Though she may have a limited number of films to her credit (only putting things out about every three years), Sofia Coppola is on the very short list of my favorite working directors. Not only is she responsible for one of my favorite films, but I even loved Somewhere, which threw people for a loop, and certainly didn’t resonate with audiences generally. Coming off the heels of that film and Marie Antoinette, which overall performed as bad with audiences and worse among critics, Coppola needs a boost to her status in the collective consciousness.
If a massive surge of hype surrounding a teaser counts for anything, she is apparently well on her way to getting that boost. Of course, the movie is going to have to actually do well, but this looks to have all the elements needed to at least outperform her last two efforts at the box office.

#13. Casa de mi Padre - Matt Piedmont In my books, among best films to have been shown at last year's edition was Matt Piedmont's award winning Brick Novax's Diary (parts I & II). Casa de mi Padre - Piedmont's feature film debut as been a lock for a while now (see trailer), my thinking is this knee-slapper with subtitles is looking for the most ideal fest to tickle audiences and get a distributor to budge and pick up this oddball concept of a film that will play better as an indie film than a studio pic. Alumni Park City members Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal star alongside the Funny or Die folk. Look for a Premieres category showing. Update: The pic just got picked up by Pantelion Films with a March 16th set release date. We smell a possible SXSW entry as an alternative fest showing date. Gist: Scripted by Andrew Steele,...

We already had a little chat about the upcoming Matt Piedmont’s Spanish comedy Casa de mi Padre or if you prefer “House of my father.”
So, by now, you know that Will Ferrell is attached to star in it, and to produce the whole thing.
Today, we’re here for a little casting update, because Diego Luna (that we all remember from Milk) and Gael Garcia Bernal (best known from Blindness) are joining the project as well!
At this moment, not much is known about the project, because the plot is being kept under wraps.
Still, according to some reports, the film will adopt the style of dramatic Mexican ‘telenovela’ soap, and will have English subtitles.
Diego Luna will play Ferrell’s brother, while Gael Garcia Bernal plays “a family friend.” Also in the cast are Genesis Rodriguez as Ferrell’s love interest, Pedro Armendariz Jr., Hector Jimenez and Adrian Martinez.

Matt Piedmont, best known for his directorial work with Funny or Die, is helming Casa de mi padre, a Spanish language comedy starring Will Ferrell.
While it’s a surprise to see Piedmont and Ferrell take on comedy in a foreign tongue, Piedmont is securing the film’s success by adding as many talented and notable Hispanic actors as possible. Most recently The Hollywood Reporter announced Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who co-starred in Y tu mamá también and Rudo y Cursi, have joined the ranks which includes: Genesis Rodriguez (Entourage), Pedro Armendariz Jr. (Casa de los babys), Hector Jimenez (Gentleman Bronchos), and Adrian Martinez (It’s Kind of a Funny Story).
It’s a smart cast lineup as American audiences are likely to follow Ferrell, while Bernal and Luna both hold international appeal. Add the sultriness Rodriquez with the comedy prowess of Jimenez and Martinez and the film...

Here's a glimpse at some interesting, unusual and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles (with a bit of editorial commentary added to the mix).
The Deep Blue Sea-- Rachel Weisz is reportedly in talks to work with British auteur Terence Davies in his feature adaptation of Terence Rattigan's pre-Mad Men-era play about a suicidal woman who leaves her established husband for a drunk, ex-fighter pilot. Set up with funding from the recently-axed UK Film Council, this one may need a lot more signatures if it's ever going to take flight.
Old St. Louis-- As the buzz begins to build for his boxing biopic The Fighter, writer-director David O. Russell is already prepping his next bout. With Vince Vaughn and Universal Pictures in his corner, the team is developing this comedy-drama about a traveling salesman (Vaughn) who hits the road in search of his estranged daughter. They're eyeing Hit-Girl, Chloe Moretz, to play his kid and Scarlett Johansson for the role of his flirty secretary.
Casa de mi padre-- Will Ferrell in a Spanish language film? Es de verdad? His production company, Gary Sanchez Prods., says, Si. A co-production with Emilio Diez Barroso and Darlene Caamano Loquet's Nala Films, the film is supposed to begin filming in September.
Sausage Party-- From Superbad braintrusts Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jonah Hill, this is a super-secret CGI project that's so super secret we don't know what it's about (and sorta wonder if it's even for real). Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne will helm.
Imogene-- Funny girl Kristin Wiig stars in this comedy written by Michelle Morgan. No plot details yet, but it's grabbed the attention of American Splendor's Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who're considering it as their follow-up to their current festival fave The Extra Man and HBO's Cinema Verite.

