Indie Movie “Game-Changer”
£1B worth of sweeteners: It was a potentially “game-changing” week for a floundering British indie film sector with the unveiling of a 40% tax relief on movies with budgets less than £15M ($19M) — a relief that trade body Pact says it has been calling for in some form or another since 2017 and which answers the prayers of Culture, Media & Sport Committee boss Caroline Dinenage. Jeremy Hunt’s budget was perhaps the most listened-to and most celebrated for a decade by the creative industries after the UK Chancellor unveiled the relief with fanfare alongside 40% business rates relief for big studios and improved VFX relief. All in all, Hunt and the UK treasury said that the...

Exclusive: It was a moment of high drama befitting a premium TV series and yet was playing out in real time in front of the people of Poland.
Just days before Christmas, when the nation should have been winding down for the holidays, the Tvp national broadcaster’s news operation was abruptly taken off air and bosses unceremoniously fired as Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition took power from the ruling Law & Justice (PiS) party after eight years in opposition.
Protests were sparked by outgoing Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, police were summoned and some Polish news channels, briefly, went black. The departing Kaczyński branded the new Tusk government’s move “illegal” but the new leader pushed on, dismissing senior management and boards, and pledging to create new news outlets that would be balanced.
This was no simple changing of the guard, however. More than two months on, Deadline has revisited the...

Bosses at Poland’s oldest state broadcaster have been removed and its news channel taken off air by Donald Tusk’s new government.
The heads of Tvp, Polish Radio and state news agency Pap were fired yesterday with the new Tusk-led coalition dismissing Tvp as a propaganda channel that had been aligned with the Law and Justice (PiS) party – the nation’s previous ruling administration.
Responding, PiS’ head Jaroslaw Kaczynski condemned the Tusk government’s “illegal actions” and joined a protest at Tvp headquarters in the Polish capital Warsaw overnight. Last night, Tvp Info, the 24-hour news service, symbolically changed its headline strap from red to black before being taken off air.
Poland’s state treasury owns 100% of the 70-year-old state broadcaster and “the necessity for this type of action and the justification were set out in the resolution of the [parliament] of the Republic of Poland of December 19, 2023,” according to the Polish culture ministry,...

Exclusive: Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd) insiders in Poland have reacted with alarm after a group of European regulators said they plan to meet to discuss what the insiders believe could lead to the closure of the U.S. media giant’s operation in the nation.
The National Broadcasting Council of Poland (KRRiT) yesterday said it intends to organize a gathering of nine audiovisual market regulators from Central and Eastern Europe in Warsaw in September in a bid to “jointly counter Russian propaganda within the European Union.”
Wbd insiders interpret the move as an attempt to potentially shut down its legacy Polish operation, which includes news network TVN24. They point to frequent attacks by the Polish government – the KRRiT overseer – that conflates its anti-government reporting with being pro-Russian. Last month, a TVN24 journalist was called a “Kremlin representative” by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the ruling Law and Justice Party, a...

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda on Monday vetoed a media bill that would have silenced a Discovery-owned news channel there, noting concerns about straining U.S. relations and damaging Poland’s international image as a place to do business.
The bill would have prevented any non-European entity from owning more than a 49% stake in Polish radio or TV broadcasters. Discovery owns Poland’s largest private television network, Tvn, and is the only significant non-European media owner in the country. The bill was seen by critics as specifically targeting Tvn, which is critical of the government. If passed, it would have forced Discovery to divest part or all of its holding.
This legislation has been batting around the Polish parliament since last summer year and appeared to have died earlier this fall when the Senate voted against passage. But it made a surprise reappearance on Friday, Polish lawmakers’ last session of the year,...

Academy Award winner Pawel Pawlikowski says he’s watching “with horror” as political developments increasingly divide countries across the globe, and admits that he’s reluctant to take a stab at documenting modern life after the success of his two critically acclaimed period dramas, foreign-language Oscar winner “Ida” and thrice-nominated “Cold War.”
“I don’t have a hook on contemporary. I don’t know how to do it, because I’m living it and watching it with horror,” he tells Variety. “Everywhere it’s the same conflict between these two parts of society which are split down the middle, and there’s less and less common ground. You don’t need to make a film about it. You just see it.”
Pawlikowski is attending the Sarajevo Film Festival, where he received the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award “for his outstanding contribution to the art of film and his lasting friendship...
