This is the fifth in a multi-part series, The Year in Television 2011.
Tastes in television can of course be very subjective. One show may be your cup of tea, but not for the person sitting next to you. For instance, I love Louie, but my husband can’t stand it. I thought Torchwood: Miracle Day was a yawner, and yet the show seemed to have its vocal fans right here on AfterElton.
But where reasonable people can differ on any number of shows, the list below we can probably All agree on. These are the true TV stinkers of 2011. Now there probably were worse shows in 2011 than what appears on this list (H8R for instance), but all the projects appearing below added insult to injury: they might actually have been good. Our list includes the new shows that totally botched a decent concept... or squandered a good cast. And...

And we have a winner -- or a loser, depending on how you look at it. NBC has announced that they have cancelled The Playboy Club after just three episodes due to low ratings.

One of the most interesting aspects of "The Playboy Club's" premiere last Monday night (Sept. 19) was bunny Alice (Leah Cudmore) and her husband Sean (Sean Maher) being closeted homosexuals and members of the Chicago chapter of the Mattachine Society.

One of the more interesting aspects of NBC's "The Playboy Club" premiere last Monday (Sept. 19) was the closeted lesbian bunny Alice (Leah Cudmore) and her closeted gay husband Sean (Sean Maher) working for a chapter of the Mattachine Society, an organization for closeted homosexuals in the 1950s and 60s.
Now Maher, who has been working steadily in Hollywood for 14 years, has decided to use his role as the closeted Sean on "The Playboy Club" to start a dialog and come out of the closet in real life. The pilot to NBC's "controversial" The Playboy Club may not have been as immediately impressive as I would have liked, but there was enough there that I could see the show making the proper tweaks and righting the ship pretty quickly. Very rare is the show that has it all together from episode one and the show had enough moments of vibrancy, mystery, and sensuality that kept me intrigued enough to watch following episodes.
We left off the pilot with Maureen committed to staying at the club, even after accidentally killing mob boss Bruno Bianchi. The Playboy Club premiered last night and as far as first episodes go, it was better than I had expected! The show takes us back to Chicago in the '60s when Hugh Hefner's famous bunny-filled hangout was a place that only key-holders had access to. Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure the show's exterior shots of the club belong to the only strip club in Chicago I've ever been to — or maybe all strip clubs look like that at night.
As the episode begins, we're introduced to club key-holder Nick Dalton (played by Eddie Cibrian), who is a tall, dark, handsome, dimpled and well-connected attorney. I did my best to squash my personal feelings about Cibrian, but since his character seems smarmy, too, I guess I didn't have to try too hard. He is close friends with club manager Billy Morton, who is your usual schlubby sidekick-type of guy.

I did my best to squash my personal feelings about Cibrian, but since his character seems smarmy, too, I guess I didn't have to try too hard.

On the surface, Nick Dalton seems like the prototypical "man who has it all". A suave, handsome, and extremely successful attorney with political aspirations, Dalton owns every room he walks into, both intimidating and intriguing with his cool presence. He's the man you want to learn from and the man you want your sister to end up with.
Except for the fact that Dalton is a former henchman for Bruno Bianchi (aka Cliff Hill), Chicago's primo mob boss, who witnessed his former employer get rough with the cute new cigarette girl Maureen at The Playboy Club and take an accidental (powder blue) stiletto to the neck. With Bianchi's unsuspecting wife sniffing around the club for answers and his girlfriend Carol-Lynne extremely jealous of Maureen, what's Nick Dalton to do?

"The Playboy Club" is kind of "American Dreams" for grown-ups. It lacks the gravity of period predecessor "Mad Men," but that's Ok, for now. We certainly liked it more than we thought we would.
Amber Heard is Maureen (born Phyllis), our main bunny at the club - a Marilyn-type smalltown girl looking to reinvent herself in the big city. Surrounding her are nice bunny Alice (Leah Cudmore), sassy bunny Brenda (Naturi Naughton) and sexy, secretive bunny Janie (Jenna Dewan-Tatum). Presiding over the bunnies are David Krumholtz as Playboy Club manager Billy Rosen, Laura Benanti as the bunny-turned-house-mother Carol-Lynne and Eddie Cibrian as the dashing Nick Dalton, a successful attorney who frequents the club.
Ambition is the name of the game for the characters. Maureen aspires to perform, Brenda aspires to be the "first chocolate centerfold," Alice and her husband aspire to, well, we won't spoil it, but we didn't see it coming.

