As Nickelodeon turns 40, Variety breaks down some of the network’s most important titles to date.
“All That”
“All That” launched careers in its 1994-2005 run, and is being resurrected with a new cast and many of the same producers this summer. “It just seemed like a quirky, different hang out for kids,” says original cast member Kenan Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) who is coming back as an executive producer on the reboot.

“Blue’s Clues & You!,” premiering in November, reinvents the 1996-2007 hit for another generation. With four decades of transformative kids’ programming from such series as “All That” to “Blue’s Clues” to “Rugrats” under its belt, Nickelodeon has been responsible for inspiring new generations of Hollywood creatives.
For comic actor Kenan Thompson, it’s easy to see how Nickelodeon’s “All That” became a training ground for his work on NBC’s late-night, much more adult sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.”
“All That,” Thompson says, taught him “how to play to a four-camera setup and all that good stuff — going in and out of costumes and wigs, being patient putting makeup on and rehearsing all day.”
Meanwhile, “The Big Bang Theory” showrunner Steve Holland remembers being a fan of Nick’s “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” and “Ren & Stimpy” before getting his first job in TV as an intern at Nick’s former studio in Orlando, Fla. He also landed his first...

From the ages of eight to 18, children spend more than seven hours a day looking at screens. Studies indicate kids now have access to an average of 12 screens per household. And the multi-billion dollar children’s programming industry has followed the evolution of preschool programming from a few staples like “Sesame Street” and “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” to a frenzy of Paw Patrols, Peppa Pigs and Dora the Explorers — with lunchboxes, action figures and myriad other merchandise to match.
Creating relevant and educational content against that level of competition and the evolving consumption habits of frazzled parents and their kiddos is no small task, especially in the preschool space. But Angela Santomero, 9 Story’s newly minted chief creative officer, may have cracked the code through a cocktail of research, interaction and education.
Santomero has an impressive resume as the creator of several established series over the span of her 25-year career.

In the past decade broadcast networks mostly retreated to near the bare minimum of children’s programming that the Federal Communications Commission would allow. But in the past few months an influx of orders for kid-friendly content, specifically by streaming services, has made a seemingly cold genre suddenly hot.
In January, Hulu announced a revival of the popular “Animaniacs” for 2020 with a two-season, straight-to-series order. Amazon has been rolling out original children’s content for several years, most recently with the premiere of “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” a family series executive produced by Bryan Cranston. All the services mix original and acquired series. For Netflix that’s included such originals as “Julie’s Greenroom” and “Beat Bugs” mixed with acquisitions including “My Little Pony” and “The Cat in the Hat.”

As with previous pilot seasons, viewers in the Us, UK and Germany will be invited to watch, rate and review them all over the course of four weeks, ultimately helping to decide which of them get picked up to full series.
The new pilots come from both highly-acclaimed and newly-discovered creators, and a legion of talented actors, directors and producers signed on to bring the pilots to life. Here’s a brief summary of each:

Vincent Van Gogh and Georges Seurat may not be part of your kids’ kindergarten curriculum, but Amazon is betting they will be central characters of the next “Blue's Clues.” “Creative Galaxy,” one of Amazon's first kids’ shows, debuts on the e-commerce giant's instant video service Thursday. Amazon is trying to strike a delicate balance between education and entertainment with its kids’ programming, a combination Angela Santomero knows well. She co-created “Blue's Clues,” the Nickelodeon show about a man and his dog who solve puzzles. “Creative Galaxy” encourages kids to make art — and learn its history in the process. It stars.

While Amazon may be in the business of polling users regarding their pilots, they're not about to leave things to chance when it comes to the nation's youth. Looking to rival Netflix in every way, Amazon announced start dates for its first three original children's programs today, one of which comes from the "Blue's Clues" creator Angela Santomero. "Amazon Studios is thrilled to bring its first original children's series to kids and their families this summer," said Tara Sorensen, Head of Kids Programming at Amazon Studios. "We're working with some of the most renowned creators in the business to introduce programming that promotes lifelong learning through play. The kids programming team and series creators have had so much fun developing these new series." Amazon employed Dr. Alice Wilder, an educational psychologist and Amazon Studios' Educational Advisor, who helped pioneer a new kind of interaction between a youth audience and the shows they watch.

Amazon is serving kids a side of education with their daily dose of TV shows. The Seattle-based tech giant launched its first slate of children's series Thursday with shows from Emmy winner Drew Hodges, “Blue's Clues” co-creator Angela Santomero and Emmy nominee Jj Johnson. Hodges’ “Tumble Leaf” and Santomero's “Creative Galaxy” are intended for pre-school aged children while the third, Johnson's “Annedroids,” is intended for kids between the age of four and seven. Each of those shows fits into a broader curriculum, a term Amazon executives use frequently that underscores their focus on educating and entertaining at the same time.

