Have you noticed that a lot of science-fiction movies haven't felt so fictional of late? Oh sure, the genre has always been about our real-world problems in the present day. Yet, as technology has caught up to our collective imaginations, a lot of would-be fantastical representations of the future have come to resemble our current hellscape but either slightly shinier and/or dingier and with A.I. that's capable of more than cranking out fake YouTube film trailer screencaps of men standing behind nude women. Even movies set thousands of years from now on distant planets tend to be about the all-too-topical concern of young white twinks embracing fascism (much to the dismay of their progressive girlfriends).
As dour and sometimes surreal as these movies are, they're also excellent vehicles for filmmakers to talk about the biggest issues of the day and, in doing so, perhaps make them feel just...

"If you just put your hands up, we won't hurt you." Netflix has debuted the main official trailer for a sci-fi super-powers thriller sequel titled Code 8: Part II - arriving for streaming at the end of February. This is a follow-up to the 2019 indie sci-fi film Code 8 (watch the trailer), which is actually about people with special powers living in the near future. It does have some pretty nifty looking robots in it, too. This next one picks up where that first movie left off. In a world where 4% of the population are born with abnormal powers & heavily policed by high-tech robotics, an ex-con teams up with the drug lord he despises to protect a young girl with powers. I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

Plot: Dolores Roach is released after an unjust 16-year prison sentence, and she returns to a now-gentrified Washington Heights neighborhood. She reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to extremes to survive.
Review: It is tough to say whether the golden age of television is thriving or ending. With the streaming wars imploding, the depth and breadth of content on the small screen has never been bigger. But, with dozens upon dozens of series, many’s quality seems questionable. The latest series to debut is The Horror of Dolores Roach. A co-production between Amazon Studios and Blumhouse, The Horror of Dolores Roach is an adaptation of the hit podcast of the same name, which, in turn, was an adaptation of a stage play.

Actress Jean Yoon has reopened the post-cancellation controversy surrounding Asian-Canadian representational issues on- and off-screen on the CBC and Netflix comedy Kim’s Convenience.
Addressing structural barriers to Asian Canadians advancing in their country’s entertainment industry, Yoon argued change would only follow awareness by White Canadian gatekeepers. “As Asians in the film community, we know our industry doesn’t believe it’s racist, the Canadian film and TV industry really doesn’t believe it because they mean well,” she told a virtual panel hosted by the Asian Canadian Film Alliance.

“Kim’s Convenience” star Simu Liu asks himself “every day” whether he should’ve spoken out last month on social media about his experience on the set of the hit CBC series, when he noted in a Facebook post the “overwhelmingly white” producers and lack of Korean voices in the writers’ room after creator Ins Choi departed. But Liu remembers watching what wound up being the anticlimactic series finale at the end of the fifth season, which had just been released on Netflix, and reflecting on the global impact of the show about an Asian Canadian family.
“It made me really sad [for] what could have been, and made me angry, in a lot of ways, that we weren’t able to pull things together to figure out our differences,” he told Variety in mid-June, shortly after being presented with the Canadian Award of Distinction at the 2021 Banff Rockie Awards. Kim’s Convenience star Jean Yoon has come forth with her own claims about the recently ended CBC/Netflix comedy, on the heels of TV son Simu Liu expressing some frustrations.
Earlier this month, Liu penned a lengthy Facebook post which, in part, took issue with the upcoming spinoff Strays, in which cast member Nicole Power will star/reprise her role as Shannon. “I love and am proud of Nicole, and I want the show to succeed for her… but I remain resentful of all of the circumstances that led to the one non-Asian character getting her own show,” Liu opined.

Jean Yoon is the latest “Kim’s Convenience” star to speak out about her negative experience working on the series, citing “overtly racist” storylines that were cut from its fifth and final season, which recently premiered on Netflix.
Responding to an article about co-star Simu Liu’s statement regarding the abrupt conclusion and tension behind the scenes of “Kim’s Convenience,” Yoon wrote on Twitter, “The lack of Asian female, especially Korean writers in the writers room of Kims made my life Very Difficult & the experience of working on the show painful.”
According to Yoon, the “Kim’s Convenience” cast received scripts for the entire fifth season in advance due to the pandemic and “discovered storylines that were Overtly Racist, and so extremely culturally inaccurate that the cast came together and expressed concerns collectively.”
Citing an offensive joke that was ultimately cut from the show, Yoon wrote, “Pastor Nina comes to the [store] to pick up Mrs.

"Reindeer are jerks! They've always been jerks..." Screen Media Ventures has released an official trailer for a cute animated kids movie titled Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer, made by animation studio Awesometown Entertainment based in Toronto. The fun holiday movie is about Elliot, a small but determined miniature horse, who travels to the North Pole to compete for a spot alongside the famous reindeer that pull Santa's sleigh. Against all odds, Elliot and his friend Hazel the goat set out to prove that no dream is too big when you believe in yourself. They've been teaching this lesson to kids for generations now. Josh Hutcherson voices Elliot, and the full voice cast includes Samantha Bee, Morena Baccarin, John Cleese, Martin Short, Jeff Dunham, Christopher Jacot, Jean Yoon, plus George Buza as Santa. This looks super duper, extra cheesy with all the toppings, created as ideal holiday entertainment for anyone with young kids.
