Hypnotic odd-couple story of a teenager struggling with her mental health and a carer exploring their gender
At times it feels like Canadian director Ashley McKenzie is setting a challenge with this: are you arthouse enough? Have you got the cinematic endurance? Her film is the story of a friendship between a neurodivergent teenager called Star struggling with her mental health, and a hospital volunteer newly immigrated from China. You could imagine it being turned into a quirky-cute odd-couple indie comedy with a superficial take on neurodivergence. Instead, McKenzie pulls us into Star’s reality, how she experiences the world. It’s a disorientating, unrelaxing two-hour experience, but rewarding.
It is set in the middle of winter in Nova Scotia, with snow up to the height of car roofs. Star (brilliantly played by Sarah Walker) has been admitted to hospital after drinking poison – not her first suicide attempt. A doctor...

Secret Agents. We love them. What’s not to love? They go to exotic locations, seduce beautiful women, use insanely cool gadgets, drive awesome cars, and just kick ass. I don’t know about you, but I wanted to be one when I was growing up. But the thought of doing a push-up at the time was as hard as skydiving. So I grew up, and the closest I ever got was asking for a vodka martini shaken, not stirred, at a bar once….which I immediately spit out on the floor. So yeah, I was never going to be James Bond.
But then I found a show that made me believe that in another world, a schlubby loser like me could be a superspy. What was the show? Well, it was Chuck, of course.
Yes, Chuck, the show about that Best Buy… Uh, I mean…. “Buy More”, Geek Squad…...

There are chemicals mixed into the magical focal bond in "Queens of the Qing Dynasty." It's perhaps incomprehensible in normal terms but easier to feel in the visual textures of a film about two misfits.
The sophomore feature of Canadian director Ashley McKenzie (the 2016 "Werewolf"), "Queens of the Qing Dynasty" expresses a fixation on particles: the freckles, the frost, and the fingernail dust. Twenty minutes into the film, we're privy to a medical appointment where a scope is lowered into an esophagus and slithers into slimy innards. An unorthodox rhythm is spun out of the mechanical wriggle of the tube and the dilated pupils of the patient, the wide-eyed Canadian teen Star (Sarah Walker). Such textures, visual and sound, define Star's existence as a neurodivergent teen.
Star speaks in her own terse vernaculars. Her perpetual facial placidness is not to be mistaken for stoicism, vacancy, or aloofness. She holds a...

“Thank you for communicating and being like family. I love you for that,” Star (Sarah Walker) tells An (Ziyin Zheng) in the final moments of “Queens of the Qing Dynasty.” The moment feels like a closure point, as if the close friendship between the characters has run its course. But rather than a goodbye, it instead feels like the friendship is being put in a box, carefully placed in the back of a closet. The intensity of this moment for Star and An is over, but they are both forever changed simply by knowing each other. It’s like the parting of two lovers, connected by language instead of sex or even physical touch. Their relationship is personified perfectly on the poster, which displays two hands crossed at the wrist, occupying the same space without contact, close and distant at the same time.

Queens of the Qing Dynasty, the second feature from Nova Scotia’s Ashley McKenzie, is a unique work of independently produced Canadian cinema. Both a stark about-face from the hardscrabble realism of her 2016 debut Werewolf—about a pair of strung-out young lovers living hand-to-mouth on the margins of Cape Breton—and a decisive break from the docufiction trends of art cinema at large, Queens is rigorously composed and austerely dramatized, an artful fable pitched somewhere between comedy and tragedy. Starring newcomer Sarah Walker as Star, a neurodivergent teen who develops a deep connection with her caregiver An (Ziyin Zheng, also making their […]

My favorite film of the Berlinale was Queens of the Qing Dynasty, Ashley McKenzie’s ambitious and otherworldly fantasia about a “queer friendship romance” between a suicidal young woman and a Chinese immigrant she meets while hospitalized. Inspired by two teenagers she befriended during the casting of her previous feature, Werewolf (2016), McKenzie first sketched out the central character, Star (Sarah Walker), whose everyday life is mediated by endless negotiations with social workers, doctors, guardians, landlords and the various bureaucracies that employ them. Star is aging out of child protective services and has been deemed unfit to live independently, so as […]

