DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

The historic city of New Orleans also happens to be one of the most haunted and rich in supernatural folklore. That makes it the perfect setting for “Fright Krewe,” an animated gateway horror series from creators/executive producers Eli Roth and James Frey. The 10-episode inaugural season charms for its adolescent spin on Voodoo, folklore, and a demonic ancient prophecy that’s never quite as scary as high school.
Soleil (Sydney Mikayla) loves New Orleans for its open embrace of all things spooky. That love also means she’s a bit of an outsider at school. Soleil is comfortable as a loner, but that changes when an ancient prophecy gets triggered by the awakening of a dormant demon. Soleil, along with fellow peers Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.), Missy (Grace Lu), Stanley (Chester Rushing), and Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), is tasked by Loa spirits with the job of saving the city.

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.
While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

Until recently, Taraji P. Henson was concentrating on finishing up her time as Cookie Lyon on Fox’s “Empire,” but on March 14, production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

An action-comedy whose default mode is a kind of sustained hysteria, “Coffee & Kareem” starts with buddy-movie tropes, massive amounts of firepower and even more four-letter words. It tosses them in a meat grinder with some wry psychobabble, some social commentary and a dash of family values and throws them against Netflix’s virtual wall to see what sticks.
It’s kind of a mess, a crazy balancing act that flails as often as it connects. But director Michael Dowse, working from a Black Listed script by Shane Mack, has fun with the whole crazy concoction and finds at least one scene-stealing performance that hits just the right note of insanity.
Over the years, Dowse has shown to be adept with mockumentary (the 2002 Sundance hit “Fubar”) and indie romantic comedy. But “Coffee & Kareem” is his second straight movie to focus on odd-couple crimefighters, after last year’s “Stuber” with...

For anyone who hasn’t gotten their fill of Betty Gilpin maniacally screaming while brandishing a deadly weapon this year — and, no, even with the actress’ outstanding performance in “The Hunt” already available to watch in your own home, you have not yet gotten your fill — Michael Dowse’s uneven “Coffee & Kareem” at least offers that in heady doses. The “Stuber” and “Goon” filmmaker has decamped for Netflix for his latest feature, a raunchy, foul-mouthed buddy comedy about mismatched maybe-pals that never quite lives up to its caffeine-infused title.
Diverting enough at just under 90 minutes, “Coffee & Kareem” likely won’t do for the R-rated comedy that other Netflix offerings have done for the rom-com, but a strong finale helps end thing things on a high point. And while the film is understandably concerned with its titular characters — Ed Helms as straight-edge Detroit cop James Coffee, young star Terrence Little Gardenhigh...

There’s politically incorrect, and then there’s just plain wrong.
Netflix’s “Coffee & Kareem” pairs a young black kid with an inept white cop and hopes that their differences will amuse (or at least distract) stuck-at-home audiences for 90 minutes or so. But what audiences? What adult wants to watch this kind of “Kindergarten Cop” nonsense? that no parent in his or her right mind would let Junior tune in.
But that’s the beauty of Netflix, I guess: Age-based MPAA ratings are for the chumps who make movies for theaters (such a 20th-century — or at least pre-coronavirus — concept), whereas when it comes to serve-yourself at-home streaming, there’s no divide between bad movies and bad-for-you movies.
So here’s the pitch: James Coffee is an awkward, overly cautious cop — a role for which Ed Helms is well suited. Kareem Manning is a chubbier-than-most Detroit public school misfit forced...