We recently reported that Will Ferrell joined the cast of Nala Films' "Casa De Mi Padre (House of My Father)," which is a Spanish-language movie. But now, we get a bit more information. I'm just not sure if this information is a joke or not. Nala Films announced today that the movie will be produced by Ferrell's production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, which means that director Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Anchorman) is also on board to produce. Nala is fully financing the picture, which is set to start shooting this September in California. So how did Ferrell become part of the production? - If there is a subgenre that I don't care to see Julianne Moore's acting chops its in the supernatural/thriller kind....more specifically, paycheck films such as The Forgotten, Freedomland and last year's Next. Variety reports that the actress will play the title role in the same genre fair - an American film debut from the duo behind Swedish film Storm. The 22-25 million dollar project scripted by Michael Cooney ("Identity") is being produced by Nalafilms. Shelter follows a female forensic psychiatrist who specializes in debunking multiple personality disorder. When she discovers that her latest patient's various personalities are all murder victims, she struggles to find a logical explanation for the man's delusion. I believe Nala picked up the project from turnaround - Intermedia had the rights to the project back in 04'. Mans Marlind (an American Film Institute grad) and Bjorn Stein will begin filming in late March in Pittsburgh.

This review was written for the theatrical release of "Dan in Real Life".Peter Hedges has snuck up on us. He is no newcomer to film comedy. At age 45, he has written the novel and screenplay for the offbeat, felicitous "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," penned the screenplay for the sharply observed comic drama "About a Boy", wrote and directed the wonderfully dysfunctional Thanksgiving comedy "Pieces of April" and now has co-written and directed "Dan in Real Life".
This latter film, among many other fine things, provides Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche with comic roles that fit them like designer threads. While not a perfect comedy, "Dan" is certainly a crowd-pleasing, cleverly engineered and well-executed divertissement that should put grins on the faces of movie fans of many ages and execs at Disney and Focus Features.
Hedges' focus, at least up to this point, is the family. He also likes to deploy multiple stories that give you a big, chaotic mess within which smaller, intimate moments of tenderness or romance can exist. Here he brings together a large, boisterous family for an annual fall weekend in Rhode Island.
Dan (Carell) writes a family-advice column, Dan in Real Life. He is a widowed father of three girls, two of which are teens, meaning Dad is the last person you would go to for advice.
So he brings to this gathering mostly cranky daughters: Jane (Alison Pill), who wants to use her new driver's license and to be treated like an adult; Cara (Brittany Robertson), who believes she is the first person in the world to discover love; and 8-year-old Lilly (Marlene Lawston), who is smarter than Dan can possibly realize.
Longtime playboy brother Mitch (stand-up comic Dane Cook) means to introduce his family to his new squeeze, but before he can do So Dan unwittingly makes her acquaintance in a bookstore. He falls head over heels for Marie (Binoche) without realizing that she is his brother's new girlfriend. The sequence plays a little too meet cute but nonetheless features charming acting by Carell and Binoche. This predicament sets up any number of comically awkward situations in a huge, multibedroom seaside house belonging to Mom and Dad (veterans John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest, who cagily play things straight).
What Hedges does here so brilliantly is allow us to see two people fall madly in love in a situation where no one else can be aware of their passion. Eye contact and tugs at the mouth from Carell and Binoche do the trick very nicely, while the animated clan provides an engaging backdrop of familial love, thwarted though intense feelings -- that would be Cara -- longings for recognition -- that would be Jane -- and wounded behavior by the entire group once they realize Dan's deception. There also is a priceless drop-by appearance by beauteous Emily Blunt, who is becoming the queen of comic supporting roles.
The third act is a disappointment. It feels labored and unconvincing in its attempt to wrap up a convoluted situation that the Greeks would have handled with a god descending from the heavens to sort it all out.
No matter. Getting there was all the fun.