Written by Angela Santomero, creator of Blue’s Clues, Creative Galaxy, and the Emmy-nominated literacy series, Super Why!, Wishenpoof! is an animated pilot that revolves around Bianca, who has “wish magic” which means if she wishes to play under the sea then— Wishenpoof! — she’s a mermaid, swimming around with the sea horses. Bianca uses her wish magic to help others and learns to solve life’s problems in her own creative way because with magic, or without, we all have the power to make good choices. It didn’t take long for Amazon to show that it’s really getting behind its original programming theory. It doesn’t seem that long since we were running through the pilots and filling out polls, but Amazon is already saying it wants to see more, and continue on this road.
Five more shows aimed at children will produce pilots in the hopes of getting a series green light, and like the last set of children’s programming, these look like they’ll be great shows. From massively prestigious pedigrees in the business to someone Amazon found through their open submission process, there’s a lot to look forward to here. Amazon Studios kids shows were the best part of the initial run of pilots for me, and I think they may be aiming to make a real push into the market with these additional titles.

From outer space to “normal street,” five new series optioned by Amazon Studios will take children on journeys of wonder, laughter, and creative exploration.
Amazon Studios today announced that it will be producing five pilots for Prime Instant Video, including its first for 6- to 11-year-olds. The children’s series were created by established writers such as Duane Capizzi (Transformers Prime), as well as a newcomer discovered via Amazon Studios’ open-door development process.
The pilots will stream on Amazon Instant Video and LOVEFiLM in the U.K. for customers to watch, provide feedback, and help determine which shows should be produced as series.
“We’re very excited to be able to introduce these original ideas and their talented creators to Amazon customers. After the success of our first pilots, we look forward to getting lots more fantastic feedback from kids and parents,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “For...

The experiment Amazon Studios used to decide which of its pilots to give series orders to – which consisted of making all 14 pilots available on Prime Instant Video on April 19 for viewers to watch and give feedback on – seems to have been a success as five of those pilots were picked up. Sometime this year, and early 2014, five original series will air on Prime Instant: comedies Alpha House and Betas, and children shows Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf. The choosing of these pilots was made in part on feedback from viewers, which would mean, in theory, these were the best Amazon had to offer.
But the experiment isn’t over. Deadline reported Amazon would continue to use this method in the future; feeling as though allowing the audience to have an impact on what shows would be picked up was a huge success. In a way, it’s genius. You’re...

So far, Amazon Studios' radical approach to production has made more progress in the television realm than in movies. And so the company has greenlit five original TV series to be available exclusively on Prime Instant Video later this year and in early 2014. Deemed most popular by Amazon and LOVEFiLM customers, going into series production are comedy pilots "Alpha House," Garry Trudeau's political story starring John Goodman about four senators-turned-unlikely-roommates, and "Betas," executive producer Michael London's series about four young entrepreneurs attempting to make it big in techland, and kids pilots "Annebots," about a kid scientist and her robots, "Creative Galaxy," Angela C. Santomero, portrait of alien artist, and animated "Tumbleaf," about a whimsical fox searching for adventure. “We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “We built Amazon Studios so that customers could help...

AmazonStudios is taking a more unusual approach by letting viewers decide what they want to keep watching. The company has kicked off its screening process this weekend by unveiling its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows, all made available for free on AmazonInstant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and Amazon is welcoming feedback from its audience. According to Deadline, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups to decide if they greenlight a series or not. The highest-profile series is Zombieland, but the two that look most interesting are Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; and Onion News Empire. Amazon has not yet decided how many of the shows will make the cut, nor when they will premiere.

Amazon Studios, the original movie and series production arm of Amazon.com, has ordered another test pilot for an original children’s series, Sara Solves It. Co-developed by Wgbh and Out of the Blue Enterprises, the animated show was created by Emmy Award winner Carol Greenwald (Curious George) and Angela C. Santomero (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood), who serve as executive producers. It follows brother and sister duo Sara and Sam as they take on mysteries that spring from the questions young children encounter in their daily lives. Each mystery is an interactive, math-based puzzle that the home viewer can solve along with the characters. Sara Solves It joins the five children’s pilots Amazon Studios greenlighted in January. The company also has eight comedy pilots in various stages of production. Once completed, the pilots will be posted on Prime Instant Video and Amazon Instant Video for customers to watch for free.

For Mrs. Rogers to sign off on a new show, it must promote her late husband's values. And the youngest of viewers, in this case 2- to-4-year-olds, must be entertained.
The new PBS show "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" debuts Monday, Sept. 3 (check local listings). It's a sweet, not treacly animated show featuring two related 11-minute episodes and a live-action short film. Each weekday episode gently delivers moral lessons. Voodoo Highway supplies songs with the necessary catchiness.
It's a fair bet that the parents of the target audience grew up on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," and they will recognize the characters' heritage.
Daniel Tiger is the son of the original show's Daniel Striped Tiger. His best friend is O the Owl, who lives with his Uncle X in a tree. He's also pals with Katerina Kittycat, daughter of the original show's Henrietta Pussycat, and with Prince Wednesday, the youngest member of the neighborhood's royal family.

You've got a bit of a wait in store, but PBS announced yesterday that a new show is coming your way inspired by Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood will hit in Fall 2012, with a focus on preparing kids for school success. There obviously isn't a whole lot of info on the show, but it already sounds very cool. It's the next generation in the neighborhood of make-believe, and the titular Daniel Tiger is the son of the one you met with Mr. Rogers.
I certainly have high hopes, and if recent PBS Kids launches are any indication, this one should live up to the unavoidable expectations of anything bearing the Mister Rogers name. Check out the full release below.
