Doha (Qatar), Nov 25 (Ians) Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in five World Cups as Portugal survived a few anxious moments to overcome African side Ghana 3-2 in a Group H match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at Stadium 974 here on Thursday.
After the two teams remained goalless till an hour into the match, Portugal earned a penalty when Ronaldo was brought down inside the box by Mohammed Sslisu. Ronaldo himself stepped up to convert the penalty and make it 1-0 for Portugal in the 65th minute.
The 37-year-old became the second oldest player after Cameroon’s Roger Milla to score a goal in the World Cup and also the third player to be both his country’s oldest and youngest goalscorer at the World Cup. Croatia’s Ivica Olic and Denmark’s Michael Laudrup are the other two.

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has been a “breath of fresh air” for the Barclays Premier League, believes Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren.
The 36-year-old took over as Swans manager in February 2014 after being promoted from the club’s playing staff, succeeding Michael Laudrup, and he led the Welsh side to an eighth-place finish during his first full season in charge last time out, something McClaren described as “very, very impressive”.
McClaren was effusive in his praise of his Premier League counterpart – as well as for Swansea’s chairman and the club itself for putting faith in their young boss.

The Magpies travel to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea on Saturday (3pm kick-off), with both sides fresh from respective 2-2 draws against Southampton and champions Chelsea.

It’s only taken them close to six months to do so, but Newcastle United finally appear to have settled on a four-man shortlist for their head-coach role. Instead of appointing someone immediately when Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace at the turn of the year, John Carver was allowed to take over the reins for the remainder of the 2014-15 – with disastrous consequences.
Steve McClaren is still interesting Newcastle – despite rebuffing them twice – while former Lyon boss Remi Garde is also on the list, and (reportedly) ex-Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup or Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka are others the Magpies are supposedly at.
Yet it is the fourth candidate who is the most intriguing. In the last few days, momentum has gathered for Patrick Vieira, as his odds have tumbled from 33-1 outsider to 4-5 favourite.

A summer of major transition and rebuilding beckons for Newcastle after a campaign that promised so much but ultimately exposed a host of festering issues that have undermined the club’s progress in the last two seasons. For the eighth year running the power to enforce a change in the Magpies’ direction rests in the hands of Mike Ashley, with the owner facing yet another inquest as to his agenda.
Aggressive and incisive action is required by Ashley to lift the gloom on Tyneside and arrest a decline that has many fans questioning whether they will be supporting a Premier League team 12 months from now.
We believe there are five key ways Ashley can instigate a change at St James’ Park and give supporters a reason to be optimistic about the season ahead.

I certainly found it shocking when Swansea elected to sack Michael Laudrup earlier this month. However, as with any piece of football news, it always helps to create an idea for a new football article. The purpose of this slideshow is to look at who the major contenders to be the next permanent manager of the club will be.
Of course, as with any article of this type, it’s necessary to have a few different elements such as the use of personal opinion, betting information from Odds Checker and stats from Who Scored. Swansea will feel fairly comfortable on their chances of survival as they are currently 10th in the league, which sees them four points above the relegation zone.

Swansea City’s decision to sack manager Michael Laudrup is certainly a shocking one, and it seems the Danish manager has paid the ultimate price for a poor run of recent form. However, it’s often said that form is temporary, but class is permanent. Most of us involved in the football media would agree that Laudrup is a very classy man.
The club’s decision to get rid of their manager certainly seems harsh to me considering they currently sit 12th in the league. In fact, with the bottom half of the Premier League looking so tight, it’s a decision that the Welsh may yet regret. It wasn’t long ago that the Dane was considered one of the brightest young managers in the game, but it’s clear that has been quickly forgotten at Swansea.

Swansea City caused quite a stir on Tuesday evening when they announced they had parted company with manager Michael Laudrup. The Welsh club are 12th in the Premier League, which might sound like blissful mid-table anonymity, but in such a tight bottom half they remain only two points clear of the relegation zone.
While it may be overstepping the mark to suggest that Swansea are now certainties for the drop without their manager, particularly after a season where they finished nineth in the league and lifted the Capital One Cup, there are reasons why the season’s end may prove a little more sweaty than previously imagined.
Recent results, culminating in a 2-0 defeat to West Ham, have been poor, and have slightly dulled the shock factor in Huw Jenkins’ decision, but it was still a surprising decision in a football sense. Whatever...

