu by a renowned chef.
Us also reports that Jackson wants children, and is ready to adopt if necessary.
Jackson and Al Mana have been dating for two years. The pop superstar was previously married to James DeBarge from 1984-1985 (their marriage was annulled) and Rene Elizondo from 1991-2000 (their relationship was not public knowledge until they filed for divorce after eight years together).

Congratulations! Janet Jackson — Ms. Jackson, if you’re nasty — is engaged to her billionaire boyfriend of two years!
Wissam Al Mana gifted Janet Jackson with ”a huge, expensive [engagement] ring” earlier this year, according to a new report. The two lovebirds are currently planning a spring 2013 wedding.
“She’s afraid it will get lost, so she keeps it locked up!” a source tells Us Weekly of Janet’s engagement ring.
Janet and 37-year-old Wissam’s nuptials are set for this spring in Qatar and the “All For You” singer’s fiance will spare no expense for their wedding!
The affair “will cost millions,” a second Jackson insider reveals. “He is flying in all of Janet’s friends and family on private jets.” Janet has seven siblings and more than 20 nieces and nephews, so we have a feeling the wedding Will cost a lot of money.

Being that this is "American Idol," the results show — which could legitimately be only five minutes long — will run well over two hours. And being that this is Simon Cowell's final "Idol" episode ever, expect lots of celebrity cameos. (And when I say "celebrity," I mean Blake Lewis and Normund Gentle.)
Christina Aguilera and Enrique Iglesias are scheduled to perform (in honor of 1999, the year Simon first got his flat-top haircut), as well as our reigning Idol, Kris "Not Adam Lambert, The Straight One" Allen. There are plenty of rumored appearances, too, ranging from Janet Jackson to Hall and Oates. (Those greatest hits albums aren't going to sell themselves, now will they?)
But wait! There's more!
"Idol" finales bring back the entire Top 12 of the season, and often the singers get paired up with established acts, so congratulations random dude who hoped to see Paige Miles and Insane Clown Posse perform together.

But in a rare interview with ABC News that aired on Wednesday night, the day after her Number Ones album came out, the singer sat down with Robin Roberts to discuss her feelings about brother Michael Jackson's death, her breakup with Jermaine Dupri and how she's trying to gain more control over her sometimes chaotic life.

While many of the people who worked with Michael Jackson on his "This Is Is" concerts expressed surprise at his struggles with drug addiction, sister Janet Jackson told ABC News that she and her family were well aware of her brother's demons.
In fact, Jackson said that she and her family reached out several times over the years to confront Michael about his drug problem and stage interventions, to no avail. "That's what you do," she told interviewer Robin Roberts in a sit-down in which she also blamed Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, for the singer's death. "Those are the things that you do when you love someone. You can't just let them continue on that way. And we did a few times. We weren't very successful."