Queens of the Qing Dynasty is writer-director Ashley McKenzie’s long-awaited follow-up to Werewolf (2016), her auspicious first feature, and one of the most acclaimed Canadian debuts of recent years. Like Werewolf, Queens is set on McKenzie’s native Cape Breton Island, off the East Coast of Nova Scotia. And like that film, it is essentially a two-hander, following a pair of entwined lives with an at times disconcerting intimacy. When first introduced, 18-year-old Star (Sarah Walker) has been admitted to a hospital for ingesting poison, though we quickly surmise that she has been in and out of hospitals and social welfare institutions for much of her life. Meanwhile, An (Ziyin Zheng), a Chinese expatriate volunteering at a local hospital to accrue immigration points, has been assigned to her case. The strange, symbiotic relationship that soon develops between the two provides the film with its unpredictable, live-wire energy. In its approach to psychology and character subjectivity,...

Our introductions to writer/director Ashley McKenzie’s leads in Queens of the Qing Dynasty are not to be forgotten. Whether Star’s (Sarah Walker) open-mouthed and fully dilated thousand-yard stare in a hospital bed after her latest suicide attempt (this time for drinking poison) or An’s (Ziyin Zheng) voice regaling the women nurses with a Chinese song while their supervisor drawls “Old Macdonald” in response, the notion that we’re dealing with two eccentrics in a world that may never understand them is abundantly clear. It’s therefore only right that they’d end up being put on a collision course ignited by duty (An’s hospital volunteer is assigned Star’s evening suicide watch) yet sustained by genuine intrigue. They share their deepest secrets without judgement, ultimately discovering things about themselves along the way.

Filmmaker Ashley McKenzie (“Werewolf”) returns to the Berlinale this year with her second feature, “Queens of the Qing Dynasty,” premiering in Encounters on Tuesday. The writer-director stands out as an emerging Canadian talent, backed by the Toronto Film Critics Assn., who awarded her debut film the $100,000 Rogers Best Canadian Film Award in 2017.
An impressive new offering, “Queens” showcases McKenzie’s flair for loose, floating narratives and complex characters hoping to break free from their ennui. Protagonist Star (Sarah Walker) navigates life after a suicide attempt with the help of a special kind of babysitter, hospital volunteer An (Ziyin Zheng). An idiosyncratic friendship blooms and Star finally begins to feel a sense of kinship in her life, supported by a vibrantly queer individual who stands apart from the beige monotony of her experiences in the outside world.

Zachary Levi, who starred as the titular protagonist of Chuck from 2007 to 2012, is still campaigning for a sequel movie and appealing to series co-producer Chris Fedak to write a script.
While NBC’s hit show suffered from low ratings during its run, Chuck has always taken advantage of a dedicated fanbase and over the many years of its absence, a cult following has formed around the adventures of the nerdy computer expert named Charles Bartowski, who has all the secrets of the world encoded inside his brain, and his sidekicks Agent Sarah Walker and Colonel John Casey.
Even though the cast of Chuck seem to be doing alright for themselves, they’re still very passionate about their former family and have expressed interest in a reunion as a sequel movie or better yet, a sixth season. In fact, Levi himself has time and again campaigned to bring the series back for the sake of fans,...

Silicon Valley will return for its seven-episode, sixth and final season in October, HBO revealed today at TCA. A specific date was not announced.
Created by Mike Judge, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, the Emmy-nominated Silicon Valley takes a comic look at the modern-day epicenter of the high-tech gold rush, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.
“Silicon Valley has been a career and life highlight for us,” series executive producers/showrunners Mike Judge and Alec Berg said when the final season was announced in May. “We’ll miss it desperately, but we’ve always let Pied Piper’s journey guide the way, and Season 6 seems to be the fitting conclusion. We are forever indebted to our incredible cast, crew and partners at HBO. At a certain point, there’s only so much we can do to make the world a better place.