One of the biggest deals of the last few hours of the January transfer window has been Liverpool’s long-winded pursuit of Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, which was believed to have faltered earlier in the day, but according to the Daily Mail, Brendan Rodgers and Ian Ayre were working on another deal to bolster the squad at Anfield.
According to both Alex Kay, of the Daily Mail, and the Mail’s reporter Riath Al-Samarrai, who covers Swansea City and Cardiff City, Liverpool lodged a bid for Swansea City’s Spanish centre-half Chico Flores.

The 26 year old defender has enjoyed a good time with Swansea since signing from Genoa in July 2012, and recently signed a new one year extension to keep him at the club until 2016.

Swansea have confirmed they have pulled out of negotiations to sign Blackpool winger Tom Ince, according to the BBC.
Ince had held talks with the Swans earlier in the week and also met with a number of other Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Stoke City.
But the Welsh outfit have now announced the 22-year-old will not be moving to the Liberty Stadium in this month’s transfer window.
A Swansea spokesman announced:
After international discussions, we decided to pursue other options. He was informed last night.
Ince has not played for Blackpool in either of their last two games since his father, Paul, was sacked as manager of the Championship club on January 21.
He looks set to leave the Tangerines after being told by the Seasiders he is free to hold negotiations with other clubs regarding a move away.

Emmanuel Adebayor bagged a brace either side of a Chico Flores own goal as Tottenham Hotspur ensured Swansea’s winless Premier League run extended to eight matches.
Wilfried Bony netted a consolation at the Liberty Stadium as the Swans saw injuries hamper them yet again. Tim Sherwood meanwhile took his team level with fourth placed Liverpool.
Jonjo Shelvey twice fired wide in the opening six minutes for hosts Swansea. He later worked Hugo Lloris after winning possession from Spurs centre back Vlad Chiriches. The hosts continued their strong start when Bony shot off target.
Ivory Coast international bony then cracked a venomous 25-yarder off the bar midway through the first half after Shelvey broke forward and find him. Tottenham, by contrast offered little, but then scored against the run of play.
Adebayor headed a Christian Eriksen back post centre home on 35 minutes, making it five goals in his last eight.

Manchester United ended their three-match losing streak in all competitions to beat Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday and put the brakes on their slump under David Moyes.
Second half goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck sank the Swans and prevented what would have been a fourth straight loss for the Reds for the first time in over 50 years.
After the game, Moyes roared that these are signs of improvement from his battered champions, who were dumped out of the Fa Cup 3rd round by Michael Laudrup’s side earlier this month.
In a round of fixtures that has thus far seen all of the top seven teams win their games, except for Arsenal, who play tonight, United simply had to win at the weekend to keep in touch.

Swansea made history by winning at Old Trafford thanks to Wayne Routledge’s early chip and a late Wilfried Bony header. Manchester United fell at the first Fa Cup hurdle despite Javier Hernandez scoring as substitute Fabio was sent off.
Defeat for the Red Devils – their fifth at home in all competitions this term – increases the pressure on David Moyes. United are still in the Capital One Cup, but look short of strength to defend their Premier League title and make a big splash in the Champions League.

Both he and Michael Laudrup have depleted squads for this encounter as United and the Swans are missing players from their attacks.

Manchester City went top of the Premier League table ahead of the rest of the New Year’s Day fixtures with a 3-2 away win at Swansea. Wilfried Bony scored twice, but strikes from Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov sealed victory for the visitors.
Both teams put together incisive moves early, but missed the target. First Edin Dzeko lashed across the face of goal for City and then Bony had Joe Hart scrambling at the other end as a 25-yarder flew wide.
Swansea lost winger Pablo Hernandez early to a hamstring problem. Roland Lamah, who scored in their draw at Aston Villa last time, came on. City then went ahead inside 15 minutes through Fernandinho.
The hosts could only clear a right wing corner to the Brazilian outside the box and his sweet strike flew through Jose Canas’s legs and beyond Gerhard Tremmel. Hart then saved low from Jonathan De Guzman.

Everton travel to Swansea knowing they have never lost this fixture home or away. The prize for another Toffees victory here is to go above Chelsea into fourth place in the Premier League until at least Monday.
Michael Laudrup’s Swans meanwhile could make history and climb back into the top half just in time for Christmas. The hosts have found juggling Europa League commitments with domestic games difficult in their third season in the top flight.
Swansea have recorded just two wins in all competitions since thumping Sunderland 4-0 in mid-October. Everton manager Roberto Martinez, who used to play for and coach the Swans, in contrast has seen his side only suffer one league defeat all season.

