At one point, the case of Chandra Levy's 2001 death seemed all wrapped up: Ingmar Guandique had been convicted of her murder and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Viewers flocked to see Whitney Houston open up about personal issues that have made her a tabloid fixture in recent years. Diane Sawyer's interview with the pop diva in A Special Edition of Primetime attracted 21.3 million viewers Wednesday night, the largest for any newsmagazine telecast since Connie Chung's Primetime interview with Gary Condit on Aug. 23, 2001. Among adults 18-49, the program averaged a 9.0 rating/22 share -- the highest for a newsmagazine since Barbara Walters' one-on-one with Monica Lewinsky on ABC's "20/20" in March 1999. Primetime, which aired in The Bachelor's Wednesday 9 p.m. slot, also ranked as ABC's second most-watched telecast this season behind The Bachelor finale. The newsmag, with some help from My Wife and Kids and George Lopez at 8 p.m., won the night with 13.7 million viewers and a 5.6/14 in 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The WB Network scored high marks in male demographics with its The Lord of the Rings: Return to Middle Earth special at 8 p.m., including highest rating ever for a special in men 12-34 (2.5/8).