A Discovery of Witches is brewing a slow-simmer success. The supernatural drama made its commercial television debut last Sunday night on AMC and BBC America (9:00 Pm Et/Pt) with a cast led by Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge), Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Valarie Pettiford (Being Mary Jane), and Owen Teale (Game of Thrones). After his Emmy nomination last year for The Crown, Goode might rank as the most illustrious name from the show’s ensemble but make no mistake: A Discovery Of Witches is a television adaptation that echoes with the female voice in every phase.

Tess Haubrich in ‘Bad Mothers’.
Tess Haubrich jumped at the chance to play a key role in Bad Mothers at very short notice after Jessica Marais was forced to withdraw for health reasons – not least because she had never worked with female directors.
Sian Davies, Catriona McKenzie and Geoff Bennett directed the Nine Network’s ensemble comedy-drama from Jungle Entertainment and Filthy Productions.
“It’s quite shocking that I had never worked on shows with female directors, except on short films,” says Haubrich, whose credits include Pine Gap, Wolf Creek 2, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, the Jackie Chan starrer Bleeding Steel and the Turner-Roache brothers Nekrotronic.

The cast of ‘Bad Mothers’
As parents, Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang agreed that being a mother can be an impossible job and that no matter how hard they try, women will sometimes feel they are bad mothers.
The Auckland-based founders of Filthy Productions came up with the concept of a comedy-drama about five mums whose kids go to the same school, overlaid with a murder mystery, and pitched it to the Nine Network.
Execs at Nine suggested Strawhan and Lang find an Australian partner, which turned out to be Jungle Entertainment. The result is Bad Mothers, which launches on Nine at 9 pm on February 18 and across the ditch on Tvnz on February 20.
The ensemble show stars Tess Haubrich as Sarah, whose perfect life as a Gp, wife and mother is shattered when she discovers her husband Anton (Daniel MacPherson) is having an affair. Even worse, her best friend is...

AMC Networks is giving a major platform to A Discovery of Witches following its breakout success on streaming services Sundance Now and Shudder. The first season of the series, starring Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer, is getting a linear run in a simulcast on AMC and BBC America starting April 7 at 9 Pm, following BBC America and AMC’s previously announced simulcast of Killing Eve at 8 Pm.
Sky’s A Discovery of Witches last summer was picked up by AMC Networks’ Ott platforms Sundance Now and Shudder with a planned followup linear run on SundanceTV. In light of its digital success and the series’ compatibility with BBC America’s Killing Eve, a decision was recently made for the linear airing to be on the higher-profile BBC America as a companion to Killing Eve. Since AMC Networks already had announced that Season 2 of Killing Eve would simulcast on AMC, A Discovery of Witches...

Harry Greenwood.
Harry Greenwood graduated from Nida in 2012, so being named one of the Casting Guild of Australia’s 10 Rising Stars of 2018 could be considered as long overdue recognition.
“It has been a long haul,” the 29-year-old son of Hugo Weaving and artist Katrina Greenwood tells If. “It is nice to be recognised.”
Greenwood’s career has been on an upward trajectory since his breakthrough role as young Digger Bevan Johnson, the older brother of Kodi Smit-McPhee’s Thomas Johnson, in the 2015 Nine Network miniseries Gallipoli directed by Glendyn Ivin.
Next year could well be his biggest yet as he will be seen in Bad Mothers, the eight-part Nine Network comedy/drama from Jungle Entertainment and New Zealand-based Filthy Productions, and in two high-profile features: Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang and Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale.
Now shooting in Melbourne, Bad Mothers stars Melissa George,...

“I didn’t know if I could play her,” says Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena Joy Waterford on Hulu’s near-future dystopian series, The Handmaid’s Tale, which tells the stories of women trying to survive within the totalitarian and Christian fundamentalist government of Gilead, which has taken over what remains of the United States. The first three episodes premiered on April 26.
Most famous for playing Sarah Walker on the action-comedy series Chuck for five seasons and later for recurring roles on Dexter and 24: Live Another Day, The Handmaid’s Tale is unlike any show Strahovski has been a part of. “It’s kind of incomparable,” she says of her past work, particularly Chuck, which first premiered 10 years ago. “It’s always a learning curve. I feel like a different person now embarking on this project, The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On the show, which is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s celebrated 1985 novel and was recently renewed...