Tottenham are on the hunt for a new manager after the increasingly inevitable departure of Andre Villas-Boas was confirmed in the wake of the chastening 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool. The manager was summoned to an emergency meeting after the loss, and his departure by mutual consent was announced.
There are many possible options for Daniel Levy to turn to, and the Spurs chairman is under huge pressure to get this appointment right after the expensive failure of Avb. Michael Laudrup, Frank De Boer and Fabio Capello have been mentioned as potential successors, but one who could surprise a few onlookers is ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, who has been touted by BBC pundit Gary Lineker.
Hoddle has not managed at Premier League level since leaving Spurs themselves in 2003. His reign ended in disappointment, leaving Spurs in the relegation zone with four points from their six opening games.

Manchester City eased past Swansea City to continue their undefeated streak at home in the Premier League thanks to a Samir Nasri double.
Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring and the Sky Blues weathered a fightback from the visitors in the first half before ending the game as a contest in the second.
The win means City remain the only side in England’s top four divisions not to have lost at home this season, and now sit 3rd in the table, two points off Chelsea.
For Swansea, this is their second consecutive defeat, having gone down 1-0 at home to Valencia in the Europa League last Thursday, with Michael Laudrup’s men dropping into the bottom half down to 13th.
Nasri was the chief architect of Swansea’s misfortunes on Sunday evening, the Frenchman scoring twice from close range to add to Negredo’s brilliant freekick after just 8 minutes.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was quick to play down talk of a Manager of the Month award after four wins out of four in November, but he did nominate his high-flying side for ‘Team of the Month’.
The Magpies boss guided United to a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at St. James’ Park on Saturday – a victory that saw the Geordies move up to fifth in the Premier League table.
But rather than focussing on individual accolades, it was his squad that earned the 52-year-old’s – whose side won thanks to a wonder goal in the second-half from Frenchman Moussa Sissoko – praise. He said:
“We’ve got the team of the month, there’s no doubt about that.
“Our players have been outstanding, and I don’t know if they give out a trophy for team of the month, but that’s what we should be.

Newcastle United moved up to fifth in the Premier League table on Saturday thanks to a stunning strike from Moussa Sissoko against West Brom after the former Toulouse man struck a spectacular drive from distance in the 57th minute to hand Alan Pardew’s men their fourth win in a row.
Minutes earlier, Albion’s Chris Brunt had equalised after Yoan Gouffran’s fifth goal of the season, but Sissoko’s stunner was worthy of winning any match.
In a lively opening, the visitors tested Tim Krul in the Magpies’ goal as early as the third minute, with Brunt’s free-kick forcing a smart diving save from the Dutchman.
After Yohan Cabaye had dragged a shot wide on the quarter-hour mark, Baggies utility man Billy Jones came to his side’s rescue, clearing the ball from under the nose of Loic Remy inside the six-yard box.

Swansea could welcome winger Pablo Hernandez back into the side against former club Valencia on Thursday night.
The 28-year-old has not played more than half an hour of football since the beginning of September due to a thigh injury, but is back in contention.
Fellow winger Wayne Routledge is a doubt with a calf problem, while striker Michu (ankle) and defender Garry Monk (knee) are definitely out.
Valencia manager Miroslav Đukić has no injury concerns and has virtually a fully-fit squad to pick from.
Defender Adil Rami – sent off in the reverse fixture – is currently training with AC Milan ahead of his January move to the San Siro.

Former Swansea loan player Steven Caulker settled the South Wales derby in Cardiff City’s favour as the capital club pulled themselves four points clear of relegation danger.
Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay picked Craig Bellamy and faithful retainer Don Cowie in his XI as Korean player Kim and forward Fraizer Campbell dropped out. Otherwise this was the same team that started the goalless draw at Norwich.
Swans manager Michael Laudrup meanwhile had Jonjo Shelvey back in place of Alvaro Vazquez in the only alteration to his side from the home draw with West Ham.
Michu snatched at a shot when a Shelvey centre found him inside five minutes for the visitors and fired wide. Swansea took the game to their hosts in customary passing fashion. Michu worked David Marshall with Shelvey again the source of supply though this time in the centre.

