Another hot package, David Mackenzie’s heist thriller “Fuze,” headlined by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is also close to selling. Movies competing at the Berlin Film Festival are also expected to secure U.S. deals, notably “La Cocina” starring Rooney Mara, and opening night movie “Small Things Like These” with Cillian Murphy.

Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, and Dave Bautista all star in projects at one of the biggest Berlin markets in recent memory, post and pre-pandemic.

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

Possession horror is on trend this year, and that looks to continue with Judgment of the Dead. THR reports that the upcoming horror movie will star Mohamed Karim and give an Egyptian spin on the possession formula.
Karim will star and produce Judgment of the Dead. Stuart Ford’s AGC will co-produce with Karim’s Mk Global Entertainment.
The actor will play “Dr. Sherif Hawass, a renowned Egyptologist who must save the world, and the woman he loves, after an artifact he unearths releases an ancient evil.”
Thomas M. Hewlett wrote the screenplay for Judgement of the Dead based on Karim’s original idea.
Interestingly, Judgment of the Dead was initially announced in 2021, under the title Book of Chaos, as a Dark Castle Entertainment feature. Dark Castle initially launched in 1998 by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler and most recently produced Simon Barrett’s directorial debut, Seance, and last year’s Orphan: First Kill.

Méridien Blues
It was a bumpy start to the AFM’s tenure at new home Le Méridien Delfina. Most industry we spoke to were unhappy about something venue-related whether it be the noisy strikes that took place all week, cost, size of rooms, “maze-like” structure, slow lifts (the fire department was reportedly called Friday to help guests stuck in one of the two lifts serving the hotel’s lobby), parking issues, location or general aesthetic. Talk of alternatives continues to bubble. Miami and Las Vegas were mooted destinations among disgruntled industry. But a reimagined fall market has been a long-running point of discussion and many still think Los Angeles offers more than most cities. AFM organizers IFTA told us they have a multi-year deal with the Méridien so it may be a case of listening, learning and improving where possible.

IFC Films and Shudder have snatched up rights to hot AFM horror title Late Night with the Devil, taking the film for North America, U.K. and Ireland in a deal with Cinetic Media.
IFC said it plans to release the film exclusively in theaters, with a later streaming window on Shudder.
Directed by Australian filmmaking brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign), Late Night With the Devil evokes the spirit and style of 1970s horror classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. It tells the story of the charismatic but ratings-challenged late night talk show host Jack Delroy (Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian), who stages a demon-evoking seance on live TV and unexpectedly unleashes evil into the nation’s living rooms.
“Playing Jack Delroy in Late Night with the Devil was a once-in-a-lifetime role that haunted me and changed the way I look at my work forever,...

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

Stuart Ford’s AGC International has taken global rights outside the Middle East and Pakistan to “Voy! Voy! Voy!,” the hit dramedy about a group of impoverished Egyptians who join a professional blind soccer team as a ploy to get to Europe. The film is Egypt’s candidate for the international film Oscar.
“Voy! Voy! Voy!,” which marks the directorial debut of hotshot Egyptian commercials director Omar Hilal, is the tale of a financially struggling security guard named Hassan, who dreams of a better life. One day he stumbles upon the professional sport of blind soccer and cunningly decides to pose as a visually impaired man to join a team that is close to playing a World Cup tournament in Europe. On this journey, Omar intersects with several characters, including a female journalist who begins to take an interest in the team.