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner will offer Playboy's October 2011 issue, available September 16, 2011, for only 60 cents (the price of a 1961 issue).
The promotion links up the publication with the debut of NBC's new 1960's retro dramatic TV series "The Playboy Club", starring Tony Award winning actress, Laura Bernanti.
Hef said that because Playboy earns more money from subscriptions than it does with newstand sales, the shortfall expected by the near give-away will be covered by increased advertising for the special issue.
Debuting September 19, 2011, "The Playboy Club", set in 1963, focuses on the employees of the first Playboy Club in Chicago.
Along with Bernanti, cast includes Amber Heard, Eddie Cibrian, Naturi Naughton, David Krumholtz, Leah Renee, Sean Maher, Jenna Dewan, Wes Ramsey and Troy Garity.
Development of the series, originally titled "Bunny Tales", began in 2009 under executive producer Chad Hodge, as a co-production between 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine Entertainment, with...

HollywoodNews.com: Well, The Playboy Club seems right on board with Hugh Hefner’s decades-old mandate that a magazine with naked pictures of women isn’t about sex or exploiting women. I agree with Hef, but it’s not enough for a TV show. Just as Playboy magazine is soft porn, The Playboy Club is soft drama. It can be fun, but it’s no Mad Men, which is exactly what it’s trying to be.
NBC’s new hour long period piece sets the stage well. Carol-Lynne (Laura Benanti) is on stage performing a musical number. Those swing time covers of old hits could be big downloads. Not Glee big but the jazzy doo wop is even better for sophisticated tastes. Benanti is fantastic. They get a soul band in the second half of the hour too, and a good Tina Turner impersonator. The Playboy Club has already introduced us to Maureen.
Now, in the NBC show's latest trailer, we get to know another Bunny fairly well. Her name is Alice, she's played by Leah Renee Cudmore and she's a lesbian. But this is 1961, producer Chad Hodge says, so she's "not an out lesbian."
"The other girls don't know about her. But it's her secret life," Hodge teases.

NBC has made use of the sexy girls on "The Playboy Club" to promote the new series. In some newly-released promo videos, Bunny Maureen (Amber Heard), Bunny Alice (Leah Renee) and Bunny Brenda (Naturi Naughton) dish on what makes them feel lucky working on Playboy Club.
Maureen says that she can be anyone she wants to be at the club, Alice is proud for making more money than her father, while Alice believes she is at the safest place in the world when she is in Playboy Club. However, one of them may not be as fortunate as it seems after she is involved in the murderer of a mob figure.
Eddie Cibrian is cast as Nick Dalton, an attorney who is a "keyholder" at the club, while Troy Garity recently landed a role of John Bianchi who is kind of like a surrogate brother to Dalton. The show will premiere on September 19 at 10 P.

HollywoodNews.com: NBC’s new show The Playboy Club is not what you think. Set in a 1961 Chicago Playboy Club, the show aims to illuminate how empowered the bunnies were. Of course, they’re still sexy in their costumes. The cast and producers presented the show to the Television Critics Association today.
“It’s fun,” star Amber Heard said. “You can’t be in the suit for more than a few seconds without feeling like you’re part of the show. You’re transported back to this time, this very specific moment in history. These clubs no longer exist the way they existed then. You put on this suit and you’re instantly transported back to this time, cigar smoke filled rooms, music, glitter, heels.”
Jenna Dewan Tatum plays one of the bunnies, Janie. A modern girl, she also felt transported by the wardrobe. “It was definitely like playing dress...

NBC has released a new four-minute preview for there upcoming 1960's set period drama, The Playboy Club. They are obviously going for the same look, feel, and success that AMC's Mad Men has. The question is can NBC pull it off? I guess we'll just have to see. I'm not a big fan of Amber Heard, who stars in the show, she sure looks good, but unfortunatley she's a bad actress. The show had got some solid production value behind it though, and I'll give it a chance. The series also stars Eddie Cibrian, Leah Renee, Jenna Dewan, Laura Benanti, David Krumholtz, Naturi Naughton and Wes Ramsey.
The story is set in the year 1963 at the Playboy Club in Chicago. according to the report "Heard will play Maureen, a new hire at the club, originally an orphan from Fort Wayne, an inquisitive young woman with an untethered sexuality and a dark past.