Arsenal have been told by Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins to stump up £30 million if they want Michu, according to the Express.
Swans boss Michael Laudrup claimed the striker was worth at least that much only four months into his impressive debut season in the Premier League, a campaign that saw him net 18 goals.
And, following Michu’s recent call-up to the Spain squad, Jenkins agrees with that valuation of the 27-year-old.
He said:
“We’ve seen with Tottenham and Gareth Bale that every player has a price. We are not in that bracket with Tottenham but they sold a top player. We are realistic about that side of things.
“I would say Michael was about right with his valuation of Michu if you look at the current market, but this call-up enhances that further.
“We know we have a very talented player and naturally we want to keep him.”

This should be a game for the purists on Saturday evening with two teams who like to play progressive, possession football.
While I don’t subscribe to the view that this is the only way to play, there is after all more than one way to skin a cat.
Both sides have started the season well with Arsenal sitting at the top of the table and Swansea mid-table with seven points having already played Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool in their first five games. This combined with impressive away wins in the Champions League and Europa League respectively means both sides will enter the fray in positive mood.
Although they had a disappointing exit at the hands of Birmingham it should be put in perspective as Swansea made ten changes from the side that comprehensively beat Crystal Palace last Sunday.
It may not seem like it right...

Wayne Routledge netted a brace to help Swansea comfortably sweep aside Romanian team Petrolul Ploiesti, putting them in a strong position to reach the Europa League group stage for the first time.

With many of the top managers already in a job it means that Barcelona will have to go for a big name and face the compensation fee or go for someone who is relatively unknown to the footballing masses.
The new man faces the tough challenge of managing arguably the best club team football has ever seen and all the scrutiny that comes with that. But also with the challenge of changing the view that the major power in European football has shifted to Germany and Bayern Munich.
Here are Six potential contenders to succeed Tito Vilanova.

Swansea City have completed the £12 million purchase of Vitesse Arnhem steiker Wilfried Bony, according to the BBC.
The Ivorian international has put pen to paper on a four-year contract, tying him to the Welsh club until 2017.
Bony finished last season as the top goalscorer in the Netherlands, scoring 31 goals in 30 Eredivisie appearances for Vitesse.
West Ham also put in an offer for the 24-year-old, but Swansea won the race for his signature with a higher bid.
Bony said:
“I’ve wanted to play in the Premier League for a long time.”
The forward has become manager Michael Laudrup’s seventh permanent summer signing, following the acquisitions of Jonjo Shelvey from Liverpool, Alejandro Pozuelo and Jose Canas from Real Betis, Jordi Amat from Espanyol, Gregor Zabret from Nk Domzale and Alex Gogic from Olympiakos.
Midfielder Jonathan de Guzman has also agreed to a second, season-long loan from Spanish outfit Villarreal.

Swansea City are expected to complete the signing of Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony today, according to the BBC.
The deal could eventually cost Michael Laudrup’s side £13 million when taking into account bonuses and other add-ons, as the Swans look to complete their seventh summer signing.
West Ham were also interested in the impressive Ivorian, who finished last season as the Netherland’s top goalscorer with 31 goals in 30 Eredivisie appearances, but Swansea have won the race and Bony will join fellow new recruits Jonjo Shelvey, Alejandro Pozuelo, Jose Canas, Jordi Amat, Gregor Zabret and Alex Gogic at the Liberty Stadium.
Midfielder Jonathan de Guzman has also rejoined the Welsh outfit for a second, season-long loan from Villarreal.
The heavy investment in the squad is a show of support by club bosses for manager Laudrup, who has said in the past that new acquisitions would have to be brought in...

Swansea City’s rise from the lower reaches of English football to the Premier League is a heroic story – so much so, it’s being turned into a film.
In 2001, the club were sold for £1 to businessman Tony Petty, and his three-month spell almost sent the club into extinction. In 2002, reportedly 24 hours before the club were about to go to the wall, supporters ousted Petty and bought back the club, but there were more troubling times to come.
A year later, only a 4-2 win against Hull City on the last day of the 2002/03 season saved the Swans from relegation out of the Football League.
Eight years and two promotions later, Swansea are cutting it in the big time of the Premier League, after becoming the first ever Welsh club to be promoted to the topflight in 2011, and with it picking up a £90 million jackpot.
What a long way they’ve come.