This review was written for the theatrical release of "In the Valley of Elah".Paul Haggis has not only avoided the dreaded sophomore slump, but the director and co-writer of the Oscar-winning "Crash" has returned with another bona-fide contender.
Ostensibly a murder-mystery set against the backdrop of the war in Iraq, "In the Valley of Elah" is a deeply reflective, quietly powerful work that is as timely as it is moving.
Further graced by an exceptional Tommy Lee Jones lead performance that would have to be considered one of the finest in the 60-year-old actor's career, the Warner Independent release is getting a little preliminary festival exposure at Venice and Toronto before opening in limited engagements on Sept. 14.
Strong word-of-mouth should ensure that the film plays well into awards season.
For those not up on their Old Testament, "In the Valley of Elah" refers to the place where David slew Goliath. It's an apt metaphor for the battle undertaken by Jones, as a grieving father fighting his way through a bureaucratic quagmire in search of the truth, and by the young men and women who are facing insurmountable odds of emerging physically and/or emotionally unscathed from an increasingly controversial conflict.
Jones' Hank Deerfield is a former military MP who receives a call that his son, Mike Jonathan Tucker, in flashbacks) has gone AWOL after returning from active duty in Iraq. When the elder Deerfield shows up in Albuquerque, N.M., to conduct his own personal investigation, it's subsequently discovered that his son has been a victim of foul play.
In his efforts to find out what really happened, Hank initially butts heads with Emily Sanders (a no-nonsense Charlize Theron), a recently promoted police detective who is fighting a couple of battles of her own -- against the close-knit military brass, and for respect from her colleagues, who make unsubtle intimations about her relationship with her boss (Josh Brolin).
As Hank stubbornly soldiers on, Emily eventually lends her support. As the two begin to piece together the events that led up to Mike's disappearance, Hank is also forced to take stock of his own belief system.
In part an adaptation of a Playboy magazine article by Mark Boal called "Death and Dishonor", the Haggis version is an eloquently written portrait of a man clinging to logic during a time of confusion and turmoil.
With equal amounts bravado, anguish and, ultimately, remorse filling the crevices of his world-weary visage, Jones never has been better; Theron also effectively portrays the multifaceted dimensions of a single mother and small-town detective whose tough exterior conceals a considerable amount of vulnerable self-doubt.
Making the most of the few scenes she has, Susan Sarandon is affecting as Jones' dutiful wife, while Frances Fisher does likewise as a topless bartender who provides Jones with some valuable leads.
Production values are equally accomplished, from cinematographer Roger Deakins' stirring visual compositions to production designer Laurence Bennett's tarnished Americana to Mark Isham's achingly poignant, string-laden score.

- Quick Links > Mr. Burnout > Paul Dinello > Strangers with Candy Paul Dinello (Strangers With Candy) has signed on to direct Mr. Burnout from a screenplay by Eric Gravning. Nala Films’ Emilio Diez Barroso and Darlene Caamano Loquet will produce. Mr. Burnout is the story of an English teacher who turns into a cynical curmudgeon after ten years of teaching. He takes a bet, wagered by a female colleague that he’ll try to romance, that he can get three of his worst students into the Ivy League. Shooting is scheduled to kick off in January 2007. This will be Dinello’s first film since he hit Sundance in 2005 with the feature-length addition of the Comedy Central semi-hit “Strangers With Candy,” which he created alongside current Comedy Central star and the neo-Steve Carell, Steven Colbert. Dinello also serves as “consultant” on The Colbert Report, and appears frequently in the role of Tad.
