Argentina has selected Luis Ortega’s well-received Cannes Film Festival crime drama The Angel (El Angel) as its contender for the Foreign Language Oscar. The film, produced by Pedro Almodóvar, broke box office records in its home country; The Orchard acquired U.S. rights after its Un Certain Regard bow and has set a November 9 theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles for the film before rolling it out nationally.
The pic from Ortega, who directed and co-wrote with Sergio Olguin and Rodolfo Palacios, is a portrait based on Argentina’s real-life serial killer dubbed “The Angel of Death.” The pic picks up the story when Carlitos (Lorenzo Ferro), a 17-year-old with movie star swagger, blond curls and a baby face in 1970s Buenos Aires, meets Ramon (Chino Darín) who embark on a journey of discovery, love and murder. When he is finally caught, the press dubs Carlitos “The...

No surprise here, but Mexico just selected Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma from Netflix as its official submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.
After its launch in the fall festival space, Roma has been on fire, collecting the Golden Lion at Venice. Cuarón’s memoir to his homeland reportedly also played in a cinema down in Mexico City during August to qualify. Netflix is working to give Roma a theatrical release in Dolby Atmos, the format the director prefers. Deadline heard that qualifying theatrical run will start December 14 in select cities.
Much like how Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon received love throughout all Oscar categories outside of foreign language, it would come as no surprise to see the same here for Roma.
Cuarón produced, wrote, directed and shot the black-and-white pic about his memories growing up in Mexico City. In 2014, he became the first Mexico-born filmmaker...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Directed by: Dejan Zecevic Writers: Barry Keating, Milan Konjevic. Cast: Ken Foree, Katarina Cas, Monte Markham and Dragan Micanovic. With the Eastern Bloc defunct, more and more films are coming out of Eastern Europe nowadays. The Rift bills itself as Serbia's first science fiction film. But, the film sets itself amongst a number of genres. It is essentially a mystery. There are strong elements of action here, as well. When the dead come back to life, there will be gunfire, especially with longtime horror vet' Ken Foree (Dawn of the Dead, 1978) starring. The soundtrack is a bit overwhelming; it bounces between instrumentals, rock music and a few other styles. Meanwhile, the film's story covers existentialist themes. This viewer wondered if the film was trying to answer the question: what if Jesus wore a spacesuit? Overall,...

The Enemy Trailer has premiered. Dejan Zecevic‘s The Enemy / Neprijatelj (2011) stars Aleksandar Stojkovic, Vuk Kostic, Tihomir Stanic, Ljubomir Bandovic, and Marija Pikic. The Enemy‘s plot synopsis: “The year is 1995. A small engineering squad has welcomed Dayton Agreement in mountains, not far from the ruins of a local factory that was destroyed in combat. In that strange atmosphere, the squad finds a walled-in basement in ruins of the factory – and in it a man, which quietly sits behind a desk, next to an ashtray filled with cigarette buds, as if he was actually waiting for them. Pandora’s Box is opening…” This film certainly seems to have some tricks up its sleeve if this movie trailer is any indication. The parts where one of the characters says whom he believes the walled-in-man to be and that “he created this world” are two of my favorite moments. The film looks well-shot as well.

One of the cooler and sicker things to check in addition to the premiere of A Serbian Film at the Fantasia Film Festival 2010 is their Subversive Serbia Film Spotlight and we have got some stills from three of the films that will be weirding up the big screen!
A Holy Place Fantasia Description
"This is the version of Nikolai Gogol's short story “Viy” that foreign audiences have barely ever seen—most have probably never heard of it. Unlike the rather benign Russian fantasy Viy (1967), the Serbian version is definitively for adults, in terms of both erotic and horrific content. The story is still about a reluctant theology student forced to spend three nights in a row locked in a spooky church, reading the Psalms over the (un)dead girl. All the while, supernatural forces are trying to grab him from the holy circle drawn on the floor. Gogol's half-humorous...

The Fantasia 2010 announcement onslaught continues ...
Montreal, June 29, 2010. Serbia's terrifying recent history has birthed a confrontational new generation of filmmakers who are using the medium to express their wounded psyches in ways the Western World can barely get its head around. Our spotlight, which we are calling Subversive Serbia showcases the key entries in this intelligently transgressive and politically-charged filmmaking scene. We're also going to showcase a string of retro Serbian genre films never before screened here, programmed in association with Dejan Ognjanovic and the Belgrade Cinematheque.
Beyond the screenings, Mr. Ognjanovic will be presenting a multimedia presentation and panel discussion - An Introduction To Serbian Horror Cinema - where he will be joined by the makers of many of the films showcased in our spotlight.
Your eyes are about to be opened. Wide.