Swansea City have agreed a deal for Vitesse Arnhem striker Wilfried Bony, according to the player’s agent and Team Talk.
The 24-year old has been linked with a string of Premier League teams including Newcastle, Sunderland and Arsenal but Swans manager Michael Laudrup has moved a step closer towards landing the in-demand Ivorian, who has just enjoyed a remarkable season in Holland.
Laudrup has made buying a new forward one of his top priorities this summer as he looks to ease some of the goal-scoring burden on Michu, who was the club’s leading goalscorer last season.
Bony’s agent, Francis Kacou, has claimed his client is on the verge of a move to the Liberty Stadium, with only minor details to be finalised.
“Bony will go to Swansea,” Kacou told Dutch newspaper de Gelderlander.
“For how many years? We still have to work out that part. Hopefully more will be clear today.

Earlier this week, former Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear was appointed director of football at the club, a decision taken by unpopular owner Mike Ashley that created an instant storm at St James’ Park.
It was an appointment not helped by the fact Kinnear had earlier given a shambolic interview to talkSPORT in which he mispronounced the names of players and staff and also insulted the club’s fans, nor was the controversy lessened in any way by news that the 66-year old former Wimbledon manager would be Alan Pardew’s superior.
And the bad news just kept on coming for Newcastle fans as Kinnear later scrapped the Magpie’s long-standing pursuit of free agent Douglas, a player who was highly rated by Pardew and was on the verge of signing.
News that Kinnear would have almost total control over the club’s transfer business led to the resignation of...

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup is unlikely to make too many changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Chelsea last weekend.
Neil Taylor made an appearance from the bench in that game to complete his comeback from a lengthy spell on the sidelines and he could start in place of Ben Davies.
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is however expected to ring the changes for Saturday’s visit to Wales. Matija Nastasic is expected to replace Joleon Lescott while James Milner and Javi Garcia are both pushing for starts.
Sergio Aguero is expected to keep his place in spite of the upcoming Fa Cup Final with Wigan Athletic.
Key Stats
Swansea City have failed to win any of their last six league matches, losing four and drawing two.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup has a fully fit squad to select from as he prepares to welcome Southampton to the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
Leon Britton returns having missed the draw with Norwich to attend the birth of his twin sons, while defender Neil Taylor could make his return from the broken and dislocated ankle he suffered back in September.
Southampton could be without duo Kelvin Davis and Guly do Prado due to injury and illness respectively.
Jose Fonte however is expected to be available after the birth of his son.
Key Stats
This is only the fourth time these two sides have met in the last three decades.
The two sides drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture, and before that, the last time they met was in the 2008/09 Championship. Then, Swansea claimed a win and a draw over their rivals.

So Paolo Di Canio has been appointed the new Sunderland manager, and some people don’t seem to understand why this is a totally terrible thing. Paolo Di Canio is a fascist. He believes in an ideology that propped up Hitler during World War II, and that millions of our ancestors died fighting against. He believes in an ideology that promotes violence over peace, racism over equality, division over unity. It is an ideology that has spectacularly failed every time it has been tried. Such views are not appropriate to be given such a public forum. For those who genuinely didn’t quite understand the fuss, this should hopefully be sufficient enough to persuade them that Di Canio + Sunderland = boooooooooooooooooooooo. But, alarmingly, for some it doesn’t seem to be.
There seem to be three standard arguments in favour of Di Canio being allowed to take charge at Sunderland. The first is “Hooray For Fascism!

Arsenal are set to battle it out with Liverpool for Swansea City defender Ashley Williams, according to the Daily Mail.
The centre-back has had an impressive season for Michael Laudrup’s League Cup-winning side, and his performances have reportedly alerted Arsene Wenger and his chief scout Steve Rowley.
Arsenal have been steadily bolstering their defensive ranks, starting with the purchase of Malaga left-back Nacho Monreal on transfer deadline day.
Now they are set to add another defender to their squad by following up their interest with a concrete bid in the summer, according to the same report.
Sources close to the Swansea captain suggest that the player would find it hard to resist the urge to move to a more high profile club in the summer, despite the fact his current club are guaranteed a place in Europe through their League Cup win whilst Arsenal are currently battling for fifth place.

There is often a preconception that a great player will make a great manager because of the knowledge he has built up during his time as a player, and there are some cases where a great player does turn into a great or successful manager such as Kenny Dalglish, Pep Guardiola, Frank de Boer and Michael Laudrup, but often the best managers tend to be those who had limited success as a player. Arguably the two best managers in the world – Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho – did very little in their playing careers but are seen as the definition of success.
Great players often get better managerial jobs earlier than their lesser renowned counterparts because of their name recognition and influence within the game, but for high profile players it can often be best to start at a smaller club with less exposure and pressure.
